Did your parents throw it away? Well, I know where it is. Its floating in the Pacific Ocean in a place called the North Pacific Gyr
2、e. How did it get there? Well, let me explain.Many countries around the Pacific dump their garbage in the ocean. Most of the garbage sinks to the bottom. But plastic floats-just like the plastic duck in your bathtub. However, unlike water in a bathtub, the water in the Pacific Ocean moves. It moves
3、in a clockwise motion and this spinning motion, called a gyre, pulls things toward the middle. So, all the plastic ends up in the same place. One scientist says the area looks just like “plastic soup”.This phenomenon of spinning plastic soup was discovered about ten years ago. Since that time the am
4、ount of plastic in this area has increased tenfold. And this plastic will not just go away: it takes 400 years for plastic to degrade! And, even worse, fish and sea birds are eating the plastic. They think it looks like food. The plastic doesnt poison them but the fish (who are not smart!) think the
5、ir bellies are full. So, they stop eating and die of starvation. Dolphins and whales will also eat plastic and die.Governments are starting to work together to clean up this area but it will take many years. Even now, as the days grow shorter and colder, he continues to ride Jet. “I will ride my horse even in the coldest weather,” he says.Burch says the first time he sat on a ho
