Several weeks later, my son's teacher asked me to meet him at his office. In the teacher's office, an exchange of greetings was followed by his questions:“Is your son mentally retarded(弱智的)? Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?”Was he talking about my wonderful Scola? No, no, it can't be. What a helpless, lonely moment! I told him that Scola was a quiet, sweet little boy, instead. I asked him why he was asking me all these questions. My son could not follow the teacher's directions, he told me, and thus, Scola was disrupting the class. Didn't he know my son did not speak English yet?He was angry:“Why hasn't your son been taught to speak English? Don't you speak English at home?”“No, I don't speak English at home,” I replied, “I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months, and I didn't want him to forget his native language.” “Well, wrong answer! What kind of person would not speak in English to her son at home and at all times? Are you one of those people who come to this country to save dollars and send them back to their country, never wanting to be a part of this society?”Needless to say, I tried to tell him I was not one of “those people”. Then he told me the meeting was over, and I left.As I had expected, my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over. He went on to graduate from college and got a job, earning close to six figures. He travels widely and leads a welladjusted, contented life. And he has benefited from being bilingual(双语的)Speaking more than one language allows people to communicate with others; it teaches people about other cultures and other placessomething very basic and obviously lacking in the “educator” I met in New Jersey.16The teacher asked the author to his office _Ato discuss Scola's inclass performanceBto get Scola enrolled in kindergartenCto find a language partner for ScolaDto work out a study plan for Scola17What does the underlined word “disrupting” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?ABreaking. BFollowing.CAttending. DDisturbing.18The author's attitude towards being bilingual may best be described as _Acritical BcasualCpositive Dpassive19This text is likely to be selected from a book of_Amedicine BeducationCgeography DhistoryBTwo recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behaviour. One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study. They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner's Dilemma. The game is based on the tension between the interests of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players, at a cost to the punisher. Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behaviour proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded it the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings. The group with the most punishment earned twentyfive per cent less than the group with the least punishment. The study appeared last month in the journal Science. The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children were aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children were aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not. The study says the IQs of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points. The more they are spanked, the slower their mental development is. 20According to the first study, we mainly infer that_. Athe game is called Prisoner's DilemmaBthe less a group punished itself, the lower its earningsCadults are much more cooperative if rewardedDthe game is introduced in the journal Science21Which of the following is TRUE according to the second study?AChildren's IQs have much to do with physical punishment. BThe study is about violence and abuse of children. CThe children tested were divided into groups of four.DChildren's mental development only relies on their IQs. 22What does the underlined word “spanked” refer to?APunished. BBlamed.CTested. DPraised.23What might be the best title for the text?AThe best way to correct misbehaviourBPunishment is the best way of educationCCooperation is the most successful behaviourDPunishment or reward: Which works better on behaviour? 课时作业(四).1.D2.C3B考查动词词义辨析。句意:我们不得不做出决定的时刻快要到来了。approach 接近,靠近;go消失,不见了;go by 和pass都表示“时间消逝/过去”。4C5.C6B考查动词短语辨析。7A8.B9.D10.C11.C12.D13.D14.B15D.A16A17.D18.C19.BB20C21.A22.A23.D
