bought an Australian car and has gone to AliceSprings,a small town in the centre of Australia.He willsoon visit D arwin.From there,he will fly to Perth.My brother has never been abroad before,so he is findingthis trip very exciting.Lesson 5 No wrong numbers 无错号之虞Mr James Scott has a garage in Silbury and now he hasjust bought another garage in Pinhurst.Pinhurst is onlyfive miles from Silbury,but Mr Scott cannot get atelephone for his new garage,so he has just boughttwelve pigeons.Yesterday,a pigeon carried the firstmessage from Pinhurst to Silbury.The bird covered thedistance in three minutes.Up to now,Mr Scott has sent agreat many requests for spare parts and other urgentmessages from one garage to the other.In this way,hehas begun his own private telephone service.Lesson 6 Percy B uttons 珀西 巴顿斯I have just moved to a house in B ridge Street.Yesterday abeggar knocked at my door.He asked me for a meal anda glass of beer.In return for this,the beggar stood on hishead and sang songs.I gave him a meal.He ate the foodand drank the beer.Then he put a piece of cheese in hispocket and went away.Later a neighbour told me abouthim.Everybody knows him.His name is Percy B uttons.He calls at every house in the street once a month andalways asks for a meal and a glass of beer.Lesson 7 Too late 为时太晚The plane was late and detectives were waiting at theairport all morning.They were expecting a valuable parcelof diamond from South Africa.A few hours earlier,someone had told the police that thieves would try tosteal the diamonds.When the plane arrived,some of thedetectives were waiting inside the main building whileothers were waiting on the airfield.Two men took theparcel off the plane and carried it into the C ustoms House.While two detectives were keeping guard at the door,twoothers opened the parcel.To their surprise,the preciousparcel was full of stones and sand!Lesson 8 The best and the worst 最好的和最差的Joe Sanders has the most beautiful garden in our town.Nearly everybody enters for The Nicest G ardenC ompetition1 each year,but Joe wins every time.B illFriths garden is larger than Joes.B ill works harder thanJoe and grows more flowers and vegetables,but Joesgarden is more interesting.He has made neat paths andhas built a wooden bridge over a pool.I like gardens too,but I do not like hard work.Every year I enter for thegarden competition too,and I always win a little prize forthe worst garden in the town!Lesson 9 A cold welcome 冷遇On Wednesday evening,we went to the Town Hall.It wasthe last day of the year and a large crowd of people hadgathered under the Town Hall clock.It would strike twelvein twenty minutes time.Fifteen minutes passed and then,at five to twelve,the clock stopped.The big minute handdid not move.We waited and waited,but nothinghappened.Suddenly someone shouted,Its two minutespast twelve!The clock has stopped!1 I looked at my watch.It was true.The big clock refused to welcome the NewYear.At that moment everybody began to laugh and sing.Lesson 10 Not for ja zz不适于演奏爵士乐We have an old musical instrument.It is called aclavichord(翼琴).It was made in G ermany in 1681.Ourclavichord is kept in the living-room.It has belong to ourfamily for a long time.The instrument was bought by mygrandfather many years ago.Recently it was damaged bya visitor.She tried to play jazz on it!She struck the keystoo hard and two of the strings were broken.My fatherwas shocked.Now we are not allowed to touch it.It isbeing repaired by a friend of my fathers.Lesson 11 One good turn deserves another 礼尚往来I was having dinner at a restaurant when Harry Steelecame in.Harry worked in a lawyers office years ago,buthe is now working at a bank.He gets a good salary,buthe always borrows money from his friends and never paysit back.Harry saw me and came and sat at the sametable.He has never borrowed money from me.While hewas eating,I asked him to lend me&2,To my surprise,he gave me the money immediately.have neverborrowed any money from you,1 Harry said,so now youcan pay for my dinner!1Lesson 12 G oodbye and good luck 再见,一路顺风Our neighbour,C aptain C harles Alison,will sail fromPortsmouth tomorrow.We shall meet him at the harbourearly in the morning.He will be in his small boat,Topsail.Tapsail is a famous little boat.It has sailedacross the Atlantic many times.C aptain Alison will set outat eight oclock so we shall have plenty of time.We shallsee his boat and then we shall say good-bye to him.Hewill be away for two months.We are very proud of him.He will take part in an important race across the Atlantic.Lesson 13 The G reenwood B oys 绿林少年The G reenwood B oys are a group of popular singers.Atpresent,they are visiting all parts of the country.They w川be arriving here tomorrow.They will be coming by trainand most of the youngpeople in the town will be meeting them at the station.Tomorrow evening they will be singing at the WorkersC lub.The G reenwood B oys will be staying for five days.D uring this time,they will give five performances.Asusual,the police will have a difficult time.They will betrying to keep order.It is always the same on theseoccasions.Lesson 14 D o you speak English?你会讲英语吗?I had an amusing experience last year.After I had left asmall village in the south of France,I drove on to the nexttown.On the way,a young man waved to me.I stoppedand he asked me for a lift.As soon as he had got into thecar,I said good morning to him in French and he repliedin the same language.Apart from a few words,I do notknow any French at all.Neither of us spoke during thejourney.I had nearly reached the town,when the youngman suddenly said,very slowly,D o you speak English?1As I soon learnt,he was English himself!Lesson 15 Good news 佳音The secretary told me that Mr.Harmsworth would see me.I felt very nervous when.I went into his office.He did notlook up from his desk when I entered.After I had sat down,he said that business was very bad.He told me that thefirm could not afford to pay such large salaries.Twentypeople had already left.I knew that my turn had come.Mr.Harmsworth,11 said in a weak voice.D ont interrupt,1he Said.Then he smiled and told me I would receive anextra&100 a year!Lesson 16 A polite request 彬彬有礼的要求If you park your car in the wrong place,a trafficpoliceman will soon find it.You will be very lucky if he letsyou go without a ticket.However,this does not alwayshappen.Traffic police are sometimes very polite.D uringa holiday in Sweden,I found this note on my car:1 Sir,wewelcome you to our city.This is a No Parking area.Youwill enjoy your stay here if at leastthirty-five years old.In spite of this,she often appears onthe stage as a young girl.Jennifer will have to take part ina new play soon.This time,she will be a girl of seventeen.In the play,she inHolland.B oth girls write to each other regularly now.However,they have decided to use the post-office.Letters will cost a little more,but they will certainly travelfaster.Lesson23 A new house 新居I had a letter from my sister yesterday.She lives in Nigeria.In her letter,she said that she would come to Englandnext year.If she comes,she will get a surprise.We arenow living in a beautiful new house in the country.Workon it had begun before my sister left.The house wascompleted five months ago.In my letter,I told her thatshe could stay with us.The house has many large roomsand there is a lovely garden.It is a very modern house,soit looks strange to some people.It must be the onlymodern house in the district.Lesson24 It could be worse 不幸中之万幸I entered the hotel managers office and sat down.I hadjust lost&50 and I felt very upset.1 I left the money in myroom,1 I said,and its not there now.1 The manager wassympathetic,but he could do nothing.Everyones losingmoney these days,1 he said.He started to complainabout this wicked world but was interrupted by a knock atthe door.A girl came in and put an envelope on his desk.It contained&5o.I found this outside this gentlemansroom1 she said.Well,1 I said to the manager,there is stillsome honesty in this world!Iesson25 D o the English speak English?英国人讲的是英语吗?I arrived in London at last.The railway station was big,black and dark.I did not know the way to my hotel,so Iasked a porter.I not only spoke English very carefully,butvery clearly as well.The porter,however,could notunderstand me;I repeated my question several times andat last he understood.He answered me,but he spokeneither slowly nor clearly.I am a foreigner,I said.Thenhe spoke slowly,but I could not understand him.Myteacher never spoke English like that!The porter out the fireand crept into their tent.Their sleeping-bags were warmand comfortable,so they all slept soundly.In the middleof the night,two boys woke up and began shouting.Thetent was full of water!They all leapt out of theirsleeping-bags and hurried outside.It was raining heavilyand they found that a stream had formed in the field.Thestream wound its way across the field an
