Of course, the relationship between self-esteem and achievement can be circular. Some argue that the best way to build self-esteem is to tell people

31、 at every turn how nice, smart and talented they are. That is probably a bad idea if you think that self-esteem and recognition should be the result of accomplishment; you feel good about yourself, in part, because you have done something well. On the other hand, it is hard to imagine people taking

32、the first step without first having some basic notion of self-confidence. On Wall Street, though, a rising tide lifts many boats and vice versa, which means that there are many people who succeed-or fail-through no merit or fault of their own. This observation might ease a sense of personal responsi

33、bility for the economic crisis, but it was of little comfort to my patients. I think this is because for many of them, the previously expanding market gave them a sense of power along with something as strong as a drug-thrill. The human brain is acutely attuned(使相合) to rewards like money, sex and dr

34、ugs. It turns out that the way a reward is delivered has an enormous impact on its strength. Unpredictable rewards produce much larger signals in the brains reward circuit than anticipated ones. Your reaction to situations that are either better or worse than expected is generally stronger to those

Ashdod was lucky: when she was 10 months old, her parents became alarmed that she had little interest in looking them in the eyes, eating and moving from her back, and took her to the Mifne Center in Rosh Pinna, Israel, a clinic that focuses on children 5 months and older who show

41、early warning signs of autism. The results of the Mifne treatment were shocking, recalls the girls mother, Tikva. Now she goes to a regular school where she is the same sort of active, funny, normal child as anyone else, she says. Despite a big jump in autism awareness in the past decade, parents, s

42、chools and doctors still frequently ignore warning signs in very young children. These can be difficult to detect: a child never points at things, shows more interest in objects than people, has delayed speech and develops a fascination with toys turning around. Many experts regard these symptoms as

43、 harmless habits that kids will outgrow. New research and experience in some autism clinics, however, suggests that starting treatment by age 2 is critical to mitigating and in some cases entirely avoiding the disorder. Thats because unlike the brain of an adult or even an older child, a 12-or 18-mo

44、nth-olds brain is, in a sense, highly reprogrammable-that is, it responds well to treatments designed to permanently change basic patterns of thought and behavior.
