D. in physics at Harvard, he spent time at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and at the National Science Foundation. He taught physics for 5 years at New York University

In 1962 he became an associate professor of physics .He has been a professor of physics at the Stevens Institute of Technology New Jersey since 1967 and was a staff writer for the New Yorker until 1993.
