is coming?”Task3:A View of HappinessS criptDr.Smith has proposed a reasonable,i f perhaps somewhat oversimplifies, view ofhappiness.According to his theory, happiness might be described as a s ta te ifbalance. And when human or certain animals achieve that balance, they rend toremain in that condition in order to repeat the happy feeling. To illustrate th is,w e m ay study two magnets.W hen th e ir positive and negative polesmeet, they are comfortably joined, and they remain there. In other words, theyhave attained a balance or sta te of happiness. If on the other hand, one ofthe poles is reversed, and positive pole is presses against positive pole, thereis resistance,in sta b ility, imbalance a sta te of unhappiness.Animals with some degree of in tellig en ce seem to find happiness inreinforcement.Once they have gained one or more of th e ir goals such as food, and water, they learn to repeat the actions that led to sa tisfa c tio n of thosegoals. This repetition or reinforcement produces a sta te of balance or sense ofhappiness.According to th is theory, only animals with a sig n ifican t capacity to learnshould be able to experience happiness. But in truth learning can take placethrough surprisingly simple short-term action such as scratching an itch, followed by pleasure, followed by more scratching, and so on.Thus learning canoccur with almost no conscious thought. For human beings, blessed with the a b ility to reason, goals are not limited tothe short-term satisfaction of needs.Indeed, there is a strong link betweenhappiness and the fulfillment of long-term goals.Even if human striv e for goalsthat are more complex and longer-term than the animals goals, once those goalsare gained, happiness is reinforced.1.W hy does the speaker mention“magnets”?2.According to the passage, what may animals do a fte r they have got food?3.Which of the following is true according to the speaker?4.What does the speaker say is special about the goals of human beings?5.Which of the following best captures the main idea of the passage?Keys:ID 2.C3.B 4.D 5.AIV.Speaking OutM O D E L 1 Dont l e t it get to you!Susan:You look so angry. What involved, but I believe some deserve specialattention.Heredity certain ly plays a role. The tendency to develop depression may beinherited;there is evidence that th is disorder m ay run in fam ilies.Physiology is another factor related to depression. There m ay be changes orimbalances in chemicals which transm it information in the brain calledneurotransm itters.M any modern antidepressant drugs attempt to increase levelsof certain neurotransm itters so as to increase brain communication. While thecausal relatio n sh ip is unclear;i t is known that antidepressant medications dore lie v e r certain symptoms of depression.Researchers also study psychological factors. They include the complex developmentof ones personality and how one has learned to cope with external environmentalfactors, such as stress.I t is freeqently observed th at low self-esteem andself-d efeatin g thinking are connected with depression. While it is not clearwhich is the cause and which is the effect,i t is known th at sufferers who areable to make corrections to th e ir thinking patterns can show improved mood andself-esteem.Another factor causing depression is ones early experiences.Events such as thedeath of a parent, the divorce of the parents, neglect, chronic illn e ss,and severephysical abuse can also increase the likelihood of depression la te r in life. Some present experiences may also lead to depression.Job loss, financiald iffic u ltie s,long periods of unemployment, the loss of a spouse or other familymember,or other painful events may trig g e r depression.Long-term stre ss at home, work,or school can also be involved.I t is worth nothing that those living with someone suffering from depressionexperience increased anxiety which adds to the p o ssib ility of th e ir alsobecoming depressed.Depression-causing Problem Description SolutionFactorsHeredity I t is inherited and run infamilies.Physiology changes or imbalances inchemicals reason and dont le t your emotionstake over”.Emotional reactions sometimes produce consequences or thoughts whichpeople may later regret or disagree with;but during an emotional state, they couldnot control their actions. Thus,it is generally believed that one of the mostdistinctive facts about human beings is a contradiction 矛 盾 between emotion andreason. However, recent empirical studies do not suggest there is a clear distinctionbetween reason and emotion.Indeed, anger or fear can often be thought of asan instinctive 本 能 的 response to observed fact. The human mind possesses manypossible reactions to the external world. Those reactions can lie on a continuum, with some of them involving the extreme of pure intellectual logic, which isoften cal led cold”,and others involving the extremes of pure emotion notrelated to logical agreement, which is called“the heat of passion”.The relationlogic and emotion merits careful study.Passion, emotion,or feeling can reinforce力 口 强 an argument, event one based primarily on reason. This is especially true inreligion or ideology, which frequently demands an all-or-nothing rejection oracceptance. In such areas of thought, human beings have to adopt a comprehensiveview partly backed by empirical argument and partly by feeling and passion. Moreover, several researchers have suggested that typically there is no puredecision or thought;that is,no thought is based“purely on intellectual logicor“purely”on emotionmost decisions are founded on a mixture of both.1.What results does the speaker may some from emotional reactions?2.What is the popular
