Comics are now gaining a new respectability at school. That is thanks to an increasingly popular and creative programme, often aimed at struggling readers, that encourages children to plot, write and draw comic books,in many cases using themes from their own lives. The Comic Book Project was started in 2001 by Michael Bitz at an elementary school in Queens. Since its creation, the programme, which is mainly conducted after school, has spread to more than 850 schools across the country. It has gotten a big push from the current craze(狂热) among adolescents for comic book clubs and for manga,a wildly popular variety of comic originating in Japan. The point is not to drop a comic book on a child's desk and say “read this”. Rather, the workshops often give groups of students the opportunity to collaborate(合著) on complex stories and characters that they then revise, publish and share with others in their communities.Teachers are finding it easier to teach writing, grammar and punctuation with materials that students are fully invested in(投入). And it turns out that comic books have other builtin advantages. The pairing of visual and written plotlines that they rely on appear to be especially helpful to struggling readers. No one is suggesting that comic books should substitute for traditional books or for standard reading and composition lessons. Teachers who would once have dismissed comics out of hand are learning to exploit(利用)a style that clearly has a powerful hold on young minds. They are using what works.16. Women's education may be unusual territory for economists(经济学家), but enhancing women's contribution to development is actually as much an economic issue as a social one. And economics, with its emphasis on incentives, provides guideposts that point to an explanation for why so many girls are deprived(剥夺) of an education.Parents in lowincome countries fail to invest in their daughters because they do not expect them to make an economic contribution to the familygirls grow up only to marry into somebody else's family and bear children. Girls are thus seen as less valuable than boys and are kept at home to do housework while their brothers are sent to schoolthe prophecy(预言) becomes selffulfilling, trapping women in a vicious circle(恶性循环) of neglect. An educated mother, on the other hand, has greater earning abilities outside the home and faces an entirely different set of choices. She is likely to have fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development of all her children, ensuring that her daughters are given a fair chance. The education of her daughters then makes it much more likely that the next generation of girls, as well as of boys, will be educated and healthy. Few will dispute that educating women has great social benefits. But it has enormous economic advantages as well. Most obviously, there is the direct effect of education on the wages of female workers. Wages rise by 10 to 20 percent for each additional year of schooling. Such big returns are impressive by the standard of other available investments, but they are just the beginning. Educating women also has a significant impact on health practices, including family planning.Topic: The significance of female 21._ in developing countriesOpinionEducating girls is more 22._ than any other investment.FamiliesFrom lowincome familiesFrom educated mothers' familiesAttitudesGirls are of less 23._ than boys.Development should be for all 24._.25._There is 26._ investments in daughters.Girls are made to stay at home, 27._ housework.Girls and boys have 28._ chances.SignificanceEducating girls 29._ to social benefits, economic advantages and health practices, including family planning.30._Educating girls in developing countries is important and rewarding. 5AI can't agree more. 6B7D8C9Din honour of为了纪念,向表示敬意;be honoured to do sth 很荣幸做某事。 need not have(done)表示的意思是“本不需要(做)”, 其他选项不符合句意。 强调句型:It is/was 被强调部分that/who其他。14D15C. 根据第一段中的“Comics are now gaining a new respectability at school.”和最后一段中的“Teachers are finding it easier to teach writing, grammar and punctuation with materials that students are fully invested in(投入)And it turns out that comic books have other builtin advantages.” 根据第一段中的“That is thanks to an increasingly popular and creative programme, often aimed at struggling readers, that encourages children to plot, write and draw comic books,in many cases using themes from their own lives.” 根据第一段中的“Comics are now gaining a new respectability at school.”和第二段中的“the programme, has spread to more than 850 schools across the country.” 21. education22. beneficial/rewarded/valuable23. value/importance/significance24. children直接信息题。根据第三段第二句“She is likely to have fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development of all her children”可直接得知。25.
