stress and anoutdoor life style are best for long lifePartC1.Your feelings about yourself arevery important;ninety-year-old peoplecan feel and act like fifty year olds if theyhave the right attitude to life.Somebody might say this to cheeranother person up to encourage theperson to feel better about himself orherself. The speaker probably has anoptimistic(and young)feeling about life.2.Forty isnt“old, its simply a“birth”into a new stage of life.It might be said to some oneapproaching his or her forties birthday. He or she doesnt fear to be forty, doesnt think forty is old,and thinks of“middle age”as being the beginning of aninteresting stage of life when he or shecan do new things.3.Years arent important;preserving youthful idealism is moreimportant In a debate about the problem ofaging, for example.Youthful ideals should be keptthroughout the whole life;if you keepthese ideals, you can stay long in yourattitude.4.Young people anticipate thefuture with the pleasure;older peoplereminisce about their youth.Perhaps in a situation whensomeone is reflecting seriously about life. Its a philosophical, analyticalcomment about attitudes.5.Age is not important;yourattitude towards your age and life ingeneral is crucial. In a situation to encouragesomebody to be more optimistic towardslife. The speaker is almost certainlyoptimistic;the suggestion is that there aremany ways to be old and some of themare good.6.Be virtuous when you are young ifyou want respect later in life.Perhaps in a context where anolder person wants to give friendly adviceto a youngster when a younger person iswondering about the course of action. The speaker sees a direct linkbetween actions in youth and theconsequences in later life.7.Youngsters only have opinions;their elders know the truth throughexperience.Perhaps in a social setting wherepeople from different generations areteasing each other The speaker almost certainlybelongs to the older generation and isconfident of his or her own superiorknowledge.8.The only alternative is to die-because you can not become young again. As a joke or a humorous comment, perhaps after someone has saidsomething negative about being old.He or she certainly views aging ina positive light.9.An old person who is loved has anextra bonus because love brightens theirlife;old age is like the winter of a personslife, but winter also has its beautiful orbright aspects, like flowers.Perhaps it would be said to anolder person,to remind him or her oflifes blessing.Ifs a comment reflecting both joyand sadness;it recognizes that some oldpeople enjoy the love of family, friends, neighbors, etc. But some are alone andlonely10.Young people see forty as“old”,but older people see fifty as“young”.This is perhaps more likely to bewritten rather than spoken.perhapsin an essay. The author seems to havesome optimism about being fifty. It is a reference to differentperspectives, different attitudes of variousages to“age”.11.People may think that being old isa misery, but having the years ofexperience old people help you to liveyour life in a better way.An alternativeinterpretation is that it is not simply theold age which makes old people feelmiserable. It is the accumulation of theirexperiences which make them miserable. The second interpretation of a rather wryjoke.Perhaps either as a joke or as aserious(but pessimistic)comment of life, almost certainly made by an older person. It could reflect a humorous,philosophical,non-serious view;or theopposite,a mournful cry.12.Experience(living long)teachesus how to live well.Again, perhaps it is more likely tobe written than spoken.Experience over many years isseen as blessings and benefits.13.Enjoy your youth and make themost of the opportunities which comeyour way;then, when you are older, youdont have any regrets that you wasted it.An older person.perhaps aparent-to a younger people;thecomment shows wry humor by suggestingthat the main preoccupation older peoplein that they lament their lost youth.He/She sees youth as pricelessand not to be wasted.14.The general, meaning is thatpeople change as they grow older.thespecific meaning of each stage depends onhow people understand the metaphors ofthe animals(and this varies in differentcultures).A likely Spanish interpretationis:at twenty people are concerned withtheir appearance,at thirty they are brave,at forty they carry heavy burdens,at fiftythey twist and turn and cant be trusted,at sixty they are loyal,at seventy they arewise 9at eighty they are nothing. As its rather long,it is more likelyto be part of a written paper. Now itcould be said by anybody au any stagebut probably originally it was written byan older person.Perhaps it reflects a cynicalattitude to the way peopledevelop.perhaps students might here beasked to explain what each of thedifferent creatures at the various stages oflife represents in Chinese or otherculture.15.The tide“ebbs”(i.e.its strengthand power is lessened)and human beingsget older and become less strong. The tidereturns as strong as ever and other peopleare young and their tide is rising.Spoken or read in a poem.Perhaps said by someone who, though he/she feels sad,can rationalizeand see that there is no reason to be sad.Expanding your information The child is the father of the manChildren grow up to become adults andwhat happens in childhood is vitallyimportant because adults develop on thebasis of their childhood.Just as a childinherits genetics from their parents, thestage of early childhood for an individual isthe social“inheritance“of each adult.this is the basis for the development ofthe rest of their life(when the child becomes“the man).Parents have children whogrow up;however, children also grow up tobecome parents, who have children in theirturn who also become parents.Bad is never good until worsehappens. When something bad happens it isdifficult to see anything good about it.Butwhen something even worse happens, whatwe thought was bad before doesnt look sobad after all.Of course, what is“worse”may also seem not so bad when somethingworse still happens! Our perceptions ofwhat are bad or good events are relative totheir events.Everything changes except changeitself.Change is in everything.Only the lawthat everything changes does not change. On the other hand,if everything changesthis should include change itself(the natureof particular changes should change or eventhe very nature of change itself.)If changechanges then this must include no changewhich would be a change from changing.Ifchange does not change, then there issomething to which the law of change doesnot apply-which means that noteverything changes. All rules have exceptions, including this one.A rule is general statement. It mayinclude everything in its scope or it mayhave its exceptions. The problem here isthat if the rule is that“all rules haveexceptions?then there are exceptions tothe rule that“all rules have exceptions”:does this mean that the rule isnt a rule orthat the exception isnt an exception or thatthe exception to the rule that“all rules haveexceptions”means that there are noexceptions, including the exceptions to therule that“all rules have exceptions 9.?A sadist is a person who is kind toa masochist.A sadist is someone who gets pleasurefrom hurting or being cruel to someone else.A masochist is someone who gets pleasurefrom being hurt.We expect the sadist to benasty to others, including being nasty to themasochist. But the sadist knows that themasochist wants to be hurt,so being kind tothe masochist(who expects to be hurt bythe sadist)is a way for the sadist to getpleasure. The problem now is that the sadistis getting pleasure by not hurting someone(which means that the sadist isnt being asadist.)A second problem is that themasochist may be getting pleasure byanticipating being hurt(which he enjoysand looks forward to)and may therefore begetting pleasure from the kindness of thesadist(who as the masochist knows, wantsto hurt the masochist)because heanticipates being hurt by not being hurt yet(which means that the masochist isnt beinga masochist).Nothing is enough for the personto whom enough is too little. Some people are greedy. They wantmore than others.they want more than theamount which would satisfy others(and beenough for them). So for the greedy person“enough”(for others)is always too little(for the greedy one).So there is never“enough and nothing is enough for thegreedy person;this means there is no“enough”.But the problem is that it mayalso mean that if greedy person has“nothing”.It is“enough”(because“nothingis enough),in which case the person is notgreedy and is,in fact, satisfied with nothing(since he has“nothing“which is“enough”).If the rich could hire other peopleto die for them, the poor could make awonderful living.Everybody die at some time.Richpeople may wish to keep on living becausethey have lots of money to enjoy theirlife. So if the rich people could pay poorpeople to die for them, then the rich peoplecould keep on living for longer and keep onenjoying their life. The poor would make aliving(i.e,earn money to live)by dyinginstead of the rich.Of course, paying onepoor person to die instead of the rich personwho is dying would not be enough becausedeath is always waiting(for everybody, richor poor),so the rich would have to keep onpaying more and more poor people to diefor them.otherwise they can onlypostpone death for a short time.Sonow, many poor people die(paid for by therich)but the others who are still living getrich(keeping the money which their deadpoor relatives received from the rich).Butthese new rich people(who were poorbefore)will die-unless they pay poorpeople to die for them.If they do so,thepoor relatives of those poor ones who die forthe new rich will themselves eventuallybecome rich and will need to pay other poorpeople to die for them if they wish to keepon living.Unit5Understanding the text1.d)2.Exercise Diet Self-discipline Sleep3.a 8b2c7d4e9Developing your skillPart
