3、yspeciessurvived.AfewmanagedtomigrateintotheAtlantic.Somewhatlater,themigrantsreturned,bringingnewspecieswiththem.Whydidthenearextinctionandmigrationsoccur?AnothertaskfortheGlomarChallengersscientistswastotrytodeterminetheoriginofthedomelikemassesburieddeepbeneaththeMediterraneanseafloor.Thesestruct
4、ureshadbeendetectedyearsearlierbyecho-soundinginstruments,buttheyhadneverbeenpenetratedinthecourseofdrilling.WeretheysaltdomessuchasarecommonalongtheUnitedStatesGulfCoast,andifso,whyshouldtherehavebeensomuchsolidcrystallinesaltbeneaththeflooroftheMediterranean?Withquestionsuchastheseclearlybeforethe
5、m,thescientistsaboardtheGlomarChallengerprocessedtotheMediterraneantosearchfortheanswers.OnAugust23,1970,theyrecoveredasample.Thesampleconsistedofpebblesofhardenedsedimentthathadoncebeensoft,deep-seamud,aswellasgranulesofgypsumandfragmentsofvolcanicrock.Notasinglepebblewasfoundthatmighthaveindicated
6、thatthepebblescamefromthenearbycontinent.Inthedaysfollowing,samplesofsolidgypsumwererepeatedlybroughtondeckasdrillingoperationspenetratedtheseafloor.Furthermore,thegypsumwasfoundtopossesspeculiaritiesofcompositionandstructurethatsuggestedithadformedondesertflats.Sedimentaboveandbelowthegypsumlayerco
7、ntainedtinymarinefossils,indicatingopen-oceanconditions.AstheydrilledintothecentralanddeepestpartoftheMediterraneanbasin,thescientiststooksolid,shiny,crystallinesaltfromthecorebarrel.Interbeddedwiththesaltwerethinlayersofwhatappearedtobewindblownsilt.Thetimehadcometoformulateahypothesis.Theinvestiga
8、torstheorizedthatabout20millionyearsago,theMediterraneanwasabroadseawaylinkedtotheAtlanticbytwonarrowstraits.Crustalmovementsclosedthestraits,andthelandlockedMediterraneanbegantoevaporate.Increasingsalinitycausedbytheevaporationresultedintheexterminationofscoresofinvertebratespecies.Onlyafeworganism
9、sespeciallytolerantofverysaltyconditionsremained.Asevaporationcontinued,theremainingbrine(saltwater)becamesodensethatthecalciumsulfateofthehardlayerwasprecipitated.Inthecentraldeeperpartofthebasin,thelastofthebrineevaporatedtoprecipitatemoresolublesodiumchloride(salt).Later,undertheweightofoverlying
10、sediments,thissaltflowedplasticallyupwardtoformsaltdomes.Beforethishappened,however,theMediterraneanwasavastdesert3,000metersdeep.Then,about5.5millionyearsagocamethedeluge.Asaresultofcrustaladjustmentsandfaulting,theStraitofGibraltar,wheretheMediterraneannowconnectstotheAtlantic,opened,andwatercasca
11、dedspectacularlybackintotheMediterranean.Turbulentwaterstoreintothehardenedsaltflats,brokethemup,andgroundthemintothepebblesobservedinthefirstsampletakenbytheChallenger.Asthebasinwasrefilled,normalmarineorganismsreturned.Soonlayerofoceanicoozebegantoaccumulateabovetheoldhardlayer.Thesaltandgypsum,th
