12、ailedthemountain,Igesaid.Inthespiritofcompromise,theastronomycommunityisalreadychangingitsuseofMaunaKea.TheTMTsitewaschosentominimizethetelescopesvisibilityaroundtheislandandtoavoidarchaeologicalandenvironmentalimpact,andtheTMTwillpayanadditional$1millionannuallytoleasethelandonwhichitresides,with80

13、percentofthosefundsgoingtostewardshipofthemountain.TolimitthenumberoftelescopesonMaunaKeainthefuture,Igesplancallsfor25percentoftelescopescurrentlytheretoberemovedbeforeTMTbeginsoperations,andthosesitesreturnedtoanaturalstate.Noteveryonewillbehappywithhisplan,butitisagoodsteptowardachievingharmonyon

14、MaunaKea.ThereisnoreasonwhyeveryoneHawaiianandnon-HawaiianalikecannotbewelcomedonMaunaKeatoembracetheirculturalheritageandtostudythestars.HoldingtheTMTorothertelescopeshostagewillnotremedypastinjusticessufferedbytheHawaiianpeople,asmuchasweagreethereisworkonthisfrontthatremainstobedone.Theworldcannotstandstill,QueenLiliuokalanisaid.Wemusteitheradvanceorrecede.
