Some scientists speak of the increase in numbers of people as population pollution. About 2000 years ago, the world population was probably about 250 million; it reached a bi

6、iver is not the longest, the widest, or the most powerful river in the world. But in one sense it is the most important river, because it serves more people than any other river. In every way the Changjiang River is China's life stream. The Changjiang isn't just a trade river, a high way alo
7、ng which goods are picked up and sent. It is an agricultural river as well. A lot of irrigation ditches go out from it to millions of tiny garden-size farms. There men and women work endlessly with very old hand tools -planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, harvesting, raising the family's fo
8、od and raising the nation's food. It begins somewhere high in the place north of Tibet, running down from a three-mile height, tt goes for hundreds of miles, shouting loud through valleys. Only in the last 1,000 miles of its 3,900-mile journey does the Changjiang River become the sunny and cheer
9、ful river. 3.Task 4 Some people seem to have a knack for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules or grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quicldy than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent than others, so what makes language learning so much eas
10、ier for them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them. First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they discover
11、their own ways to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes. S
12、uccessful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find the people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communic
13、ate; they are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word. Finally, successful language lea
14、rners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the languag
15、e regularly because they want to learn with it. 4.Task 5 In an experiment designed to study the effect of majority opinion, small groups of subjects (实验对象) observed a standard straight line, and then judged which of three other lines equaled its length. One of the other lines was longer, one shorter
16、, one equal to the standard; the differences were great enough that they could be told easily. All but one member of each group had been instructed to agree upon a wrong answer for a majority of the trials. The experimental subject was thus put against a majority, and the subject's problem was w
17、hether to disagree with the majority, or to doubt his or her own judgment and agree. Many subjects refused to change and continued to hold to their independent ideas. But a rather large number of them yielded under pressure from other's apparent judgments. The amount of yielding depended on the
18、clarity of conditions (lack of clariw led to their following majority opinion) , individual differences, and the size of the opposition. With the opposition of only one other person, there was very little yielding; with two against one the amount of yielding became pronounced (显著的) ; and a majority
19、of three was nearly as effective as larger majorities against the only one who disagreed. 5.Task 6 The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growin
20、g and it may get much worse before it gets any better. Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. Th
21、ere is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems. Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that al
22、ready faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night! Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot ret
23、urn to the good old days of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise-if we shout loudly enough about it. 6.Task 7 Life in the twentieth century demands preparation. Today, all individuals in a country must have adequate schooling to prepare them for their work as well as for their responsibilities a
