1、Unit 1 Women of achievement(第一单元教学内容分析) Unit 1 Women of achievement The analysis of the teaching contents This unit is concerned with succeful women,which is a sister unit to “Nelson Mandelaa Modern Hero(Unit 5,Module 1)”.It introduces to the students six women who have played an important role in d
2、ifferent times and in different countries,focusing on Jane Goodall,a British lady devoting herself to studying and protecting chimps in African forests,and Lin Qiaozhi,a Chinese specialist in womens diseases.According to their stories,all of them devoted themselves to their chosen careers and stuck
3、to their ideas.To achieve their ambitions,they had to overcome various and different problems.At times they had to give up things that most people take for granted.For example,Jane Goodall gave up the opportunity of entering university while Lin Qiaozhi remained single all her life.This is to explai
4、n the criteria of judging a great woman and what to learn from them and to enable the students to follow their examples to perfect themselves.WARMING UP This section provides some brief introduction to the six great women in history both at home and abroad.The students are required to get as much in
5、formation as poible about the women and discu what they did,what problems they had to overcome and what they had to give up to fulfill their ambitions in cla.After the discuion,they should come to a conclusion about the criteria of judging a great woman,which can help them to form the right outlook
6、on life and set in proper and equal judgment on others,especially on women.PRE-READING Before the Reading,the students are asked two questions about Jane Goodall:Why do you think Jane Goodall went to Africa to study chimps rather than to a university?Do you think her work is important?Why?The first
7、question may interest the students greatly because one of the most interesting things about Jane Goodall is that she decided to go to the forest to study chimps instead of going to university.This might help the students think about their future plans and how to achieve them.They are encouraged to d
8、iscu and exchange their knowledge so as to have a more comprehensive understanding.READING This is a key and interesting part of the unit because it introduces a day of Jane Goodall and her colleagues in the forests,observing the chimps.After reading the paage the students can know about Jane Goodal
9、ls working methods,her great achievements and her attitude towards wild animals.In order to get the students to concentrate on the ideas of the reading paage,the teacher should help them study the text and find out the meaning of any word or phrase they are unsure of before the leon.The advantage of
10、 this is that the students will be prepared for the problems they have,and thus the students will form a good habit of autonomous learning and improve their ability of autonomous reading. Reading this paage is a good chance for the students to improve their reading ability.So the students are encour
11、aged to glance the title to predict the main plot of the whole story,to skim the paage to get the main idea,and then to scan the paage to get the details.And this paage is also a good piece of reading material for the students to practice writing and speaking.So the students will be given a writing
12、task and a speaking task to complete. Task 1:Suppose you were Jane Goodall or her colleagues,tell the day you would spend in the forest.Try to describe what you think. Task 2:Have a debate between the boys and the girls:Women are (not) able to do more than the men. COMPREHENDING This section deals w
13、ith the understanding of the reading.The answers to the questions cannot always be found straight away in the text,e.g.No.4.of Exercise 1.The students will need to be able to understand the reading paage and work out the answers from what they read.This is called inferential comprehension and is imp
14、ortant in developing the understanding of what they read. In order to understand the reading paage better,the students are expected to work in pairs or in groups.They will work out the answers cooperatively,and then one from each group will report their answers to the cla. LEARNING ABOUT LANGUAGEIn
15、this part some exercises are designed to help the students learn how to use some useful words and phrases from the reading paage.Also they are to work out the verb or noun forms of some words,which will help them to get some knowledge on word formation.The students should be asked to do them individ
16、ually first,and then check the answers with their partners.The purpose is to have the students learn from each other and help each other and share their succe together. The grammar item in this unit is the Subject-verb Agreement.Some rules of which are quite familiar to them.The students are expecte
