1、Unit 1 Women of achievement(第一单元教学内容分析) Unit 1 Women of achievement The analysis of the teaching contents This unit is concerned with succeful women,which is a sister unit to “Nelson Mandelaa Modern Hero(Unit 5,Module 1)”.It introduces to the students six women who have played an important role in d

2、ifferent times and in different countries,focusing on Jane Goodall,a British lady devoting herself to studying and protecting chimps in African forests,and Lin Qiaozhi,a Chinese specialist in womens diseases.According to their stories,all of them devoted themselves to their chosen careers and stuck

3、to their ideas.To achieve their ambitions,they had to overcome various and different problems.At times they had to give up things that most people take for granted.For example,Jane Goodall gave up the opportunity of entering university while Lin Qiaozhi remained single all her life.This is to explai

4、n the criteria of judging a great woman and what to learn from them and to enable the students to follow their examples to perfect themselves.WARMING UP This section provides some brief introduction to the six great women in history both at home and abroad.The students are required to get as much in

5、formation as poible about the women and discu what they did,what problems they had to overcome and what they had to give up to fulfill their ambitions in cla.After the discuion,they should come to a conclusion about the criteria of judging a great woman,which can help them to form the right outlook

6、on life and set in proper and equal judgment on others,especially on women.PRE-READING Before the Reading,the students are asked two questions about Jane Goodall:Why do you think Jane Goodall went to Africa to study chimps rather than to a university?Do you think her work is important?Why?The first

7、question may interest the students greatly because one of the most interesting things about Jane Goodall is that she decided to go to the forest to study chimps instead of going to university.This might help the students think about their future plans and how to achieve them.They are encouraged to d

8、iscu and exchange their knowledge so as to have a more comprehensive understanding.READING This is a key and interesting part of the unit because it introduces a day of Jane Goodall and her colleagues in the forests,observing the chimps.After reading the paage the students can know about Jane Goodal

9、ls working methods,her great achievements and her attitude towards wild animals.In order to get the students to concentrate on the ideas of the reading paage,the teacher should help them study the text and find out the meaning of any word or phrase they are unsure of before the leon.The advantage of

10、 this is that the students will be prepared for the problems they have,and thus the students will form a good habit of autonomous learning and improve their ability of autonomous reading. Reading this paage is a good chance for the students to improve their reading ability.So the students are encour

11、aged to glance the title to predict the main plot of the whole story,to skim the paage to get the main idea,and then to scan the paage to get the details.And this paage is also a good piece of reading material for the students to practice writing and speaking.So the students will be given a writing

12、task and a speaking task to complete. Task 1:Suppose you were Jane Goodall or her colleagues,tell the day you would spend in the forest.Try to describe what you think. Task 2:Have a debate between the boys and the girls:Women are (not) able to do more than the men. COMPREHENDING This section deals w

13、ith the understanding of the reading.The answers to the questions cannot always be found straight away in the text,e.g.No.4.of Exercise 1.The students will need to be able to understand the reading paage and work out the answers from what they read.This is called inferential comprehension and is imp

14、ortant in developing the understanding of what they read. In order to understand the reading paage better,the students are expected to work in pairs or in groups.They will work out the answers cooperatively,and then one from each group will report their answers to the cla. LEARNING ABOUT LANGUAGEIn

15、this part some exercises are designed to help the students learn how to use some useful words and phrases from the reading paage.Also they are to work out the verb or noun forms of some words,which will help them to get some knowledge on word formation.The students should be asked to do them individ

16、ually first,and then check the answers with their partners.The purpose is to have the students learn from each other and help each other and share their succe together. The grammar item in this unit is the Subject-verb Agreement.Some rules of which are quite familiar to them.The students are expecte

17、d to stimulate their memory of the learned rules and to master the new ones especially when the subject is a collective noun.The students are first required to sum up some of the rules that they have learned.They should think of the situations where single or plural verbs should be used.This is to g

18、et the students to learn to sum up and sort out the knowledge and then they will try to sum up other rules with the help of the teacher.To consolidate the knowledge about the grammar item,they will finish exercises in Discovering Useful Structures on Page 5 and in Using Structures on Pages 43 and 44

19、.USING LANGUAGEReading The reading paage tells a story about how a student decides his major at university after his research on Lin Qiaozhi(who was the first woman doctor to specialize in gynaecology and obstetrics,or womens illne and the problems of having babies).After reading the paage,the stude

20、nt can learn about a great woman in China Lin Qiaozhi and might be greatly impreed by her good nature and her achievements.At the same time the paage can help the students improve their integrating skills such as describing a person,which will be of great use for the writing part. Like the writer of

21、 the paage,they may have no clear idea about what to do in the future so instructions about future major and career choices are of neceity.Listening The listening material is about the particular problems women have when they want a career of their own.These are problems that men do not have and so

22、it is important that both men and women should be aware that they exist so that more efforts can be devoted to improving equality. The purpose of this listening exercise is to get the gist and some detailed information of a story.So some listening strategies should be introduced to the students. 1)I

23、t is not neceary to understand every word.2)Before listening to the tape,read the questions that follow it and gue what the correct answers are. 3)Ignore what they dont understand and concentrate on what they do. 4)Pay attention to the topic sentences.For example,in this listening material,there is

24、a topic sentence at the beginning of each paragraph.If the students catch the topic sentences,it will be easy for them to understand the whole paage,to get to know the problems women faced and to get the information needed.5)Finally,enjoy the listening paage!Speaking The purpose of this exercise is

25、to encourage the students to think of impreive women around them who are prepared to do their best for others needing their care and then describe them to their clamates.They are to describe their appearances,characters,qualities and their achievements.There are some useful adjectives given in the S

26、tudents Book on Page 7.The students can use them to describe them.The teacher will give some more adjectives for reference.The students are expected to work with their partners telling her/ his partners about the special woman around her/him.They should organize their thoughts and write down some ke

27、y points,and then try to talk to each other.And the partners should note the good and the bad of the description and give some suggestions for improvement.In the end,some students will be chosen to set examples.After their description,the other students should try to gue who the women described are.

28、Writing The purpose of the writing is to get the students to describe a person,especially a woman.In the previous period the student has had a speaking activity with their partners.So they can take advantage of their notes about the appearances,characters,qualities and the achievements of their chos

29、en woman. Here are some teaching suggestions for you to consider:First,get the students to write an outline of the organization of the whole paage and claify the information they have about the women to describe,deciding which information is needed for the description of the appearances,which is for

30、 quality and which is for achievements. Second,get the students to write down some key sentences,paying attention to the tenses and voices. Third,ask the students to work on their first draft.When they finish,ask them to swap with their partners and get some advice from him/her.After that,ask them t

31、o write a second draft which includes their partners suggestions. Finally,show as many written paages as poible using the projector in cla,and make comments on them.Aement This part is a summary of this unit.It may help the students to know whether they have mastered the main points or not.If time p
