Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET. (40 points)Text 1We all have defining moments in our lives meaningful experiences that stand out in our memory. Many of them owe a great deal to chance: a lucky encounter(相遇)with someone who becomes the love of your life. A new teacher who spots a talent you didn't know you had. These moments seem to be the product of fate or luck. We can't control them. But is that true? No necessarily. Defining moments shape our lives, but we don't have to wait for them to happen. We can be the authors of them. It is possible to create defining moments if we understand more about them. Our research shows that they all share a set of common elements. We start by asking: why do we remember certain experiences and forget others? In the case of big days, such as weddings, the answer is pretty clearit's a celebration that is grand in scale and rich in emotion. No surprise that ifs more memorable than a maths lesson. But fbr other experiences in life from holidays to work projectsit's not so clear why we remember what we do.Consider an experiment in which participants were asked to submerge(浸入)their hands for 60 seconds in buckets filled with 14 water. (Remember 14 water feels much colder than 14 air.) They were then asked to submerge their hands for 90 seconds instead of 60, but during the final 30 seconds, the water warmed up to 15. The participants were then given a choice: would you rather repeat the first trial or the second?Psychologists have explained the reasons fbr this puzzling result. When people assess an experience, they tend to forget or ignore its length. Instead, they seem to rate the experience based on two key moments: the best or worst moment, known as the peak, and the ending. In the participants9 memories, what stood out fbr them was that the longer trial ended more comfortably than the shorter one. So when we assess our experiences, we don't average our minute-by-minute feelings. Rather, we tend to remember flagship moments: the peaks, the pitsd氐谷)and the transitions. What we don't remember are the bits in betweensometimes there is little to distinguish one week from the next.Partly this is because there may be only a dozen moments in your life that show who you arethose are big defining moments. But there are smaller experiences, too, in the context of a memorable holiday, romantic date or work achievement. Once we understand how we remember certain moments and why, we can start to create more moments that matter.1、How does the author understand defining moments?A. We can create defining moments in our lives.B. Defining moments are just out of our control.C. No similarities exist between defining moments.D. Defining moments consist of smaller experiences.2、We can learn from the experiment that.A. the striking moments are more likely to be remembered.B. the length of an experience determines our memory of itC. it is meaningful to distinguish the bits in between flagship moments.D. all the components of an experience should be equally remembered3、What would probably be discussed in the following part of the text?A. What to prepare for life's trials.B Why to create defining moments.C. Whom to owe our good fates to.D. How to create life's big moments.Text 2Eco-Resort ManagementEcotourism is often regarded as a form of nature-based tourism and has become an important alternative source of tourists. In addition to providing the traditional resort-leisure product, it has been argued that ecotourism resort(度假村)management should have a particular focus on best-practice environmental management. Couran Cove Resort is such a tourist attraction located on South Stradbroke Island, Australia.Sustainable(可持续的)Practices of Couran Cove ResortSouth Stradbroke Island is separated from the mainland by the Broadwater, which is home to a wide range of plant communities. Located on the offshore island, the Resort is only accessible by means of water transportation. It provides hourly ferry service from the harbour on the mainland to and from the island. Within the Resort, transport modes include walking trails, bicycle tracks and the beach train. The reception area is the counter of the shop which has not changed in 8 years at least. Theaccommodation is an octagonal(/l角形的)building. These are large rooms that are clean but the equipment is old and in some cases just working. The ceiling fan only works at high speed for example. Beds are hard but clean. There is a television, a radio, an old air conditioner and a small fridge in each room.As an ecotourism-based resort, most of the planning and development of the attraction has been concentrated on the need to co-exist with the natural environment of South Stradbroke Island to achieve sustainable development.Water and Energy ManagementThere is groundwater at the centre of the island, which has a maximum height of 3 metres above sea level. The water supply is recharged by rainfall and is commonly known as an freshwater aquifer(含水层).Couran Cove Island Resort obtains its water supply by tapping into this aquifer and collecting it through a pipe. In order to narrow the water uses, all laundry activities are carried out on the mainland. The Resort uses LPG power station rather than a fuel oil station for its energy supply, supplemented(补充) by wind power, which has reduced greenhouse emissions by 70%. Hot water in the eco-cabins and for some of the Resort" s vehicles is solar-powered. Water efficient fittings are also installed in showers and toilets. Visitors who stay at the Resort are encouraged to monitor their water and energy usage by an in-house television system, and are rewarded with prizes (such as a free return trip to the Resort) accordingly if their usage level is low.EvaluationIn three years of operation, Couran Cove Island Resort has won 23 international and national awards. It has effectively implemented contemporary environmental management practices. However, the Resort" s growth will eventually be limited by its carrying capacity, and quantity control should be incorporated in the management strategy of the Resort.1 > In order to achieve sustainable development, the Resort.A. cancels the transportation service B. researches into plant communities C. provides high quality accommodation D. operates in harmony with its natural surroundings 2、What is applied for heating water on Couran Cove Island Resort?A. Time wasters could be people, events or habits that lead to the opposite path away from our goals. The most important starting point in removing the time wasters in life is to know about them. We need to sit down and analyze the activities which take our time.Start by making a list of our activities and sort out the neither urgent nor important ones. Sometimes it could be a simple addiction to a TV Soap Opera, constant distractions, or even one of our core (核心的)activities that we are not excellent at doing. We can, for instance, imagine that we are a business owner and we keep sabotaging our business deals, leading the company into great financial problems. It may be time for us to have our associates do the marketing while we concentrate on the areas we are best in. The next thing would be to make sure that we plan our daily activities. One of the obvious reasons is that we will have an upper hand in fighting against time wasters in our schedule. If what we want to do or what we don't want to do becomes clear, our focus is strengthened. Moreover, when we think of people we spend time with, we are sure to notice that some have a more positive impact on our success while others have a negative one. It is important to be able to distinguish them especially with regard to our schedule. While we do not advocate for everyone to throw away relationships, it is good to know that helping a friend who is emotionally disturbed can wait till dinner time. Finally, do the same to our habits. List all the habits and addictions that take any amount of our time. Then, take a little time to straighten them out in line with their importance and urgency.Depending on our analysis, kill those that are harmful to our goals in life.1、Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. The Importance of Developing Good Habits B , The Significance of Planning Daily Activities C. Ways of Distinguishing People we Spend Time with D. Ways of Removing Time Wasters from Our Lives 2、The underlined word "sabotaging“ in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to . A. promotingB. offeringC. damagingD. striking 3、What do we know about time wasters from the passage?A. They fail to set clear goals for their life.B They arrange things on importance and need.C. They turn away our attention from achieving goals.D. They are addicted to sorting out the important activities.4、Which of the following
