the first sevenseconds when they meet you.So it is very important to make a good firstimpression.Actually,we can have a positive eflect on others throughusing our eyes, face, and body even before we have any words, that iswhat we say“body language. The key here is to be yourself by beingrelaxed and thinking of others instead of yourself. You have the power tohave a good effect on others because you are the only one who can beyou.2.Questions on the Topic and the Passage1)According to the passage, how long does it take us to judge the peoplewe meet?Seven seconds.2)What does the author mean by only by ourselves we can make the best use of it.Il Background Information1.Body Language is communication by the body that might include planned as wellas natural movements.Expression on the face, movements of the body, posture orposition, the tone of the voice, clothes, and sometimes smell, are some of the waysmost people use to send or receive messages, though they are not aware of it.Peoplein politics, sales, and acting use body language on purpose.2.Phi Beta Kappa PBK Key is an award given annually since 1980 to a member ofa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The key recognizes exceptional service given by themember to Phi Delta Kappa.Phi Beta Kappa is one of the many honorary academicsocieties on American university campuses.Their members mostly consist ofundergraduate students.3.Victorian Family is a family that lives like or actually lived in the time whenQueen Victoria was the throne in Britain. The term means the family follows therigid social rules and customs common during the time of Victoria.People who donot follow the rules and regulations of this time see its customs as old-fashioned.4.Six tips on how to make a good impressioni.Demonstrate immediately that the other person, not you,is the center of actionand conversation.Illustrate that the spotlight is on you only, and you will missopportunities fbr friendships, jobs, love relationships,sales,etc.ii.Demonstrate that you are a skilled listener by both giving positive verbal cuesas t4Hmm.interesting!”Tell me more, please.and nonverbal cues, such as eyecontact.iii.Show that you have paid attention to the new acquaintance from the start byusing his or her name to make conversation more personal.iv.Stay away from remarks that might bring about adverse results if you are notclear about the new acquaintances sensitivities.v.Pay attention to your appearance.Wearing a suit and having proper hair-stylewill convey the message:You attach great importance to this experience.”vi.A persons speaking style will impact the first impression. From theconversation, the listener can judge your intelligence, your cultural level, youreducation level, your leadership ability by the words you use.Ill Text Structure AnalysisThis is an argumentation. The writer presents the reader his ideas about“How toMake a Good Impression with a general statement that is supported by a list ofexamples.Listing is one of the common ways to organize ones viewpoints, ideas, causes,or even possibilities. All the examples in the list must be supporting thewriters viewpoints effectively without going into details.Punctuation and words initalics can help listing, too. The writer offers readers some advice by listing:You arethe message”,“Be yourselfUse your eyes,“Lighten up”.This passage can be roughly divided into three parts.Part One(Paral-2)This part is an introductory paragraph, telling us the mainidea of the article:What time you make the most important impressionon others or others leave the most important impression on you.Paragraph 1 tells us that you make up your mind about people throughunspoken communication within the first seven seconds of meetingthem.Paragraph 2 gives us some examples to illustrate the point.Part Two(Para 3-14)This part is the body paragraph, answering the question ofhow to make a good impression on others by giving four pieces ofadvice:Paragraphs 3 to 5 are about the first piece of advice:You are themessage.Your message includes physical appearance, energy, rate ofspeech, pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expression through the eyes, the ability to hold the interest of others.Paragraphs 6 to 9 are about the second piece of advice:To beconsistently you,at your best. When the audience see with their owneyes that you are not being yourself and you are sending mixedmessages, they would tell themselves that the speaker is not beinghonest.Paragraphs 10 to 11 are about the third piece of advice:Keep eyecontact with your audience.Look straight at those in the room andsmile.Paragraphs 12 to 14 are about the fourth piece of advice:Lighten up.In order to make others comfortable, you have to appear comfortableyourself first.Part Three(Para 15)This is the concluding paragraph,64 Just be yourself,9,youalready have the power to have a good effect on others, because you arethe only one who can be you.IV.Structured writingA Paragraph of a Statement Supported by a List of ExamplesIn Text A of Unit 4,we see that a general statement can be supported by a listof examples. This is one of the most common ways to support an idea or an opinion. The key points for this kind of structure are:l.You have to list examples, just by naming them.It is not necessary to go intodetails about the examples,as the list of examples is quite enough to support thepoint.2.All the examples in the list must be supporting the point you are making.Have a look at part of Paragraph 2.Think about some of your most unforgettablemeetings:an introduction to your future spouse,a job interview,an encounter with astranger. The listing can be introduced by such as or like, but it is also possible tointroduce a list of examples with a colon, for example,in Paragraph 4:Others willwant to be with you and help you if you use your good qualities. They include:physical appearance, energy, rate of speech, pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expression through the eyes, and the ability to hold interest of others. The generalstatement is strongly supported by the examples in the list though the writer does notgo into details about each of the examples mentioned.(Now turn to page 90,look at the Sample Paragraph by using a list of examplesto support a general statement and then write a paragraph on one of the topics)V.Detailed Study of the TextWords&Phrases Study1.i
