课时规范训练(二十七).阅读理解AHave you ever found yourself in this situation:You hear a song you used to sing when you were a childa bit of nostalgia(怀旧) or “blast from the past,” as we say. But it is not a distant childhood memory. The words come back to you as clearly as when you sang them all those years ago.Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in a song was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages. Here is what they did. Researchers took 60 adults and randomly divided them into three groups of 20. Then they gave the groups three different types of “listenandrepeat” learning conditions. Researchers had one group simply speak the words. They had the second group speak the words to a rhythm, or beat. And they asked the third group to sing the words. All three groups studied words from the Hungarian language for 15 minutes. Then they took part in a series of language tests to see what they remembered. Why Hungarian, you ask? Researchers said they chose Hungarian because not many people know the language. It does not share any roots with Germanic or Romance languages, such as Italian or Spanish. After the tests were over, the singers came out on top. The people who learned these new Hungarian words by singing them showed a higher overall performance. They did the best in four out of five of the tests. They also performed two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them.Dr. Katie Overy says singing could lead to new ways to learn a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are contained in a catchy 3, or memorable 4, tune 5.Dr. Ludke said the findings could help those who struggle to learn foreign languages. On the University of Edinburgh's website Dr.Ludke writes,“This study provides the first experimental evidence that a listenandrepeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”1The “song” mentioned in the first paragraph is intended to _.Arecall the pastBattract the readersCintroduce the topicDcompare the childhood with the present2According to the passage, which language doesn't share the same root with Germanic or Romance languages?AHungarian.BSpanish.CItalian. DEnglish.3Based on the last two paragraphs, we can conclude that _.Asinging is the best way to learn a languageBthe brain probably works best when the foreign language learners sing the wordsCa listenrepeat method is very effective for any language learnerDDr. Katie Overy and Dr. Ludke disagree with each other4In which situation can the finding of the research be applied?AA mother is going to teach her baby how to speak.BA child is going to have his first music lesson.CA student is going to learn a new English song.DAn American is going to learn some Chinese.BWe do not usually think about how our language works.Talking is such a natural, everyday activity that we do not often stop to consider how it actually works. When we do study our language, though,we are often surprised that we are able to understand our conversations.Words can mean so many different things. However,it turns out that the speaking situation helps a lot in making language work.First, the speaking situation helps make words more particular. For example, the word “dog” can describe a dog that a speaker saw in a dream. It can also be used to discuss a neighbor's dog.No language has a separate word for the idea “dog that I saw yesterday” and another word for the idea “dog that I saw in a dream”This is because the speaking situation makes it clear what speakers mean when they use words. So,when you have a conversation with your neighbor, the knowledge that you have a dog tells your neighbor what the word “dog” probably means in that situation. The speaking situation also helps make language clearer. For example, the word “bank” has two possible meanings. It can mean “a place where people keep money”,but it can also mean “the side of a river”So the sentence “I went to the bank” is not clear. It could mean I went to the side of the river or it could mean I went to the place where my money is kept. However,if the speaker is talking about fishing or going to the mountains, others probably know that “bank” means “the side of a river”The things that speakers say may not always be clear.Sometimes the words are not very particular, but the speaking situation can provide the meaning.Other times words may have many meanings. Then the speaking situation limits the right meaning. This extra knowledge from the situation is very important to understand language.5The passage is mainly about_.Athe best time and place to talk to othersBhow the speaking situation helps language workCwhat to say in difficult situationsDhow our language works6According to the passage,we can safely say that_.Athe speaking situation does not affect the meaning of wordsBspeaking is not very natural for most peopleCthe speaking situation is not importantDpeople often do not consider how talking works7By using the example of the word “dog” ,the writer wants to show that_.Aa word may need to be explained in a conversationBa word may have different meaningsCthe speaking situation helps people understand the particular meaning of a wordDthe meaning of words is not particular8According to the passage,we can know the meaning of the word “bank” by referring to_.Athe time and the place where the conversation happensBthe occupation of the person who uses the wordCearlier or later parts of the conversationDa reliable dictionary CWhy read, and sometimes even write poetry? That question is not difficult to answer if we change the word poetry to songs.I sing when I feel good. When I sing my favorite songs, I feel even better. Sometimes when I am listening to music and to the song words, I feel that it is written for me. A good song always makes me feel something. They help me get through the day.They_are_like_bright_and_warm_colors_in_the_middle_of_grays_and_shades. I like songs about love and friendship. In the beginning I felt quite strange. Now I always lock the door. Reading aloud gives you a strange feeling, but when you have some practice and fall into the rhythm, and the sounds of the words, it is really a special experience.I started with small poems, but now I think I most like long poems. I have different feelings with different poems. When I have had a bad day at school, I read Keats and forget everything. When I am sad I read Wordsworth by the light of a candle. When the poem is finished, I close the book and my sadness is gone.9According to the writer, _.Apeople like poems the same way they enjoy songsBpoetry is the same form of art as songsCpeople always feel the same while reading poemsDthe meaning of words is the key to appreciating poetry10Which of the following statements is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?ASongs are like different colors in different times.BSongs can help people better understand colors.CSongs can describe a mixture of different colors.DSongs can bring people warmth and comfort.11What we can infer from the passage is that _.Athe writer likes singing songs aloud at any timeBsongs and poems can help get over bad emotionsCthe writer's native language is EnglishDthe writer likes songs better than poems12What can we know about the poems of Keats and Wordsworth through the passage?AKeats' poems are full of bad feelings.BWordsworth's poems contain much sad description.CBoth of their poetry can create positive feelings.DThe themes of their poems are not different at all. DFor about three years now, I have been writing poetry. It was not until my junior year in high school that I developed an interest, love, and skill for writing poetry.Back in elementary school, I loved to write stories.I would write stories on post it notes and anywhere I could. Yet when I had to write a limerick (五行打油诗)for an assignment, I could not wrap my head around poetry. I had a very hard time figuring out how to rhyme words and have the words make sense. I eventually tossed the paper with the attempted limerick in the trash. I did not try my hand at poetry again until several years later. Many years later in my freshman year of high school, my English teacher gave my class a poetry project as an assignment. I still remember my limerick assignment and was afraid of doing the poetry project. For the project, we had to analyze a poem and write a response to it. I choose to respond to Robert Frost's poem Fire and Ice. I also wrote my own poem first. I become really excited when writing the poem. Two years later, I started writing poetry, as a hobby and for fun. To learn how good or bad my poems were, I handed them in to some magazines and contests.I won second place in the North Carolina Poetry Society's Sherry Pruitt Award Contest with a poem called The Ocean, and had my two poems published as high merit (优等) poems. I have continued to write poetry, and have even self published three collections of poetry in both print and ebook formats, which can be found at my store on Lulu. Now, I love writing poetry, but I don't hate writing short stories. I just find it more difficult and not my style of writing, even though I still write short stories occasionally.13When the author was a pupil, he _.Aliked writing storiesBwas good at writing poetryCcould understand poetry wellDwas often praised by his teacher14When given the poetry project in high school, the author was _.Aexcited BannoyedCconfident Dworried15The author took up writing poetry as a hobby when he _.Awas in Grade Three in high schoolBworked as a storekeeperCwas in Grade One in high schoolDwas at college16How did the author increase his confidence in writing poetry?AHe wrote a lot of poems and asked advice from his teacher.BHe published three collections of poetry by himself.CHe submitted his poems to magazines contests.DHe gave up writing stories and only wrote poetry. .七选五Your children are watching you._1_According to a health program, developing healthy habits is an important part for your children.
