JobWarm-up Activity1.Topic Discussion1).How do young students and older teachers see the role of educationdifferently? On the one hand, most students only want to learn what is needed for theircareer or immediate success. In their eyes ones lifetime drifts by and why notenjoy life to his hearts content. So the key role of education is to prepare themwell for a prosperous career, which in turn ensures a financially comfortable lifefor them. But,on the other hand, older teachers, with longer and richer lifeexperiences, believe that the quality of life is not entirely determined by abalance sheet, and people can lead better lives if they can see beyond theirimmediate needs.2).What is“quality of life and how can it be improved? When talking about quality of life, people would naturally associate it withbeing financially well off.But the truth is that quality of life is not totallydecided by our financial status.More importantly,we also want to feel that wehave an understanding of the world outside our career, for human beings havecollected a great deal of knowledge in many different fields. To lead better lives,we should, first of all, develop a meaningful philosophy of life. While we arestriving to get financially wealthy,we should improve our moral sense at thesame time.3).How can we realize the life value?A great man used to say Life is half spent before we know what it is”.Thisclearly indicates that not every person is aware of the meaning of life before hegets old enough. Therefore,as college students, first of all,we must have adeep insight into the meaning of life through our practical life experience andget rid of any false illusion.Besides,we must acquire adequate knowledge, foster our ability to work independently, and grow ourselves into intellectualmaturity, thus paving the way fbr a successful career.More importantly, wemust develop our moral sense, which includes the sense of responsibility andthe sense of devotion.Only in this way can we live a meaningful life.2.Questions on the Topic and the Passage1)What is the conclusion drawn from the survey based on the responsesfrom over 188,000 students?Todays college beginners are more consumeristic and less idealistic than atany time in the 17 years of the poll.2)What do students think about the importance of developing a meaningfulphilosophy of life?It is less important than being financially well off or successful.3)According to the text, what is the duty of educational institutions? To help students become aware of the meaning of life.4)How can we improve our moral sense? We can improve our moral sense by acquiring knowledge accumulatedthroughout ages.5).According to the writer, what must educators prepare students for?It is a fact that the meaning of life does not dawn upon young people easily, soschools must help students gain an insight into the outside world beyond theiroccupation, get far-sighted and be able to see the relationship betweenindividual things.According to the author, educators must prepare students forfuture, not only for career success but also for something much moreimportant than a job.To make the point clear, the author tells of a cartoonwhere businessmen are having difficulty telling“right from wrong”.IL Background Information1.Macon is a city in the middle part of Georgia,U.S.A.2.Robins Resident Center:It is a service/training center for Husband(1894).III.Text Structure AnalysisThe essay is an argumentation for the point that theres a lot more to life than a job.Itis of a problem-solution pattern which can be roughly divided into three parts.Part One consists of Para.1 to Para.8,presenting the problem.Para.1 is a very generalstatement that the saddest thing about youth is that it is wasted on the young. This isan old conviction which serves as a lead-in to develop the discourse in the way howyouth is wasted on the young today. From Para.2 to Para.4,we can find a surveyconducted to find out what the youth today are thinking about. The survey report onfirst-year college students shows that things of material value are of great importanceto young people.Todays college beginners are“more consumeristic and lessidealistic than before. From Para.5 to Para.8,the writer provides facts to support theargument that the students today are more materialistic, from what they choose tolearn in college to what they prefer for work. Finally in Para.s 7 and 8,the writerpresents another examples if a“successful“student as being a sales representative.Sofrom Para.1 to Para.8,the writer builds up a problem with our youth today that theyare becoming more and more inclined to care more about material things rather thananything else like social responsibility.Part Two is made up of 10 paragraphs, from Para.9 to Para.18.This part is about howto deal with the problem presented from the previous 8 paragraphs. From paras.9 to13,the writer builds up his argument that it is the duty of educational institutions tohelp students understand the meaning of life,In this part the writer argues that it isnow more important than ever to help our students realize what is truly important inlife. And people can understand the meaning of life when they reach middle age. However,it is the duty of educational institutions to help students understand themeaning of life before they reach middle age.If we cannot, the whole system ofeducation is to be challenged. From paras 14 to 18,the writer continues to argue aboutwhat education should do for us.Para.14 puts forward the argument that educationshould teach us to see the connections between things,as well as to see beyond ourimmediate needs.Para 15 is a fact to show if people fail to find the connectionbetween things or see beyond their immediate needs, what the results will be-justlike a strike for higher salary ending with the loss of jobs.Para.16 is another fact toshow that in the money-making world, people are expected to tell right from wrong.Para.17 is an example of a person who is successful both in his life and in his career.Education can do both.In para.18 the writer quotes from Oscar Wilde,“we ought togive our ability to our work but our genius to our livers”.That brings out an idealmodel for education, being successful in both social life and ones own life career.Part Three is the last paragraph.Paragraph 19 concludes the essay by stating that oureducators should answer students9 cries for career education and ensure that studentshave the education that they will wish fbr later in life.IV.Structured WritingA Paragraph of an Argument Supported by FactsOne writing technique for an argumentation is to support an argument with facts, statistics, examples, reasons, etc. In this text we can find that facts are used to support anargument.Take paragraphs 14&15 fbr an example. In Paragraph 14 we have the argument:Education should teach us to see theconnections between things,as well as to see beyond our immediate needs. To supportthe argument the writer gives one fact in Paragraph 15:a strike fbr higher wages only todrive the employers out of jobs.V.Detailed Study of the TextWords&Phrases Study1.formal a.following
