The fact is that we can even get the ability to become strong, happy, or successful again after a difficult situation. At the age of eighteen, he was sent to work in a rural area of Shaanxi and was paralyzed (使瘫痪)in 1972. He died at the age of 59 in 2010. A painful journey ended after 38 years in a wheelchair and with three dialysis (透析) sessions per week for 12 years. However, his passion, talent, determination, and attitude towards life made him never resign himself to fate. He was one of the major Chinese writers, regarded by many in his country as a tough guy.2 When he stayed in Shaanxi, he lived in a poor and distant village for a long time, where he created a short story My Qingpingwan Distant Village. After he returned to Beijing in 1972, he worked for seven years in a factory. In 1985, a superb short story String of Life was published. It was translated by Annie Curie and was also adapted into a film Life on a String by Chen Kaige in 1991. In 2002, he won the Lao She Literary Award for a collection of essays Written Fragments in Remission of My Illness. In 2006, another novel My Travels in Ding Yi came out, which he wrote in three years when he could only work a few hours a day because of illness.3 Shi Tiesheng never complained about his experiences. Instead, he had a constant thinking on the meaning of life, which is also the heart of the great essay The Ditan Park and I. Ditan Park is located northeast of Beijing. There the author lived nearby and had been touring the park in a wheelchair. Like other writers, he wrote for his mother, who could not fully recognize him before his talent was accepted.4 Not only did Shi Tiesheng influence modern literature, but also inspired those experiencing adversity in life. Forthem, he set up a good example by keeping passion for life. His father objects, based on negative stereotypes (亥U板E象) of male ballet dancers.2 The film tells a story beginning in 1984. Billy Elliot, an 11 year old boy, loves to dance and has hopes of becoming a professional ballet dancer. Billy lives with his fatherJackie, whose wife is dead, and his older brother, Tony. Both of them are coal miners out on strike. His grandmother lives with them, who had once been dying to be a professional dancer.3 Billy s father sends him to the gym to learn boxing, but Billy dislikes it. He happens to see a ballet class that is using the gym. Billy joins the ballet class secretly. When Jackie discovers this, he forbids Billy to take any more ballet classes. But passionate about dancing, Billy secretly continues his lessons with the help of his dance teacher, Sandra Wilkinson. Sandra believes that Billy is talented enough to study at the Royal Ballet School in London.4 Once, Jackie catches Billy dancing in the gym. Seeing his son is truly gifted, he decides to do whatever it takes to help Billy realize his dream. Jackie s fellow miners and the neighborhood raise some money, and Jackie pawns (典当) Billy s mother sew Ellery to cover the cost. Then Jackie takes Billy to London to audition.5 Although very nervous, B川y performs well. Some time later, the Royal Ballet School sends Billy a letter of acceptance, coinciding with the end of the miners strike. Therefore, Billy leaves home to study in London.6 In 1998, 25 year old Billy takes the stage to perform as the Swan in Matthew Bourne s Swan Lake, as Jackie and Tony watch from the audience.
