In 1819, the French government asked scientist Augustin-Jean Fresnel to work on directing more light toward ships. Fresnel, who studied prisms (棱镜), began w

26、orking on a special lens (透镜) that used many prisms. Fresnel was able to send 80 percent of the light, so ships could see the light from twenty miles away! The new lens was named the Fresnel lens.
