5、aycloseattentiontothevoicesofArabwomenandtheirplight.Butratherthanconfiningthestoryofwomentoanissueofreligionorculture,itisimportantthattheworlduseswhatishappeningtothemasabarometerofthetrajectorythatindividualsocietiesareon.Afterall,howacountryoraregiontreatsitswomeninmanywaystellsthestoryofthefutu

6、repoliticaldirectionofthatcountry.Thetroubleisthatthistrajectoryisintoomanycasesnotparticularlyencouraging.IntheArabSpringsaftermath,therehavebeenplanstolowerthelegalmarriageage,supportexpressedforpolygamyafteryearsofbeingregulated,restrictionsonwomensmobilityandpoliticalparticipation,amassiveincrea

7、seinsexualharassmentandassaultonthestreetswithpolicefailingtointervene,andtheuseofvirginitytestsonwomenarrestedforparticipatinginademonstration,asseeninEgypt.Butyoungwomennowarenotwillingtobackawayfromtheirdemands,andtheyarespeakingoutinspiteofpublicharassment.Andwhilemanywomenhavebeenbeatenandimpri

8、sonedformakingtheirvoicesheard,theyhavecrossedwhatisoftendescribedasthelineoffear.Indoingso,theirmessagetotheoldergenerationoffeministsisthattherightsofwomenmustbeincludedinthecivilrightsdiscussionofsocietiesmorebroadly.Thehopeisthatthevoiceofwomenmightalsohavemoreinfluenceonthedirectionofpolicyinth
