When Dr. Henderson was assigning(指定) project mates for his introduction to experimental psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn't assign me to work with the intense, fiercely competitive, singularly serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate(命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren't there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably cause his grade-point average to take a nosedive. He wasn't outright mean or abusive. He just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.Needless to say, I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didnt say anything, lest I make things worse. The project required each lab team to develop a hypothesis(假设),set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, run the tests,do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.      When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades the exact opposite of me. I was outmatched. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didnt want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what. After lengthy discussions, we somehow agreed to do a study on the tactile-kinesthetic perception of space. I wasnt sure what it meant, but at least we had a topic. Paragraph 1: We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.Paragraph 2: One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. Character: Dr. Henderson, I(the author), The author's new project mate;  Setting: at school; at the hospital;  Plot: The teacher assign project mates and I was assigned to the fellow I wanted to avoid. I introduced myself to the new mate and met coldness. What we needed to do together to get grade. After the discussion, we decided the topic of our experiment. . . Conflict: I vs myself(my expectation was not met-best friend-fun friend-serious and competitive fellow); I vs my new teammate(学渣 vs 学霸); My new project mate vs nature (a serious disease); Solution 1:  adjust myself gradually(introduced myself actively and met coldness-tried to make the best of the situation-felt uneasy-stick to the project though outmatched and wanted to drop the class) Solution 2: active communication; didn't give up; stick to the project; Solution 3: my new project mate recovered from the disease because of my encouragement/support? Theme: friendship; my new understandings of a serious and competitive fellow. Gullickson), project, serious, teammate, alone, findings, grade, shared, discuss, satisfaction. Paragraph 1: We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.Paragraph 2: One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease.    情节、情感预测:    第七段:从“We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.“这句来看,并结合文章第四段内容和第六段内容“agreed to do a study on the tactile-kinesthetic perception of space“,本段应该主要围绕plans来展开,即实验开展的过程develop a hypothesis of the tactile-kinesthetic perception of space-set up an experiment to test the hypothesis-run the tests-do the statistical analysis and present the findings. 原文有两个语言特点是比较明显的,一是使用了很多心理描写,如第一段“I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn't assign me to work with the intense, fiercely competitive, singularly serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match.” 第二段从第三句开始都是心理描写,“I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably cause his grade-point average to take anosedive. He wasn't outright mean or abusive. He just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.” 第五段“I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didnt want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what. 第二个语言特点是用了非常地道的俚语,如“as fate would have it,” is a standard idiom meaning that fate played a factor in something. Another common use of this phrase would be "as luck would have it", which means that luck had an involvement in sth. 另外一个俚语是cause his grade-point average to take a nosedive, take a nosedive, which means an aircraft goesinto a sudden and rapid descent toward the ground leading with the nose of the plane or a person falls toward the ground face first or sth./sb. suddenly and rapidly begins to decline in physical, emotional, or psychological health or stability; to suffer a sudden loss or decline in value or success. take a nosedive比较形象的说明作者猜测同伴担心作者这么学渣,会极大地拖低他的GPA. 最后一个俚语是chicken out, which means to decide not to do something because one is afraid. We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. After several meetings, we started to click with each other. To catch up with him, I surfed the internet to dig more about our project. Our project went smoothly and we spent hours in the lab every time discussing and designing an experiment to test the hypothesis about tactile-kinesthetic perception of space. After several failures, we finally proved our hypothesis and collected a lot of data to support our findings. We were so excited and my teammate even squeezed out a smile instead of the serious look as usual. Now, we all looked forward to presenting our findings in front of the whole class next month. However, as fate would have it, God deliberately played a joke on us. (119 words)One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. Shocked and worried, I paid him a visit and when I came in, he wore a smile, which seemed that he didn't want me to worry. I was quite upset when he told me to present the project alone. He seemed to read my mind and said, "You've also put a lot of efforts and you are capable of accomplishing it." With his encouragement, I began to make PPT with all the statistics. The day finally came. Dr. Henderson made the whole presentation live so my teammate could watch it online. The presentation ended, followed by big claps. I could even picture the satisfaction on my teammate's face and hear him cheering loudly. The whole thing gave me a new perspective of judging people, not from one's look, but from one's heart by doing something together.
