in the North and the Expo Site in the South.Shanghai Old Town as historic root of the City,with its characteristic round shape enclosed by Renmin Road,is the hinterland of the planning area.Together with Shiliupu this bank of Huangpu River is building the historic identity of the harbour city.This study is focusing on the area between Zhongshan Lu and Waima Lu for build-ing and masterplan structure and on the bank between Waima Lu und Huangpu mainly for a landscaping design.1.1 PLANNING?12Urban FabricThe historic fishbone shaped street structure is formed as the natural and fast-est connection for people and trading-goods moving between the harbour/ferry and Shanghai Old series of observation platforms.This pattern extends across the entire length of the platform,result-ing in a continuous wave-like rhythm,adorned with peaceful landscaped pockets along the waters building structures along new and old lanes and alleys organize themselves within the historic linear fabric.Following a clear concept,a mixture of old and new buildings emerge,therewith achieving a homogenous character.A new city quarter,with own recognizable qualities emerges.The scale of the plots and permissible height development allows a high use and density on the valuable sites between Zhongshan Lu and Waima Lu,which never-theless can preserve of a vivid street life,a quality so typical for Shanghai.All these streets and building structures lead to the connecting Waima Lu and to access stairs onto the new designed Shoreline Promenade.The new extending Shoreline is reachable from all the properties in the shortest possible distance and permeability to the city quarters behind wider or narrower zones,inviting visitors to linger.The central green zone offers a wide flowing gesture a generous point of contact and connection of the new Puxi Financial center with the River.The new buildings flank this green aisle with a narrower denser building structure of high quality dispersed with historic relicts,which will,as a shoreline ensemble,set the image for the new city quarter.?20Planning StructureAn important central connection between New Puxi Financial Circle and the river,which is already fixed in the Regulatory Plan is separating the planning site with a length of about 3 km?into a north and south part.The north area is charac-terised by the historic buildings directy at the riverside,east of Waima Lu.The north end of the site is the Ferry Station in Fuxing Street axis.In the South Nanpu Bridge Ramp and the Nanpu Bridge Ferry station are building an endpoint to the new Waima Lu riverbank.Also the diagonal Green Axis between Financial Circle and the view and deep yards to the Convention Center func-tions,existing buildings,and Waima Road therewith enhancing the connection with the riverfront developments and attractors of the proposed Urban Design.Additional necessary vertical connections are safely and conveniently provided via staircases,escalators and elevators,making the underpass system an modern attractive connection to the circular skybridg of Dong Jia Du 1315 Plot in the east providing an important directly pedestrian connection to the heart of the planning area at the Central Public Garden Mountain,use established Name.An additional elevated walkway along the diagonal green axis to Dong Jia Du 1315 Plot provides important intersections to the northern development area.The skywalks are positioned to connect again with deepyards on one hand but they further cross Waima Road and connect directly to the warehouses and the waterfront promenade.The headquarter area also benefits from 2 direct connec-tions with the circular walkway of Dong Jia Du1315 establishing an additional attractive“business”connection.The extension of this system to the local/regional bus terminal and the adjacent subway line finally achieves a full integration of the elevated pedestrian walkways with important public transportation facilities mak-ing this the most important interference free safe pedestrian cities because of large dependence on motorcar and ignorance of pedestrian demands.Road is far away from urban life and lack of reasonable city size are all failures of many developed countries in urban development.Stress on public traffic developmentPublic traffic is not only a traffic approach,but also an effective measure to reduce environment burden.It should be actively utilized as a kind of facility to create equal traffic opportunities for citizens and increase city attractions.Intreoduce of bicycle systemRealization of coexistence of pedestrian and automobileSeparate fast traffic
