38、and,certainly,imnottryingtodiminishtheimpact,theweight,ofapersonsstruggle.thereisadversityandchallengeinlife,anditsallveryrealandrelativetoeverysingleperson,butthequestionisntwhetherornotyouregoingtomeetadversity,buthowyouregoingtomeetit.so,ourresponsibilityisnotsimplyshieldingthosewecareforfromadve

39、rsity,butpreparingthemtomeetitwell.andwedoadisservicetoourkidswhenwemakethemfeelthattheyrenotequippedtoadapt.theresanimportantdifferenceanddistinctionbetweentheobjectivemedicalfactofmybeinganamputeeandthesubjectivesocietalopinionofwhetherornotimdisabled.and,truthfully,theonlyrealandconsistentdisabil

40、ityivehadtoconfrontistheworldeverthinkingthaticouldbedescribedbythosedefinitions.inourdesiretoprotectthosewecareaboutbygivingthemthecold,hardtruthabouttheirmedicalprognosis,or,indeed,aprognosisonthee_pectedqualityoftheirlife,wehavetomakesurethatwedontputthefirstbrickinawallthatwillactuallydisablesom

41、eone.perhapsthee_istingmodelofonlylookingatwhatisbrokeninyouandhowdowefi_it,servestobemoredisablingtotheindividualthanthepathologyitself.bynottreatingthewholenessofaperson,bynotacknowledgingtheirpotency,wearecreatinganotherillontopofwhatevernaturalstruggletheymighthave.weareeffectivelygradingsomeone

42、sworthtoourcommunity.soweneedtoseethroughthepathologyandintotherangeofhumancapability.and,mostimportantly,theresapartnershipbetweenthoseperceiveddeficienciesandourgreatestcreativeability.soitsnotaboutdevaluing,ornegating,thesemoretryingtimesassomethingwewanttoavoidorsweepundertherug,butinsteadtofind

43、thoseopportunitieswrappedintheadversity.somaybetheideaiwanttoputoutthereisnotsomuchovercomingadversityasitisopeningourselvesuptoit,embracingit,grapplingwithit,touseawrestlingterm,maybeevendancingwithit.and,perhaps,ifweseeadversityasnatural,consistentanduseful,werelessburdenedbythepresenceofit.thisye

44、arwecelebratethe200thbirthdayofcharlesdarwin,anditwas150yearsago,whenwritingaboutevolution,thatdarwinillustrated,ithink,atruthaboutthehumancharacter.toparaphrase:itsnotthestrongestofthespeciesthatsurvives,norisitthemostintelligentthatsurvives;itistheonethatismostadaptabletochange.conflictisthegenesi

45、sofcreation.fromdarwinswork,amongstothers,wecanrecognizethatthehumanabilitytosurviveandflourishisdrivenbythestruggleofthehumanspiritthroughconflictintotransformation.so,again,transformation,adaptation,isourgreatesthumanskill.and,perhaps,untilweretested,wedontknowwhatweremadeof.maybethatswhatadversit
