In their educational background, special skills and work experience, there is little, if anything, to choose between half a dozen candidates. How then does the employer make a choice? Usually on the basis of an interview. There are many arguments about the interview as a selection procedure. The main argument against it is that it results in a wholly subjective decision. As often as not, employers do not choosethe best candidate, but the one who makes a good first impression on them. Some employers, of course, reply to this argument by saying that they have become so experienced in interviewing staff that they are able to make a sound assessment of each candidates likely performance. Unfortunately, both for the employers and applicants, there are many people of great ability who simply do not interview well. There are also, of course, people who interview extremely well, but are later found to be very unsatisfactory employees. Those in favour of the interview insist that the well-structured procedure is valid in assessing a candidates ability, an essential guarantee for the future job. They also argue that an employer is concerned not only with a candidates ability, but with the suitability of his or her personality for the particular work situation, Many employers, for example, will overlook occasional inefficiencies from their secretary so long as she has a pleasant personality. Perhaps the real purpose of an interview is not to assess the assessable aspects of each candidate but to make a guess at the more intangible things, such as personality, character and social ability.Today, interview is still the key section of the entire selection procedure, though different employers have different standards for competence. Generally speaking, candidates who interview well tend to be quietly confident, but never boastful; direct and straight-forward in their questions and answers; cheerful and friendly, but never over-familiar; and sincerely enthusiastic and optimistic. Candidates who interview badly tend to be at either end of the spectrum of human behaviour. They are either very shy or over-confident. They show either a lack of enthusiasm or an excess of it. They either talk too little or never stop talking. They are either over-polite or rudely abrupt.1. We can infer from the passage that an employer might tolerate his secretarys occasional mistakes if the latter is_.A. direct B. shy C. cheerful D. competent2. What is the authors attitude towards the interview as a selection procedure?A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned.3. The last paragraph indicates_A. a link between success in interview and personalityB. connections between work abilities and personalityC. differences in interview experienceD. differences in personal behaviour答案与解析:一、短语检测1. in particular 2. on average 3. come off 4. in theory 5. in practice 6. respect/obey the rules 7. live on 8. takefor granted 9. pass by 10. have an effect on 11. volunteer to do sth. 12. call out 13. week in, week out 14. take up 15. be qualified for sth./to do sth. 16. take (no) notice of 17. apply for 18. in response to 19. have a day off 20. be related to 二、选词填空1. in particular 2.live on 3. pass by 4. in response to 5. apply for三、单项选择1. offer sb. some money for sth. 意为“向某人出价买某物”,又由“Shall we take it? take up意为“占据(位置),占用(时间)”;take out意为“带出去,领取”;take on意为“呈现,承担,聘用,接纳”;take off意为“起飞,脱下,休假”。 A、C、D三项都可以表示“拜访”,call on和call at分别要加人和地点名词作宾语,call by则不能加宾语,因此D正确。4. to choose from在此意为to choose one from several models。 We have several models for you to choose from。 5. look up to表示“尊敬”;live up to实践,遵守,不辜负;keep up with跟上;come up with提出(办法)。6. C. take notice of留意,注意到。7. call in召来,请来;call on拜访,号召;call for需要,要求。8. take in吸收,欺骗;take off脱掉,起飞,成名;take on呈现,显现,雇用;take out拿出,取出。 It is required that 意思是“规章制度要求”。 Many employers, for example, will overlook occasional inefficiencies from their secretary so long as she has a pleasant personality. 2. C. Objective 公正的,文章首段引出主题句the employer makes a choice on the basis of an interview.第二段分析“存在的异议”,第三段分析“支持的观点”,最后一段给出现状“Today, interview is still the key section of the entire selection procedure.”
