When I first came to the United States from Hong Kong about 12 years ago, I could barely communicate in English. Today, although I still have much
2、 to learn, I realize I have made a good amount of progress in my years abroad.I grew up in a small village in China, where no one I knew spoke English. I wasnt exposed to English or any other language through books, magazines or TV. Only when I later went to study in Hong Kong, was I exposed to Amer
3、ican and Western culture through movies, music and other media. Although English is common in Hong Kong due to its history, I still couldnt speak, read or write much after graduating from high school.In my early 20s, I decided to move to New York City and I was determined to make a new life for myse
4、lf there. However, I didnt want to end up speaking my native language because I knew that learning English was very important if I wanted to be successful in this new country. New York seemed like another world and without speaking much English it was even more difficult to make friends.I didnt have
5、 a teacher at first, so I tried every way I could to learn the language. One way that was very useful was listening to the radio and watching TV, mostly news. I tried to speak like the people I heard on TV. They spoke more clearly and it was easier to understand than the English I heard people speak
6、ing in my neighborhood. I picked up one word at a time, and looked them up in the dictionary. I would also try to write down the words and remember them. 10、mchair. He appeared to be out of breath. With Mrs. Lims help, I managed to carry him to the porch where their car was parked. When we finally managed to get him inside the car, I drove to the hospital.We rushed him to the emergency and casualty ward(临时病室).The doctor on duty informed us that Mr. Lim
11、had suffered a mild stroke. Mr. Lim was admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU). Mrs. Lim and I looked after him all night long. It was then that Mrs. Lim asked me to contact her son and convey the news. I never knew that Mr. and Mrs. Lim had children. I could not recall a time when they ever menti
12、oned a son. I tried to contact the son at the given address, but I was told that he had moved to another town with his wife and children. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received th
18、e same answer. His heart grew heavier.Society has changed, people have changed, he murmured to himself. Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they
