1、Microlaunchercompetition:firstpayloadwinnerschosenThesatellitemarketisthrivingandsatellitesthemselvesarebecomingeversmallerandlighter.Around90percentofthesatellitesthatwillbelaunchedintospaceoverthenextdecadeweighlessthan500kilograms,whichputstheminthesmallsatellitecategory.Theyspanawiderangeofappli

2、cations,fromtelecommunicationservicesandmonitoringofEarthsland,airandwatermassesallthewaythroughtotherapidandcost-effectivetestingofnewtechnologiesinspace.Microlaunchersarenowabletocarrythesesmallsatellitestotheirtargetorbit.Againstthisgeneralbackdrop,theGermanSpaceAgencyatDLRlauncheditsmicrolaunche

3、rcompetitionin2020,withthespecificaimofpromotingaccesstospaceviacommerciallydevelopedsmalllaunchvehicles.TheGermanSpaceAgencyatDLRisprovidingatotalof25millioneurosinfundingfromtheGermanFederalMinistryforEconomicAffairsandEnergytodevelopinnovativemicrolaunchers,whileatthesametimesecuringpayloadcapaci

4、tyonthefirsttwoflightsforthewinnersfrombothmainrounds.ItwillbeimplementedaspartoftheGermancontributiontowardstheESAsnewcommercialspacetransportserviceprogramme(C-STS).GermanysignedontotheC-STSprogrammeasaleadingplayerintheefforttoinitiatecommercialisationwithinthelaunchersectorinEurope.IsarAerospace

5、TechnologiesGmbHaMunich-basedstart-upwonthefirstmainroundofthemicrolaunchercompetitionwithSpectrum,itssmalllaunchvehicle,inApril2021.Spectrumissettomakeitsmaidenflightinlate2022.Inautumn2021,theGermanSpaceAgencyatDLRthenwentontolaunchanothercontesttofindsuitablepayloads.FiveEuropeanresearchinstituti

6、onswonafreeflightonSpectrumfortheirsevensmallsatellites.Theywillusethelaunchtoconductscientificinvestigationsandtestnewtechnologiesinspace.OverviewofthewinnersfromthefirstPayloadcompetition:TheDLRResponsiveSpaceClusterCompentenceCenter(RSC),basedattheAeroSpaceParkonDLRsTrauensiteinLowerSaxony,withit

7、sMSAE-OTTERSmission,wheretheprimaryaimistodevelopandlaunchasmallsatelliteinthespaceofjustninemonths.Thisrequiresstandarddevelopmentandpreparationprocessestobeacceleratedconsiderably,whichshouldbenefitsatellitedevelopmentinfuture.AtechnologydemonstrationisbeingcarriedoutaspartoftheCyBEEsatmission(Cyb

8、ersecurityBerlinExperimentalandEducationalSatellite)fromtheChairofSpaceTechnologyattheBerlinInstituteofTechnology(TechnischeUniversittBerlin).TheCubeSathasaminiaturisedtransceiverfornewlydefinedfrequencybandsthatcanbeusedforshort-termmissions,aswellasnovel,radiation-tolerantsolarcellsfromtheUniversi

9、tyofPotsdam.ZfTZentrumfrTelematike.V.fromWrzburgwithascientificstudyofvolcanicashcloudsandthreesmallsatellitesthatflyinformationtomeasurethespatialextentofsuchphenomena.TheNorwegianUniversityofScienceandTechnology(NTNU)inTrondheimwiththeFRAMSat-1mission,atechnologydemonstrationforasmallsatellitedeve

10、lopedbyastudent,equippedwithanewstarsensorfromaNorwegianSME.TheUniversityofMaribor(Slovenia)withitsTRISAT-Smission,atechnologydemonstratorforaminiaturisedtransceiverdesignedtoenableencryptedcommunicationswithmultiplegroundstationsallovertheglobe.WaltherPelzer,DLRExecutiveBoardMemberandHeadoftheGerma

11、nSpaceAgencyatDLR,congratulatesallofthewinnersandwishesthemandIsarAerospaceasuccessfullaunchwithSpectrumandafruitfulmission:Iamdelightedthatourinitiativehaspromptedanarrayofspaceactivitiesandsupportedthedevelopmentoftransportcapacityinspace,thedevelopmentofsmallsatellitesforscientificmissionsandthet

12、estingofnewtechnologies.Closecollaborationbetweenuniversities,researchinstitutions,smallbusinessesandstart-upsisinlinewiththeGermangovernmentsspacestrategy.WeseethesecontestsasacatalystforthecommercialisationofspaceactivitiesinGermanyandEuropeasawhole.IsarAerospaceGmbHwillconcludecooperationagreemen

13、tswiththewinnersofthefirstPayloadContestoverthecomingdays.WearedelightedtoannouncetheselectionofpayloadsforSpectrumsmaidenflightandwouldliketothanktheGermanSpaceAgencyatDLRandthevariousinstitutionsforbelievinginus.Itiswonderfultobeapartofthisforward-lookingprogrammeanddoourbittofostercollaborationbe

14、tweenthepublicandprivatesectorinEuropeanspacetravel.ThiscollaborationwillalsohelptopromotethedevelopmentofresearchandtechnologyforspaceandcultivatetheprivatespaceecosysteminEurope,saysIsarCEODanielMetzler.Therearecurrently12applicationsinforSpectrumssecondplanneddemonstrationflight.Thewinningentrieswillbechosennextyear.Wewillrunanotherpayloadcompetitionthen,aswell,saysMarkusWagener,ManageroftheSmallSatellitesProgrammefortheGermanSpaceAgencyatDLR.“ThesecondroundofwinnersofthemicrolaunchercompetitionwillbechoseninApril2022.Wewanttoofferfreeridesonthelaunchersfirstandsecondflights.
