34Sharing.docx

I left England for Sydney in September. It was a career move for my husband, and our 20-year-old daughter was feeling adventurous and decided to e, too. However, just before leaving England, my 79-year-old mother suffered a stroke (中风).Being strong and independent, she continues to live at home with the help of social services. But she couldn't look after the garden. I thought how wonderful it would be if there was an organization offering volunteer help. Friends asked me what I planned to do in Australia, and I told them I would be looking for a volunteer position with a gardening charitable organization. Imagine my surprise when I found just the organization I had been looking for - Easy Care Gardening (ECG)!There are several reasons why I volunteer for ECG. Firstly, as a newer to Australia I meet many great people who, like me, volunteer some of their time. We cover a large age range, but all love gardens and helping others.Secondly, through working with ECG I have been lucky enough to explore Sydney's North Shore that I might not have had the opportunity to visit otherwise. Finally, there are all those wonderful people who we call “clients(客户)" ,but are more like friends when we visit them often and tend their gardens. What great people I have met, and stories they have to tell - the family histories, where they e from and the reasons for immigrating to Australia. I find it a privilege to have access to private gardens which, in many cases, have been the joy of their owners for many years. Each oee is individual and reflects the character, needs and the history of each family. Indeed, the gardens reflect the multicultural and historical background of Sydney.【语篇解读】 本文是一篇记叙文,介绍了作者移居悉尼后加入 了 Easy Care Cardening组织,成了一名园艺志愿者的故事,以及作者 加入这个组织的原因。1. Nearly everything we touch, from grocery bags to drink bottles, to food packaging, contains plastic. Now, Amsterdam's Ekoplaza supermarket is making it a little easier for consumers to reduce consumption of single-use plastic bags and containers, which are blocking our landfills at alarming rates, with a special plastic-free aisle (通道).Believed to be the world's first, the aisle has 700 products on sale including rice, beans, yogurt, chocolate milk, cereal, snacks and meat. While items still require packaging, everything is housed inside reusable or recyclable containers made of glass, metal or cardboard. The unique idea was given to the grocery-chain officials by UK-based environmental group A Plastic Planet, which takes the lead to advocate for at least one plastic-free aisle in supermarkets around the globe. The non-profit has even created a signature “plastic-free“ mark to help consumers identify eco-friendly packaging. "This is a consumer-led campaign, “ said a group co-founder Sian Sutherland. "We're a grass-roots organization. So obviously we're working with industry and the government, but most importantly, we represent the public. ”Ekoplaza, which plans to roll out the plastic-free aisles across its 74 stores by the end of the year, is not the only pany trying to reduce plastic waste. In Berlin, the Original Unverpackt grocery store has been trying to change customer habits since 2014 by selling everything, from grain to produce and even soaps without plastic packaging. The supermarket, which requires customers to bring their own reusable containers, even sells chewable toothpaste that needs no tubes.Though it is encouraging to see panies trying to make a difference, for real change to happen, consumers have to avoid products encased in plastics, even if it means giving up their favorite food or drink. As Sutherland put it, “Plastic food and drink packaging remains useful and yet a destructive presence on the earth for centuries afterwards.”体裁:说明文 题材:环保 主题:减少塑料废物【语篇解读】 该文主要介绍了超市在减少塑料包装上的努力。【难句分析】Though it is encouraging to see panies trying to make a difference, for real change to happen, consumers have to avoid products encased in plastics, even if it means giving up their favorite food or drink.分析:本句是一个复合句。Though和even if都引导让步状语从 句。译文:尽管看到公司尽力在发挥作用令人鼓舞,但为了产生真正 的变化,消费者不得不避免使用塑料包装的产品,即使这意味着要放 弃他们所喜爱的食物或者饮料。5. What does Ekoplaza want to do by setting up a plastic-free aisle?A. Cut down managing cost.B Reduce plastic-packaging.C. Make shopping much easier.D. Increase the amount of sales.答案与解析:B 考查细节理解。根据第一段第三句“Now, Amsterdam's Ekoplaza supermarket is making it a little easier for consumers to reduce consumption of single-use plastic bags and containers, which are blocking our landfills at alarming rates, with a special plastic-free aisle (通道)”可知,Ekoplaza设立无塑料通道是为 了减少塑料包装,故选B。6 . According to the well-known saying, talking to yourself is the first sign of madness.1 . Talking to ourselves, whether out loud or silently in our heads, is a valuable tool for thoughts. Far from being a sign of madness, self-talk allows us to plan what we are going to do, manage our activities, and even regulate our emotions.2 . You are very likely to hear him/her talking to himself/herself: offering himselfVherself directions and giving voice to his/her frustrations. Psychologists refer to this as private speech that is spoken but directed at the self. We do a lot of it when we are young. As children, according to the Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, we use private speech to regulate our actions in the same way that we use public speech to control the behavior of others. 3,we don't abandon this system - we internalize (使内在化) it. Psychological experiments have shown that this so-called inner speech can improve our performance on tasks ranging from judging what other people are thinking to sorting images into categories. 4. One recent study suggested that self-talk is most effective when we address ourselves as "you" rather than "I” .We internalize the private speech we used as children - but we never entirely put away the loud version. 5, turn on the sports channel.
