3、emocratsandRepublicanssentletterstotheAmericanAcademyofArtsandSciencesaskingthatitidentifyactionsthatcouldbetakenbyfederal,stateandlocalgovernments,universities,foundations,educators,individualbenefactorsandotherstomaintainnationalexcellenceinhumanitiesandsocialscientificscholarshipandeducation.Inre

4、sponse,theAmericanAcademyformedtheCommissionontheHumanitiesandSocialSciences,withDukeUniversityPresidentRichardBrodheadandretiredExelonCEOJohnRoweasco-chairmen.Amongthecommissions51membersaretop-tier-universitypresidents,scholars,lawyers,judges,andbusinessexecutives,aswellasprominentfiguresfromdiplo

5、macy,filmmaking,musicandjournalism.Thegoalsidentifiedinthereportaregenerallyadmirable.Becauserepresentativegovernmentpresupposesaninformedcitizenry,thereportsupportsfullliteracy;stressesthestudyofhistoryandgovernment,particularlyAmericanhistoryandAmericangovernment;andencouragestheuseofnewdigitaltec

6、hnologies.Toencourageinnovationandcompetition,thereportcallsforincreasedinvestmentinresearch,thecraftingofcoherentcurriculathatimprovestudentsabilitytosolveproblemsandcommunicateeffectivelyinthe21stcentury,increasedfundingforteachersandtheencouragementofscholarstobringtheirlearningtobearonthegreatch

7、allengesoftheday.Thereportalsoadvocatesgreaterstudyofforeignlanguages,internationalaffairsandtheexpansionofstudyabroadprograms.OneofthemorenovelideasinthereportisthecreationofaorderviagraCultureCorpsincitiesandtownacrossAmericatotransmithumanisticandsocialscientificexpertisefromonegenerationtothenex

8、t.Unfortunately,despite2yearsinthemaking,TheHeartoftheMatternevergetstotheheartofthematter:theilliberalnatureofliberaleducationatourleadingcollegesanduniversities.ThecommissionignoresthatforseveraldecadesAmericascollegesanduniversitieshaveproducedgraduateswhodontknowthecontentandcharacterofliberaled

9、ucationandarethusdeprivedofitsbenefits.Sadly,thespiritofinquiryonceathomeoncampushasbeenreplacedbytheuseofthehumanitiesandsocialsciencesasvehiclesfordisseminatingprogressive,orleft-liberalpropaganda.WeknowfromtheextensivedocumentationthatWilliamF.BuckleyJr.providedinhisstellarcritiqueofAmericanacade

10、mia,GodandManatYale,firstpublishedin1951,thatthispropagandizingextendsbackatleasttothemiddleofthe20thcentury.Today,professorsroutinelytreattheprogressiveinterpretationofhistoryandprogressivepublicpolicyasthepropersubjectofstudywhileportrayingconservativeorclassicalliberalideassuchasfreemarkets,self-

11、relianceandadistrustofcentralplanningasfallingoutsidetheboundariesofroutine,andsometimeslegitimate,intellectualinvestigation.Meanwhile,coursesproliferateonhighlyspecializedtopicsMuslimsinmovies,gayandlesbiangardeners,themathematicalformalizationofpoliticaldecisionmaking,forexamplethatcloselycorrespo

12、ndtoprofessorsnicheresearchinterestsbutcontributelittletostudentsgraspofthebroadsweepofWesterncivilizationanditsliterary,philosophicalandreligiousmasterpieces.Throughspeechcodes,endlessseminarsandworkshopsdesignedtoteachstudentshowtoavoidoffensivespeechandbyhandlingsexualharassmentandsexual-assaulta
