1、Improve the English Listening Comprehension Abilityabstract in english learning and communication activities of human beings, listening is the most basic form and the best skill in understanding and absorbing verbal information communication. famous linguist krashen states that listening comprehensi

2、on is very important in language learning. however, there are many reasons that affect english listening. listening teaching in english has hardly born fruit. this paper, based on the literature review of english teaching and analysis of current situation, will find out the factors that affect liste

3、ning comprehension ability and discuss some feasible methods to improve students listening comprehension ability.key words listening comprehension ability factors methodsi. introductionas we all know that english is the most popularly learned foreign language in china. most students can use daily en

4、glish to communicate with each other. however, listening comprehension has long been a headache of chinese students in their english study and english teaching in all levels of chinese schools are still test-centered. the only aim for most students to learn english is to pass kinds of examination, s

5、o they do quite a lot of writing exercises in their daily life but ignore the listening and speaking abilities. some teachers and students think that an excellent student is one that can get a high score in the test. so, listening ability is neglected both in english teaching and learning.li lanqing

6、 pointed out that english teaching in china is time consuming with low efficiency, and the improvement in english teaching is urgently needed.” the college english curriculum requirements clearly defined teaching objective as: training students english comprehensive competence, especially listening

7、and speaking ability so that they can use english effectively in their future work and social interaction. with the introduction of the new curriculum standards, listening has been paid unprecedented attention in english teaching. however, the importance of listening is neglected in english teaching

8、 and we can also call it “cinderella”. so, to improve listening comprehension ability is our new topic.therefore, listening is not only a language skill requiring special training, but also an essential part in successfully acquiring a language. ones listening comprehension ability directly has impa

9、ct on their overall language competence. accordingly, listening also plays a more and more important role in english teaching. however, the improvement of it is never an easy task but involves long and uninterrupted effort.ii. literature review of english teaching in our country and analysis of curr

10、ent situation in english learningwith the frequent international communication, more and more people began to learn english, but few of them can use it as a native speaker. at the same time , li lanqing have mentioned several times about reforming the foreign language teaching that promoted many sch

11、olars and researchers to make a great contribution to english teaching . since then, some success has been achieved in english teaching, but it still can not keep up with the pace of the economic development in our country and the average level of foreign language of the intellectuals in our country

12、 is relatively low compared with those in developed countries like germany, or developing countries such as india, pakistan, indonesia and thailand.these shows there are many problems in our english teaching. more and more attention has been paid to the teaching of listening comprehension in the mid

13、dle schools with the deepening of english teaching reform in china. however, listening comprehension is still being held as the most difficult course in both english teaching and learningtraditional teaching methods are ppp, which are “presentation”, “practice” and “production”. it has been proved t

14、hat traditional teaching methods do not correspond with english learners discipline at all. and in traditional english language teaching in china, the teacher is always the center of class. students are not given many chances to practice listening and speaking. this causes students to depend on teac

15、hers in learning. the traditional listening teaching focuses on eliminating the language obstacles but ignores the understanding of the utterance under certain environment.however, with the changes of society, the traditional listening teaching concept has gradually changed. nowadays, students play

16、the leading role in their learning and teachers are just playing the role of guiding students to learn effectively. the popularity of multimedia enhances the quality of english teaching and asks for a higher requirement for students to engage in their language learning.iii. factors that affect liste

17、ning comprehension ability1 imperfection of basic knowledge of language1.1 factors in soundbeginners of english learning in china need an adequate mastery of english phonological knowledge and pronunciation skills.the teaching of pronunciation should enable the students to identify and produce engli

18、sh sounds themselves. stress and intonation are very important and should be taught from the very beginning.when listening, teachers should help students distinguish differences between sounds. do more practices so that they are sensitive to the openness of the mouth, the shape of the lips, as well

19、as the tension of tongue and larynx, and able to distinguish some vowels and consonants.1.2 lack of vocabularyvocabulary is often more important. it is frustrating for intermediate learners when they are aware that they can not communicate effectively because they do not know many of the words they

20、need”. ( paul davies & eric pearse, 2002: 59) therefore, vocabulary learning in english plays a crucial role. before english learners learn a language, they must know a certain amount of words. without a necessary vocabulary, there is not the foundation of language. if a language learner has not a r

21、ich vocabulary, he will not understand the words which someone expressed or cant understand them correctly.1.3 speaking speedfast language speaking can be controlled by an actor who is good at tongue twisters. some people enjoy more variation in speed than others, but everyone has a norm which is in

22、 characteristic of his usual conversation style. some people tend to use a rapid speed in everyday speech in english, but chinese students usually dont have such a speed in listening. although sometimes they can speak very fast, they may not catch up with the materials at normal speed while theyre l

23、istening to a tape, especially to a longer conversation or a passage .thats their problems. thats why chinese students can not suit the need of normal speed listening materials or native speakers.2. psychological factorslisteners listening ability is also influenced by psychological factors. sometim

24、es, listeners over-concentration on listening material leads to nervousness. anxiety has a negative effect on listening comprehension. anxiety is a kind of fear, and it has been proved that anxiety has a negative effect on language learning.psychological barriers are mainly reflected in two aspects:

25、 the state of being too nervous or the state of being unable to focus ones attention during listening .in regular listening practice, some students cant concentrate on the listening content, which will affect comprehension result. although they still wear their ear-phones, anxiety often occurs in ex

26、amination .some students are too eager to get high marks but they are also afraid that they cant adjust themselves to the listening material and the delivery rate. continuity and accuracy of listening cant be assured in such kind of state.3. difficulty in understandingthe ultimate goal of listening

27、is to obtain a comprehensive understanding among sentences, paragraphs and chapters. but some students are not good at catching key words or general meaning. they often try to understand the material word by word or sentence by sentence. this is a mistake for listeners. to develop a good habit when

28、listening is necessary. generally in connected speech, however, non-stressed syllables are uttered too quickly or too weakly to hear clearly and pauses are so short that it is impossible to catch every word. as a result, some learners fail to understand the listening material as a whole.iv. ways to

29、improve listening comprehension abilityin order to solve these listening problems, we should find some proper ways to overcome them. here are several methods.1. stimulating students interest in listeninginterest is the foundation of all mental activity .its very nature is to lead to thought and acti

30、on. one will learn and work more effectively if they are interested in what they are doing. suhomlinski said that the cultivation of study interest is an important driving force to promote students complex recognition. activities refer to offering an opportunity to students to use english or practic

31、e english in classroom. it can enhance motivation of learning and strengthen memory.2. combination of listening and classroom activitiesthere are many kinds of activities carried out in classroom such as intensive listening, dictation, daily report, brainstorming, picture-related activity, group dis

32、cussion, role-play, and gameand so on. these activities are of various types and purposes, helping students develop specific language and skills they need for authentic communication. (graves, 2000:153)training and improving students ability in listening comprehension should combine daily teaching w

33、ith the following points. first of all, in english class, teachers should try to organize their classes in english, whichs the most effective way and students can concentrate while listening to english. second, teachers should use the first five minutes before class efficiently, or the revision time

34、 and ask students to listen to the radios, television programmers in english.3. to be a fully attentive listener, students should practice speaking and reading. no matter what they are doing, where they are, they should always remember that things around them offer a good opportunity to practice spe

35、aking. in their daily life, they can talk about something in english with their friends. quite a lot of successful english scholars consider that the key to the language learning is to imitate. if they spend much time with foreign teachers, they can imitate their foreign teachers pronunciation and i

36、ntonation unconsciously.4. overcoming the psychological problemit is very important for students to have a good psychological state while listening .it is necessary to help them realize that listening is the first step of any language learning .meanwhile, they should be aware of the difficulty . so

37、students should have a strong determination and build up confidence to overcome difficulties, and never be afraid of it. sometimes, listeners mainly focus on key words and the main sentences, but not the whole passage. even if they can understand the article, they may not be able to accurately answe

38、r all the questions. before the listening begins, reading questions helps eliminate interference problems. listening with a purpose, students will not feel the burden. last but not least, overcoming the fear in hearts is a long-term process requiring patience and more practice of the skills.5. the c

39、hoice of listening materialsany language has its own rule .on one hand, teachers should select appropriate listening materials, arrange listening materials in a certain order.on the other hand, for students, they can select listening materials not only from their textbook, but also from other intere

40、sting books. and there are also many information resources for them to improve listening ability, such as bbc or voa news. beside, they can select other listening materials, like crazy english, watching the program of cctv9, reading china words. beside, they can select other listening materials, lik

43、better review the words they have learned again and again. vocabulary learning in these ways is usually very effective. besides, language learners can also learn new words from a context, which is a very effective way.7. combination of extensive listening and intensive listeningjust as reading is di

44、vided into intensive reading and extensive reading, the same is true for listening. for extensive listening, it is necessary for students to grasp the general idea or to catch the main idea of the whole passage. it aims to consolidate and enlarge students extension of the knowledge. for the intensiv

45、e listening, students should listen to materials carefully and try to understand each word and each sentence completely. the purpose of intensive listening is to cultivate students basic skills and to develop students ability of getting and dealing with information. besides, it is the foundation of

46、extensive listening. by doing so, students will not feel boring or impatient with the teaching procedure.in the process of english learning, learners should not only do some special exercises for extensive listening and intensive listening according to specific situation, but also combine both of th

47、em.v. conclusionit is well known that human beings come into contact with or learn language first through listening. the teaching of english listening isnt only a teaching of language, but also a training of ability. in the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, listening is the basi

48、c, and the most important skill. it isnt only the main way of acquiring language information, but the base of improving other skills. accordingly, to improve listening comprehension ability is to listen and practice over and over again. so paying more attention to listening training is an important
