16、 irreplaceable value and significance in Chinese classics. In recent years, an increasing attention has been given to folklore and mythology, thus the book has gradually attracted the interest of more and more domestic and foreign scholars in the related fields. At home, many consensuses have been r

17、eached with the in-depth study of Shan Hai Jing. At abroad, different translated versions have emerged, among which the English versions account for the majority. Rich in cultural imagery, together with the differences in Chinese and English culture, the translation of Shan Hai Jing will inevitably

18、adopt some compensatory measures to achieve an effective conversion of two languages. Thick Translation, proposed by American scholar K. A. Appiah, is a conception related to cultural transmission theories. It is of great significance to the translation of Shan Hai Jing. Previous studies show that a

19、lthough Appiah proposes the conception of Thick Translation, the implementation of it is still a controversial issue. Appiah himself only gives a general direction and emphasizes that Thick Translation is context-dependent, and the specific methods should be designed by translators. Based on this fa

20、ct, in recent years, many scholars put forward their own classifications of Thick Translation. However, most of the classifications are either incomplement or lack of theoretical support. In light of previous researches, the author firstly introduces the conception of Paratext and the translation st

21、rategies of Realia to put forward a more comprehensive classification of Thick Translation, and that is: Thick Translation presented as paratext like introductory words, graphics, pictures, ect., and Thick Translation presented as text, which can be put in another way 44the translation strategies of

22、 Realia, like caique, transcription, assimilation, formation of a new word, approximate translation and descriptive translation. Based on the classification of Thick Translation, the author then makes a comparative study of Anne BirrelFs version in 1999 and Wang Hong version in 2010, which are the t

23、wo lastest English versions of Shan Hai Jing. The author probes into the similarities and differences between two versions and analyzes the gains and losses of each version. At last, a cause analysis is made to further explore the behind reasons that caused the differences between them. It is found

24、that both Anne Biirell and Wang Hong adopt the method of Thick Translation during the process of interpretation of Shan Hai Jing. However, because of historicity of understanding, prejudice, fusion of horizons and effective history, the two versions exhibit their own characteristics: Birrell tends t

25、o adopt caique, descriptive translation method as well as annotation to show every connotative meaning of images that occurred in Shan Hai Jing, while Wang Hong is more inclined to use transcription and approximate translation method to realize a clear, fluent and concise translation. 26、 Hai Jing; Thick Translation; Paratext; Realia 基于 深度翻译 理论的山海经两个英译本对比研究 内 容 摘 要 山海经作为我国上古时代的一部百科全书，在中国典籍中具有不可替代的 价值和意义。近年来，随着民俗学和神话学的兴起，此书渐渐引起了国内外越来 越多相关领域专家和学者的关注。在国内，山海经的注疏研究越来越深入， 达成了许多共识；在国外，不同译本纷纷涌现，其中以英译本居多。然而，由于 山海经年代久远，文化意象丰富，其翻译就不可避免的要借助一些补偿手段 来实现两种语言的有效转换。美国学者阿皮亚提出的 “深度翻译 是一种与文化 传播有关的概念，其作为

27、文化人类学在翻译研究领域的拓展，对山海经的翻 译具有重要的指导意义。 前人的研究表明，尽管阿皮亚提出了 “深度翻译 ”概念，但其具体实践却是一 个存在争议性的话题。阿皮亚本人只是给出了大体的方向，强调 “深度翻译 是 依赖语境的，让译者自己设计具体的实施方法。近几年，许多学者都做了相关的 分类研究，但大多缺乏理论支撑或者存在分类不全的现象。在前人研究的基础上， 作者首先对 “深度翻译 ”的实施手段做了更为全面而具体的分类，即：以副文本 形式呈现的 “深度翻译 ”策略，如注释、图表、图片等等；和以文本形式呈现的 “深度翻译 ”策略，也就是 Realia 的翻译策略，即仿译、音译、同化、造新词、

28、近似翻译和描述性翻译。 基于对 “深度翻译 ”实施手段的分类，本文然后分析比较了山海经两个最 新的英译本，即比勒尔 1999 年的译本和王宏 2010 年的译本，重点探讨了两个译 本 “深度翻译 ”策略的异同及得失。最后，作者进一步对两个英译本出现差异的 原因进行了探究。研究发现，两个译本均采用 “深度翻译 ”手段对山海经进 行了意义的阐释，但是由于理解的历史性，偏见，视域融合，效果历史等原因， 两个译者在阐释的过程中又呈现出各自的特色：比勒尔倾向于采用仿译，描述性 翻译和加注的方法，给目的语读者呈现出每个意象的内涵；而王宏则更倾向于采 用音译和近似翻译，力求译本的明白、通畅和简洁。 关键词：

29、山海经；深度翻译；副文本 ； Realia Chapter One Introduction 1.1 A Brief Introduction to Shan Hai Jing Shan Hai Jing can be seen as one of the masterpieces in Chinese classics with a unique style, invaluable and encyclopedic record of various beliefs of ancient Chinese. Its rich content covering history, geograph

30、y, ethnology, mythology, religion, zoology, phytology, mineralogy, and medicine, etc. The variety of its subjects and the peculiarity of its contents are unparalleled among Chinese classics. The book is made up of two parts, which is called The Classic of Mountains and The Classic of Seas. The Class

31、ic of Mountains sees the mountains in south, west, north, east and central as the key link, described the ancient history, plants, birds and animals, myth, religion and so on. The Classic of Seas, apart from the description of geographic locations, it also records the different styles of people from

32、 very far countries. The book contains 31,000 words which records more than 100 countries, nearly 3000 names, 447 mountains, more than 300 channels, 204 mythical figures, more than 300 kinds of monsters, 400 species of plants and 100 kinds of metals and minerals. Due to its charming content as well

33、as its great value for the research in other disciplines like medicine, theology, geography ect., the study of it has never been ceased since very early period of China, and at the same time, it arouses more and more interest of foreign scholars abroad. The study of Shan Hai Jing can be dated back t

34、o two thousand years ago in the Western Han Dynasty which led by Liuxiang and his son Liu Xin. Today5s official version of Shan Hai Jing was collated, proofread and completed by a group of collating officers in the first year of the reign of Emperor Aidi of the Han Dynasty (6 B.C.) (Wang, 2010, p. 3

35、6). In the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Guo Pu annotated the book and an eighteen-volume book was completed which named 从洲 /a/ Z/m (山海经注 ） .Later on， other famous researches also did great efforts on the study of Shai Hai Jing like Yang Shen, Wang Chongqing and Liu Huimeng in the Ming Dynasty, Wu Renchen, B

36、i Yuan and Hao Yixing in the Qing Dynasty. After the Qing Dynasty, Gu Jiegang and Tan Qixiang made great contributions to the study of Shan Hai Jing. In the 20th century, with the deepening study of Shan Hai Jing, a group of scholars5 monograph has been published and various research methods have sh

37、own to us which can be roughly divided into two major categories: one is the category of literature like CW/a ” (山海经校注 ） written by Yuan Ke; and the other one is the category of archaeology like Chinese Ancient Religion and Myth (中国古代宗 教与神话考 ） collated by Din Shan.
