writing.September 14th at the Unitarian Center Details and registration:www.SFWritingforChange.orgSFWC/San Francisco Writers Foundation is a nonprofit organizationBehind the Scenes of a Writing ConferenceWhen you attend a writing conference, you see a faqade(公众可见的场景)lhal took months or longer tomake up.Plenty is going on behind the scenes.Lets take a look behind the curtain. The day starts long before attendees walk through the door.Registration is set up,signs posted and tablesarranged.Logistics(后勤)all fall on the conference organizers. For example, the annual conference I direct inSan Francisco(see the poster above)is a simple one-day conference that takes more than eight months to puttogether and around 15 staff and volunteers to manage.Larger multi-day conferences have even more going onbehind the scenes.Overseeing it all is the conference director,a conductor who typically works with committee directors tomake sure everything runs smoothly.Over the course of the conference, staffers make sure everything stays ontrack. Its not unusual for staff to walk miles in a day and go without meals.Conference staff and volunteers are always behind the curtains making sure your experience is perfect.Thenext time you attend a well-run writing conference, take a moment to thank staff and volunteers for theirdevotion. They deserve all the praise they can get because without them, there would be no conference.【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。 56.Whats the latest time to start to arrange for the one-day conference in San Francisco?A.July,2019.B.March,209.C.September,2019.D.January,2019.【答案】D【解析】推理判断题。根据 Behind the Scenes of a Writing Conference 部分第二段中的“The day starts longbefore attendees walk through the door.Registration is set up,signs posted and tables arranged.Logistics(后 勤)all fall on the conference organizers. For example, the annual conference I direct inSan Francisco(see the poster above)is a simple one-day conference that takes more than eight monthsto put together”可知,这一天早在与会者走出大门之前就开始设立登记处,张贴标志,安排桌子,物流全部由会议组织者负责,例如,我在旧金山主持的年会(见上面的海报)是一个简单的为期一天的会议,总共需要8 个多月的时间去准备,再根据海报上的时间“September 14th at the Unitarian CenterDelails and registration:可知,9 月 14日在Unitarian中心登记详细信息和注册,而 9 月 14日的八个月以前是I 月份。由此可知,安排旧金山为期一天的会议最迟要在2019年 1月开始。故 D 项正确。57.According to the writer, the attendees of the 2020 San Francisco Writers Conference should praise t he.A.three speakers B.authors and editors C.staff and volunteers D.corporate sponsors【答案】C【解析】细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“The next time you attend a well-run writing conference, take amoment to thank staff and volunteers fbr their devotion.”可知,下次你参力口 个运行良好的写作会议时,花点时间感谢工作人员和志愿者的奉献。由此可知,作者认为参加2020年旧金山作家年会的人应该称赞此次年会的工作人员和志愿者。故 C 项正确。BDavid Miles,an Australian inventor has been accused of cheating desperate farmers by charging up to$50,000Australian dollars for delivering rain on demand without so much as explaining the technology behind his business. On the official Miles Research website,Miles explains that in the 1990s he realized that it was possible toinfluence weather patterns by creating a bridge between the present5 and a near-future event,in the physicalspace-time continuum. He found that by applying small amounts of energy intelligently, even a large, messyweather system approaching from the future could be eased. While somewhat fascinating,Miles5 explanation does little to explain how he is able to bring rainfall to thelands of farmers. He makes references to famous but debatable concepts like“the butterfly effect. We wereadvised against patenting because if basically exposing how it works, there will be a lot of big companies thatinvest in hunting out patents,M Miles said I understand the doubts, the only other way is to fully prove up ourscience and physics. If we did that, well lose it,it will be taken up as a national security interest and itll then beweaponized.Miles claims raised suspicions for obvious reasons, including a since-deleted section of his company website, which claimed that his technology used(electromagnetic scalar waves”,which scientists say dont even exist. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission(ACCC)has warned people against doing businesswith him,but the Australian inventor claims the ACCC is only trying to defame him and his company,as in realitythey are success basedif it doesnt rain, they don,t get paid.Consumers signed the agreement that if by the end of June they receive 100mm,they pay$50,000,if theyonly receive 50mm,they would only pay$25,000.Anything under half,we dont want to be paid,Miles said of ahandful of Wimmera farmers who agreed to take him up on his offer to deliver rain.Believe it or not,one of the farmers who paid David Miles for his so-called rain-making capabilities told ABCRadio that he was quite happy with the results.【语篇解读】本文是篇记叙文。文章讲述了澳大利亚发明家戴维迈尔斯被指控欺骗农民,因为他在没有解释其业务背后的技术的情况下按需提供雨水以收取钱财。58.David Miles claims to be capable of.A.influencing the weather system B.predicting the future eventsC.reducing the atmospheric temperature D.easing the gravitational energy【答案】A【解析】细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Miles explains that in the 1990s he realized that it was possible toinfluence weather patterns by creating a bridge between the present9 and a 4near-future event7 in thephysical space-time continuum.”可知迈尔斯解释说,在20世纪90年代,他意识到在物理时空连续体中,通过在“当前”和“近期事件”之间建立一座桥梁,有可能影响天气模式,由此可.知,大 卫 迈尔斯声称能够影响天气系统,故A项正确。59.ACCC issued warning against doing business with Miles b e c a u s e.A.he charged too much for the services providedB.there was no solid science to hack up his technologyC.his practice was a threat to national security interestD.he didnt officially patent his technology with ACCC【答案】B【解析】细节理解题。根据第四段中的“including a since-deleted section of his company website, whichclaimed that his technology used electromagnetic scalar waves”,which scientists say dont even exist.可知,迈尔斯在其公司网站上声称他的技术使用了“电磁标量波”,但科学家称这些技术甚至不存在,由此可知,ACCC警告人们不要与迈尔斯做交易是因为没有可靠的科学来解释他的技术,故B项正确。60.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Miles needed safer facilities for his business.B.Miles brought about good crops as expected.C.Miles wasnt discouraged by the critics.D.Miles was arrested by the local police.【答案】C【解析】推理判断题。根据第三段中的“We were advised against patenting because if basically exposing how itworks, there will be a lot of big companies that invest in hunting out patents,Miles said“I understandthe doubts, the only other way is to fully prove up our science and physics. If we did that, well lose it,it will be taken up as a national security interest and itll then be weaponized.“可知,迈尔斯说,“我们被建议不要申请专利,因为如果基本上暴露了它的工作原理,将有很多大公司投资于申请专利,我理解这些疑虑,唯一的另一个办法就是充分证明我们的科学和物理学,如果我们这样做(不申请专利),我们就会失去它,它将被视为威胁国家安全利益,然后将被武器化”,由此可知,迈尔斯并没有被评论家们吓倒,故C项正确。CEach year, backed up by a growing anti-consumerist movement, people are using the holiday season to callon us all to shop less.Driven by concerns about resource exhaustion, over recent years environmentalists have increasinglyturned their sights on our“consumer culture”.Groups such as The Story of Stuff and Buy Nothing New Day aregrowing as a movement that increasingly blames all our ills on our desire to shop.We clearly have a growing resource problem. The produces we make, buy, and use are often linked to thedestruction of our waterways, biodiversity, climate and the land on which millions of people live. But to blamethese issues on Christmas shoppers is misguided, and puts us in the old trap of blaming individuals for what is asystematic problem. While we complain about environmental destruction over Christmas, environmentalists often forget whatthe holiday season actually means for many people. For most,Christmas isnt an add-on to an already heavyshopping year.In fact,it is likely the only time of year many have the opportunity to spend on friends and family,or even just to buy the necessities needed for modern life. This is particularly, true for Boxing Day,often the target of the strongest derision(嘲弄)byanti-consumerists.While we may laugh at the queues in front of the shops, for many, those sales provide the onechance to buy items theyve needed all year.As Leigh Phillips argues, this is one of the few times of the yearthat people can even hope to afford such luxuries, the Christmas presents their kids are asking for,or just anappliance that works.”Indeed, the richest 7%of people are responsible for 50%of greenhouse gas emissions. This becomesparticularly harmful when you take into account that those shopping on Boxing Day are only a small part of ourconsumption“problem“anyway. Why are environmentalists attacking these individuals, while ignoring suchpeople as Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who has his own 1.5bn yacht with a missile defencesystem?Anyway,anti-consumerism has become a movement of wealthy people talking down to the working classabout their life choices, while ignoring the real cause of our environmental problems. It is no wonder one ischanging their behaviours-or that environmental destruction continues without any reduction in intensity.【语篇解读】本文是说明文。文章介绍了反消费主义其实是富人对工人阶级的生活选择进行贬低的运动,而忽视了我们环境问题的真正原因,这丝毫不会让环境问题得到改善。61.It is indicated in the 1st paragraph that during the holiday season, many consumers.A.ignore resource problems B.are fascinated with presentsC.are encouraged to spend less D.show great interest in the movement.【答案】C【解析】细节理解题。根据第一段中的“people are using the holiday season to call on us all to shop less.“可知,每年人们都利用假期呼吁我们大家减少购物。由此可知,在假期,消费者被鼓励少花钱。故 C 项正确。62.It can be inferred from Paragraphs 2 and 3 that the environmentalist m o v e m e n t.A.has targeted the wrong personsB.has achieved its intended purposesC.has taken environment-friendly measures D.has benefited both consumers and producers【答案】A【解析】推理判断题。根据第三段中的“But to blame these issues on Christmas shoppers is misguided, and putsus in the old trap of blaming individuals fbr what is a systematic problem.”可知,但是,把这些问题归咎于圣诞购物者是被误导的,让我们陷入了把一个系统性问题归咎于个人的老陷阱。由此可知,环境保护主义运动瞄准了错误的对象。故 A 项正确。63.The example of Roman Abramovich is used to show environmentalists,.A.madness about life choices B.discontent with rich lifestyleC.ignorance about the real cause D.disrespect fbr holiday shoppers【答案】C【解析】推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“Indeed, the richest 7%of people are responsible for 50%ofgreenhouse gas emissions. This becomes particularly harmful when you take into account that thoseshopping on Boxing Day are only a small part of our consumption“problem“anyway. Why areenvironmentalists attacking these individuals, while ignoring such people as Russian billionaire RomanAbramovich, who has his own 1.5bn yacht with a missile defence system?” 64.It can be concluded from the text that telling people not to shop at Christmas is.A.anything less than a responsibility B.nothing more than a biasC.indicative of environmental awareness D.unacceptable to ordinary people【答案】B【解析】推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Anyway,anti-consumerism has become a movement of wealthypeople talking down to the working class about their life choices, while ignoring the real cause of ourenvironmental problems.”可知,不管怎样,反消费主义己经成为一场富人对工人阶级的生活选择进行贬低的运动,而忽视 我们环境问题的真正原因。由此可知,告诉人们圣诞节不要购物不过是一种偏见。故 B 项正确。DA story posted by The New York Post Monday tells the tale of Katrina Holte,a Hillsboro woman who quit herjob to cosplay a 1950s housewife.Let me start by expressing admiration to Holte for using her 2019 freedoms to follow her 1950s dreams.Everyone should be so lucky as to get to decide what they wear and how they spend their time.Thafs the future ourforemothers fought for.But as much fun as I am sure she is having living a vintage(复古的)life, which literally includes watching showslike I Love Lucy“and listening to vinyl recordings(亥 ij录碟片),I think its important to remember that being a 1950shousewife was actually totally awful, and something our grandmothers and mothers fought against. For example, once I called my grandma and asked her for her recipe for Cloud Biscuits, these delicious biscuitsshe used to make that we would cover with butter and homemade raspberry jam on Thanksgiving.“Why would you want that?”she said.44Go to the store.Go to the freezer section.Buy some pre-made biscuitsand put them in the oven. She straight-up refused to give me the recipe, because it was hard and took a long time to make.In her mind, itwas a waste of time.Getting off the phone,it occurred to me that spending every day of your life serving a husband and five childrenwasnt fun at all.And then there are the grandchildren who eventually come along demanding Cloud Biscuits, awhole new expanded set of people to feed. She was basically a slave to those hungry mouths, cooking scratch meals three times a dayWhen she wasnt trapped in the kitchen, she had to keep the house clean, make sure she looked good enough tobe socially acceptable, and make sure her kids and husband looked good enough to be socially acceptable. And shehad no days off.I know my grandma loves her kids and her grandkids, her husband and the life she led,but man,it must havebeen a lot of thankless, mindless labor. No wonder everyone went all-in on processed foods when they came around.Imagine the nice break somethinglike a microwave dinner would give a woman working, unpaid, for her family every single day?I also had another grandma. She was a scholar who helped fbund the Center for the Study of Women in Societyat University of Oregon. She was a pioneering second-wave feminist who wrote books, gave lectures and traveled theworld. But,she did all of that after divorcing my grandpa, when most of her kids were out of the house.Back then,in the1950s and the 1960s,there was no illusion about women“having it all”.How could that even possibly happen? If youwere taking care of a family, waiting on your husband, you had no time to follow your dreams, unless you made thatyour dreamA lot of women took that approach. We call it Stockholm Syndrome now.And of course, these women I am talking about are upper-middle-class white women.Romanticizing the 1950sis especially disgusting when you think about how women of color and poor women were treated back then, and thelack of education and choices available to them.Because the women in this country demanded something approaching equality,Holte has the chance to live outher fantasy. Not every woman in America is so lucky. We still dont have pay equality and in many states,we still dont have autonomy over our own bodies.Poorwomen and women
