1、Does China Need Aircraft CarriersAn Aircraft carrier is the biggest warship in the world; it weights nearly 100,000 tons. It provides the space for ship-based fighters to take off and land. These fighters are the main weapons of the aircraft carrier. Aircraft carrier is always the key part of a coun

2、trys navy.On November 29th 2011, Chinas first aircraft carrier Varyag left the shipyard in Dalian for its second trial voyage. Then, the topic of Chinas first aircraft carrier became popular immediately again. The first great mass fervor of Chinas first aircraft carrier appeared in August 2011, shor

3、tly after Varyags first trial voyage. Of course, almost all the media, including TV shows, newspapers, broadcast, magazines and websites, could not stop reporting this hot topic. Many of them took part in the argument that whether it is necessary for China to develop aircraft carriers. A magazine ca

4、lled “South” said it is a wrong choice for China to research and build aircraft carriers. This magazine gave several reasons and views, which has provided a good summary of these people who object to developing aircraft carriers.However, I do not agree with this magazine. I think this magazines view

5、s are not correct at all.First, the “South” magazine said that developing aircraft carriers costs a lot of money, while the money can contribute to the development of public traffic, education and health services. But in fact, if a country has not enough abilities to defend itself, how can it develo

6、p its public traffic, education and health services without being disturbed by international environment? We should know that good public services must be set up on a stable public environment. Without steady state and public environment, the development of public services can not last for a long ti

7、me; the achievement of public services a country has got can not be assured. Therefore, developing public services is important, and developing a countrys defense power can never be ignored, either. And developing aircraft carriers is the best choice to strengthen a countrys defense power.The magazi

8、ne also said aircraft carriers are not useful to todays China, because Chinese navy has been strong enough to defend Chinas territorial sea. But I do not think so. Maybe todays China is able to prevent other countries from violating our homeland. However, how about our seaborne shipping lines? Can w

9、e insure the safety of our shipping lines? Our ground force is strong, but our navy is not so strong. So we need to develop new ocean warships, especially aircraft carriers, to defend our shipping lines.At last, the magazine thought that Chinas developing aircraft carriers would cause other countrie

10、s worries, such as Japan, the Philippines, India and so on. These countries may react to Chinese navys rapid development. What is worse, Chinas developing aircraft carriers may cause armament races in Asia.How can these assumptions be the reasons why we do not develop aircraft carriers? They may hav

11、e some truth on their sides, but protecting our sovereign rights is more important. What is more, our government and military have announced many times that China is going to rise without aggression or expansion. In this case, why do these countries feel nervous about Chinas normal military developm

12、ent? Maybe we can do more to eliminate their worries. To think of ways to strengthening the relationship and communication with these countries may be effective.In fact, developing aircraft carriers can give many benefits to China.First, developing aircraft carriers can contribute to Chinese economy

13、. For example, the Sea Swallow Shipyard is the shipyard where aircraft carriers are built in Russia. Some military economists did research on this shipyard. The result of the research showed that when building an aircraft carrier, thousands of factories are involved, and about 700 thousand people wo

14、uld be employed. Building an aircraft carrier will create a GDP of 18 billion dollars. If China builds aircraft carriers as well, I am sure that China would achieve lots of economic benefits.Second, developing aircraft carriers can contribute to Chinas development of science and technology. A lot of

15、 civil technology comes from military technology. For example, computer and Internet technology came from US army in the 1950s. If a country wants to develop aircraft carriers, it should solve many technology problems first. If a country is able to solve all or most of these problems, its design ind

16、ustry, shipbuilding industry, machinery building industry and metallurgy industry must be advanced. Many researchers and scientists can make progress in their experience, skill and knowledge during building aircraft carriers.Last but not least, aircraft carriers are the symbol of strong states. If a

17、 country has one or several aircraft carriers, its people would feel proud. Developing aircraft carriers can unite the whole country citizens, they would be more willing to support to their country.So we can see that developing aircraft carriers is a good choice to China. China will join the international aircraft carrier country club soon. Lets show our benediction to Chinas development.
