include a paragraph of discussion on the influence of supportinteractionsattheendofSec.IIIsincewefeelthatitisindeedanimportantissuetobeconsidered.Wesuggestthatsupportinteractionsmayaffectthebasal-planecatalyticactivitybecauseofthepossibleelectrontransferbetweenasupportandthecatalystonit.Foradonor-typesupport,suchasAu(111),electronstransferfromthesupporttothecatalyst,diminishingtheelectronaffinityofthecatalystand weakening the hydrogen binding.Different from the case of MoS2-edgecatalysis(Ref.51),where edge reconstruction can be induced,supportinteractionsarenotexpectedtochangetheatomicconfigurationonthebasalplanes,as observed by many experiments.Accordingly,the adiabatic protonaffinitywillnotchangetoomuch.Themajorinfluenceofsupportinteractionsonthebasal-planecatalyticactivityisthereforebychangingtheadiabaticelectronaffinityofthecatalyst,whichissimilartothecasewithoutsupportsandcanalsobedescribedbytheproposedcomputationalmodel.Inthissense,existenceofasupportwillnotaffecttheuseofthemethodtodrawthesameconclusions,andalsocannotchangethefactthattheHERactivityisrelativelybetterfor1H-NbS2,1T-MoS2and1T-NbS2thanfor1H-MoS2,asisconfirmedexperimentally(Ref.27).第20页/共25页21Thisresultissignificantforthefuturepredictionofcatalystactivityforseriesofchalcogenidesofrelatedmaterials.ProvidedthatthistrendcanbeextendedtoothermaterialsitmaybeusedgenerallytoguidetheselectionofevenmorepotentHERcatalysts.Theauthorspresenttheyfindingsinaclearandsuccinctmanner,althoughthecomparisontoliteratureactivitiesshouldpreferentiallybequantifiedifpossibleratherthanleftasaqualitativecomparison.Response:Wearepleasedthattheimportanceofthisworkisappreciatedbythe referee.In the last paragraph of Page 3,we compared our calculatedactivity of1T-NbS2tothat calculated byPan,and then the difference wasdiscussedaccordingly.Thecalculatedactivityof1T-MoS2isonlyqualitativelycompared with the experiments because the experimental situations aremore complicated.For example,there are coexistence of 1T and 1Hpolymorphsintheexperimental1T-MoS2and1T-WS2samples,andpossibleresidueoflithiumionsonthebasalplanes,andalsoexistenceofmulti-layersinananosheet,etc,allofwhichcanmaketheexperimentalresultsdifferentfrom the calculated one.Nevertheless,we reproduce the experimentalobservation that proton binding on the basal planes of 1T-MoS2 is muchenhanced relative to the case of 1H-MoS2,and in particular that theoverpotentialislessthan200mV.Thisisthecentralsubjectwearedevotedto address in this work,and therefore,the small difference between thecalculatedGandtheexperimentallymeasuredonewillnotchangethefinalconclusion.第21页/共25页22ThepredicatedelectronaffinitiesarepoorbythePBEfunctionalintheDFTcalculation,IsuggestthatitshouldbeincludedalargefractionofHFexchange.We think that hybrid functionals including the Hartree-Fock exchange are notnecessarily appropriate for describing interfacial chemical reactions such asmolecularadsorptiononsolids.Forexample,thepopularHSEhybridfunctionalhasbeen demonstrated to considerably overestimates the adsorption energies(New J.Phys.10,063020(2008).Indeed,we get a G of ca.0.05 eV for 1T-MoS2 of 1/8 Hcoverage using HSE,which is much different from the experimental onsetoverpotentialof0.187V.UsingB3LYP,anotherpopularhybridfunctional,wegetaGof ca.0.15 eV,much closer to the experimental result.However,the structuralparameterpredictionusingB3LYPisnotgood(NewJ.Phys.10,063020(2008).ThismeansthatincludingtheHartree-Fockexchangecanonlyimprovesomepropertiesbut worsens others.Interestingly,the calculated B3LYP electron affinity of theunstrained1T-MoS2(1.325eV)agreesalsowellwiththePBEresult(1.321eV,asshowninFig.3),indicatingthatthePBEelectronaffinitiesarereliable.In overall,the GGA-level PBE functional gives quite reasonable thermodynamicpropertiesandthecorrecttrendofthermodynamicchangeinducedbyouterfactors,whichhasalsobeenwellconfirmedbyalargenumberofpreviousliteratures(e.g.Nat.Chem.1,37(2009),JACS 127,5308(2005).Including the HF exchange can hardlyimprove the results anymore,but instead,the high computational cost renders thecatalytic calculations using large supercell an untouchable task.Indeed,we takenearlyonemonthtocalculatethedataofHSEandB3LYPforonlytheunstrained1T-MoS2.Itisunimaginableandunwisetotakeahybridfunctional,whichisincapableofdescribing all aspects properly,to recalculate all the thermodynamic data of
