7、sityruralareasactuallyhaw,ahigherriskofdyingaviolentdeathdefinedasafatalcarcrashorhomicidebysomeoneotherthanaspouse,relativeorfriendthanpersonswholiveinacity.ProfessorAlfredBlumstein,acriminologistatCarnegieMellonUniversity,calledthestudyintriguingbutsaiditdidnotconvincehimthaturbanresidentsshouldfe

8、elsaferthanthoseinruralareas.Ingeneral,homicideratesarehigherinthecitythanthesuburbsandthesuburbsarehigherthanruralareas,hesaid.From1997to1999,Lucyfound,thecityofPittsburgh'shomicideratewas1.3per10,000persons,comparedwith0.3per10,000personsinBeaverandFayettecountiesand0.2inWashington,Westmorelan

9、d,ButlerandtherestofAlleghenyCounty.liethenrefinedthenumberstoisolatethehomicidesthatwerecommittedbypersonswhodidn'tknowthevictims.Forthesametimeperiod,Lucyevaluatedtheriskofdyinginafatalcarcrashwhichhefoundwas2per10,000personsinFayetteCounty,1.4per10,000inButler,1.2inWashingtonandWestmorelandan

10、d1inBeaver.InAlleghenyCountyoutsidePittsburgh,theriskwas0.6per10,000;Pittsburgh'sratewas0.7per10,000persons.Ineachmetropolitanareathathestudied,LucyfoundthatthesafestcountieswerethosethatborderedorrimmedthecentralcityBaltimoreCount)',CookCountyinChicago,DelawareandMontgomerycountiesbordering

11、PhiladelphiaandAlleghenyCountysurroundingPittsburgh.Hisstudysupportsthepremisethatpeopletendtooverestimatetherisksofcrimewhileunderestimatingtherisksofdriving.Fouryearsago,thePostGazettecametoasimilarconclusioninastudythatfoundthatresidentsofFayetteandGreenecountiesweremorethantwiceaslikelytodieavio

12、lentdeathasresidentsofAlleghenyCounty.Thatstudywasbasedonananalysisofnearly25,000deathsinPennsylvaniaduringa10-yearperiod.Itfoundthatthesinglefactorthatincreasedthechanceofviolentdeathswascars.Noplaceisperfectlysafe,butsomeplacesaremoredangerousthanothers.WhetherweliveonafloodplainorinTornadoAlley,n

13、earanuclearfacilityorinaneighborhoodpoorlylitatnight,weallco-existuneasilywithnaturalandman-madehazards.AsMarkMonmoniershowsinhisentertainingandimmenselyinformativebookCartographiesofDanger:MappingHazardsinAmerica,mapscantellusalotaboutwherewecananticipatecertainhazards,buttheycanalsobedangerouslymi

14、sleading.California,forexample,takesearthquakesseriously,withacomprehensiveprogramofseismicmapping,whereasWashingtonhasbeencomparativelylaxaboutearthquakesinPugetSound.ButastheNorthridgeearthquakeinJanuary1994demonstratedalltooclearlytoCalifornians,evenreliableseismichazardmapscandeceiveanyonewhomis

15、interpretsknownfault-linesastheonlyplacesvulnerabletoearthquakes.Importantasitistopredictandprepareforcatastrophicnaturalhazards,moresubtleandpersistentphenomenasuchaspollutionandcrimealsoposeseriousdangersthatwehavetocopewithonadailybasis.Hazard-zonemapshighlightthesemoreinsidioushazardsandraiseawa
