On the Road, a masterpiece of Kerouac, is the most important novel of the Beat Generation literature. Dean is the main charact
3、er in On the Road, and his prototype in reality is Neal Cassady. Besides, Kerouac, the writer himself is the prototype of Sal Paradise in the book, and Allen Ginsberg is the prototype of Carlo Marx. Dean is a typical person in On the Road and in even the whole Beat Generation. He is a devil as well
4、as an angel. For the evil side, he is a drug addict, a tippler 酒鬼, a thief, a reprobate(恶棍) , a mad man, and he will do anything which violates the law. For the angel side,he is a kind, vigorous, determined and charming gentle man. Everyone likes him, and everyone is crazy about him. The author Kero
5、uac admits that, Dean, th“emad”man is the only clear-headed person at that age. The Beat Generation which is represented by Dean, has it s special social and cultural backgrounds. This thesis aims at helping readers appreciate this debatablegeneration by analyzing Deans role and his character. I am goin

And to get some useful conclusions by associating it with modern society.Chapter Two An Introduction to On the Road2.1 The Main Story of On the RoadOn the Road is an autobiographical fiction by Jack Kerouac. It is a Story
15、 about two restless young men in the late 1940s who cross and recross America, searching for parties, girls, drugs, loneliness and their own dreams along the way. This book can be divided into five parts and every part is a journey experience. At the first part, Dean Moriarty stops Sal Paradises sta
16、ble life when they first meet in New York, 1947. At that time, Dean just escapes from a jail and newly married. He comes to New York, meets a group of young writers and makes friends with them. Among his friends, youcan see the young writer Sal Paradise and the poet Carlo Marx. Dean likes these guys
17、, and so do they. Their relationship becomes closer by years of restless journeys back and forth across the America. With a combination of all kinds of adventures and escapades, Sal sometimes goes to west to join Dean and more friends in Denver, and sometimes goes west by himself. He works as a fiel
18、dworker in California for a while, within that time lives with a married Mexico girl, Terry, they meet on the way to California. 19、, it happens in 1948, when Deans life is in a miserable chaos, he drops his pregnant wife Camille at home alone and brings his ex-wife Marylou to east to find Sal again. 20、s to Dean, and then Dean settles in New York for a while.At the third part, it happens in the spring of 1949, Sal goes to Denver alone, but Dean soon joins him. They travel across the American continent and back to west. Sal knows better about Dean and his girls after the travel, and their friendshi
21、p comes to a higher place.At the fourth part, they go south to Mexico City, the terminal place of their journey.Dean plans to get a cheap divorce papers there with his second wife Camille. In Mexico they go sightseeing in the car and repeat the same crazy behavior as they are in America. They make f

They spend a happy time in Mexico, but Sal get a strong feverin the last few days in Mexico, Dean can not wait to break up with Camille and to get

So Dean leaves the sick Sal and Stain in Mexico, drives home alone.At the last of the book, because a letter of Sal, Dean cannot help to missing Sal, so Dean stops his plan, comes to east immediately, to see Sal and Ssagl irlfriend. He just spends three days with Sal, he even doe
24、s not know why he comes here except seeing Sal, then he backs to west by five days of train. At last he comes to New York again.But he fails to ask Sal and his friend to join his journey, so the old, lonely and sad Dean travels alone this time. In reality, Cassady, the prototype of Dean is died at h

He thinks himself is the most important, everything must cater to himself first.3.1.3 Hypocrisy and Inde
44、centHe is indecent in his personal life, and he is dishonest and untruth, the author writes“he was only conning because he wanted so much to live and to get involved with people who would otherwise pay no attention to him, I knew he was conning me, and he knew I knew, this has been the basis of our
