Too much praise may be doing kids more harm than good. A cover story in Scholastic Instructor magazine asks whether kids today are over-praised. The worry is that while trying to build up kids confidence (自信), parents are paying little attention to kids real goals and achievements. In a recent study, eighth graders in Korea and the United States were asked whether they were good at math. Among the American students, 39 percent said they were excellent at math, compared to just 6 percent of the Korean eighth graders. But the reality was kind of different. The Korean kids scored far better than the over-confident American students. The disadvantage of too much praise is that kids may start to focus on the reward (奖励) rather than what they are learning. Worse, when a student fails, whose confidence comes from a blind sense of achievement rather than his or her real abilities, the result can be devastating (毁灭性). This doesnt mean we shouldnt praise our kids or that teachers shouldnt try to build up their students self-confidence. But self-confidence should be the result of good grades and real achievements instead of empty praise from others.Last month, Cognitive Daily reported that parents and teachers should be specific rather than general when they offer praise. An example of general praise is telling a child, “Youre smart.” Specific praise would be to say, “You did a good job on reading.”, or “You did great on your math test.” Kids who receive general praise about their abilities probably show “helpless” behavior when they meet with problems with learning, compared with kids who receive specific praise about their achievement on a task. The reason: a child who knows shes a smart girl feel defeated (挫败的) if she has trouble reading a sentence. But a child who has been told she is a good reader will probably have confidence in that specific ability and work a little harder to deal with a more difficult book.1. One of the questions I asked was "When you think of love, what color comes to your mind?”One person said “money". I didn't know what color that was, maybe green, but I wasn't sure, so , l didn't give it a color. Two people said love didnt have any color. Two other people said love was the color of the rainbow. That's a nice thought. Now only 3 people chose red as the color of love. This surprised me since that is the color used most on ValentinesDay(情人节).I guess passion doesn't necessarily mean love.4 people chose white and 4 people chose yellow. I think they want a pure love or a wise and happy love. Pink is the choice of 5 people who I think need beauty in their lives. Six people said either lavender, lilac(淡紫色,丁香紫)or violet was the color of love. I think all of them want some magic and mystery in their love lives. Green was the color chosen by 7 people as the color of love. These people must want a balanced love and maybe some money too.The most surprising answer was that 14 people chose blue. I think these people may know about love. Love should be sincere and true. Maybe if you have "the blues”, it is because you don't have love. Most blues music is about lost love. Maybe blue is the color of love. I just can't see sending a blue heart to my lover next Valentine's DayThis little survey is not scientific, but it is very interesting. Do you know not all people dream in color? Well, I hope everyone makes sure to daydream in the most wonderful and wild colors.阅读短文,回答问题1. What did the writer send out a while ago?_2. Can the writer send a blue heart to his lover next Valentine's Day?_D Next time you're in a public place, take a look around you, and count how many people are using their phones. I can tell you that it is probably more than half, whether you're in a bus, in a café or simply walking down the street. I'm not saying that I am not an example of this, but I wonder how people can spend so much time on their phones without actually talking to anyone in particular. We can now do almost anything with a phone. But has it gone too far? We spend too much time on our mobiles but not enough time talking to people in real life. Last time I visited London, I traveled by subway. I noticed that almost everybody else was on their phones except those who were asleep. People were playing games, reading articles and listening to music. Recently, my smart phone broke and I had to use an old basic phone just to keep in touch with my family and friends. I could only send text messages, make calls and play one game with it. And I loved it. I loved being free from the Internet, and I really didn't mind what my friends were doing or what the latest news was. I could enjoy my time watching the people around me and seeing what was going on. However, I knew that as soon as I got my smart phone back, I would be one of those people once again.1.
