Executive Chairman,World Economic ForumPrior to the COVID-19 pandemic,anThe Davos Lab initiativeintergenerational crisis was already under way.Past generations created a socio-economicsystem that disproportionately rewards thehappy few,underfunds social security andinfrastructure,and puts the liveability of theplanet at risk for future generations.This is why I launched the Davos Lab initiativelast year,a multistakeholder approach that seeksto better understand the changing views andexpectations of the next generation on society,government and business.I grew up in what is now known as the golden ageof capitalism,and the same prosperity that enabledglobal progress and democracy after the SecondWorld War is now creating the inequality,socialdiscord and climate change we see today alongwith a widening generational wealth gap and youthdebt burden,too.Young people are right to bedeeply concerned and angry about this,seeing it asa betrayal of their future.I asked the question,“What enduring changes doyoung people foresee after the pandemic and whatwould Millennials and Generation Z do differentlyif they were in charge?”As members of this nextgeneration mature and become future leaders,consumers,workers and voters,my generation andbeyond the Silent Generation,Baby Boomersand Generation X must hear and act upon theirinsights to survive and thrive.For Millennials,the 2008 financial crisis andthe Great Recession resulted in significantunemployment,huge student debt and a lack ofmeaningful jobs.Now,for Generation Z,COVID-19is another aeon-shaping event.From schoolshutdowns and social distancing to worseningunemployment and mass protests,young peopletoday are coming of age in the midst of dramaticsocio-economic turmoil.The Davos Lab is an initiative of the WorldEconomic Forum Global Shapers Community,anetwork I created to ensure that the next generation people between the ages of 20 and 30 wouldbe empowered to help shape our common future.Global Shapers inform each other about the localand global challenges they see and support oneanother to address them.They are active in morethan 450 cities in 150 countries around the world from Atlanta to Accra to Zurich and Zagreb.With every passing year,the issues facing the nextgeneration seem to get worse,not better.Theassumption of my generation that children willenjoy a better standard of living than their parentsdid is no longer a given.But we cant let thisrealization stifle us.The year 2021 is the time tostart thinking and acting long-term again and tomake intergenerational parity the norm.Working together,Global Shapers organizedDavos Lab dialogues in 146 cities on the 10 keyissues they identified as being most pressingto their collective future.The dialogues reachedan audience of more than 2 million people andgenerated 40 policy recommendations to endintergenerational injustice and build a better societyfor tomorrow.It is fitting that this important workcoincides with the Communitys 10th anniversary.The idea that we need to rebuild differently afterCOVID-19 is widely shared.The window for actionis open,but we need to move swiftly.We needa society,economy and international communitydesigned to care for all people,especially youngpeople,who are the most important and mostaffected stakeholders when talking about ourglobal future.They are also the people who havethe most innovative ideas and energy to builda better society for tomorrow.Young peopleare best placed to lead this transformation.I invite all stakeholders to read the Shapers ideas,which are poised to become the next normal.After you do,I hope that you,too,conclude thattransparency,accountability,trust and a focus onstakeholder capitalism will be key to meeting thisgenerations ambitions and expectations.Only byworking together,across divides,can we build themore resilient,inclusive and sustainable society andeconomy we need in the post-COVID-19 world.Davos Lab:Youth Recovery Plan3Executive summaryWhat enduring changes do young peopleDavos Lab Survey conducted in 187 countries.between the ages of 20 and 30 foresee afterthe COVID-19 pandemic,and what wouldMillennials and Generation Z do differently if theywere in charge?This question was posed atthe launch of the Davos Lab initiative in January2021 during the World Economic Forum DavosAgenda Week.To answer this question,theDavos Lab conducted surveys and dialogues on10 key issues,referred to as the 10 pillars in thisreport,that are most likely to shape the life andoutcomes of a child born during the pandemic.The total reach of this work amounts to over2.3 million people.Through these dialoguesand the survey,young people shared theirviews,ideas and fears,which are summarizedin this report as a set of actionable insights andrecommendations for key decision-makers.Regarding jobs,almost half of the youngpeople surveyed said they feel inadequatelyskilled,and close to a quarter responded theywould risk falling into debt if faced with anunexpected medical expense.Labour marketfragility,compounded by an almost bankruptsocial security system,is pushing more youngpeople to rally behind a global wealth tax tohelp finance more resilient safety nets and tomanage the alarming surge in wealth inequality.One result of the pandemic is a far more organizedgeneration of young voters,consumers andinvestors who are rallying behind urgent climate,fiscal and social justice.Without a doubt,thisgeneration poses an existential risk to institutionsthat seek to simply revert to business as usual.However,it also represents a massive opportunityfor governments and businesses in search of aprogressive mandate.On the climate front,young people stated theywould like to halt all new coal,oil and gasexploration and development immediatelyto limit global warming to 1.5C,a level beyondwhich devastating climate impacts couldspiral out of control.They call on financialinstitutions to avoid bankrolling or underwritingcompanies that seek to start new fossil fuelexploration and development,and on firmsto actively replace corporate board directorswho are unwilling to wind down fossil fuelsor transition to cleaner energy sources.In just three months,the Global ShapersCommunity organized virtual dialogues andsurveys around the world.These local dialoguesspanned the gamut from exclusive dialogueswith undocumented migrants to public forumsinvolving heads of states and public figures.Thisreport is based on 344 dialogues held in 146 citiesand on internet,particularly for close to halfof the global population who lack access tothe web and for those contending with internetblackouts.A$2 trillion digital access plan isrecommended to service this gap,as is a planto decrease data costs and to sanction statesthat resort to internet shutdowns.Moreover,the surge in exponential technologies in theGlobal North also presents concerns related tomisuse,such as a state deploying surveillancetechnology to curtail youth activism.the same time,measures to minimize the spread ofmisinformation both online and through traditionalmedia are presented as effective remedies againststale political leadership,and in essence call forregulated social media to combat fake news andextremist views.The effects of misinformation this past year wereparticularly evident,indicating greater distrust ininstitutions.To be better prepared against futureshocks,young people are embracing the powerof community-driven health solutions to rebuildtrust in health systems,and are calling on G7nations and international organizations to safeguardvaccine equity at the onset of future health crises.Moreover,the mental health crisis,spurred bywaves of lockdowns,represents an existential andsilent epidemic that requires massive investment toprevent and tackle the stigma associated with it.Young people are worried about another wave ofmental health problems as workers are being askedto return to their workplaces.Unsurprisingly,the Davos Lab Survey showsthat physical safety ranks as the greatestsafety concern among young people,apotential function of the increased use ofsurveillance technology and militarized policingagainst activists and people of colour.All in all,young people believe that each of thefractures that have come to bear are manifestationsof an underlying political problem.Concernssuch as corruption,austerity and stalepolitical leadership have become prioritiesfor young people if they are to keep faith in thepolitical system,as more young people holdfaith in governance by a system of artificialintelligence than by a fellow human being.Tocurtail the problem,young people are calling onphilanthropic donors to direct greater investmentsto programmes that help young progressive voicesjoin government and become policy-makers.AtTo mount the response required to usher in thisnew world,the Davos Lab also held dialogues onwhat a matured form of youth activism could looklike.Drawing on the pitfalls of well-intended youthmovements borne out of the 2008 financial crisis(e.g.Occupy,Arab Spring),the Davos Lab askedparticipants to devise principles to guide youngpeople as they advocate for a more inclusive post-COVID period.The culmination of these dialogues ispresented in the Millennial Manifesto.Davos theworlds first attempt at redefining theparameters and efficacy of youth activismin a post-COVID world marked by greaterexamples of systemic inequalities.As uprooting systemic problems are particularlydifficult for young people wrestling with challengesrelated to experience and credibility,this MillennialManifesto provides timeless principles to sharpentheir activism into their later globalcontext and that all parts of the world co-exist.We will share learnings to avoid replication.We willtest,iterate and improve our approach to becomebetter leaders and ancestors.We will build authentic relationships withcommunities most impacted by inequities andinjustices.We will acknowledge why we care aboutissues and who we are in relation to them.We willjoin forces,share power and make
