1、Improve the English Listening Comprehension Abilityabstract in english learning and communication activities of human beings, listening is the most basic form and the best skill in understanding and absorbing verbal information communication. famous linguist krashen states that listening comprehensi
2、on is very important in language learning. however, there are many reasons that affect english listening. listening teaching in english has hardly born fruit. this paper, based on the literature review of english teaching and analysis of current situation, will find out the factors that affect liste
3、ning comprehension ability and discuss some feasible methods to improve students listening comprehension ability.key words listening comprehension ability factors methodsi. introductionas we all know that english is the most popularly learned foreign language in china. most students can use daily en
4、glish to communicate with each other. however, listening comprehension has long been a headache of chinese students in their english study and english teaching in all levels of chinese schools are still test-centered. the only aim for most students to learn english is to pass kinds of examination, s
5、o they do quite a lot of writing exercises in their daily life but ignore the listening and speaking abilities. some teachers and students think that an excellent student is one that can get a high score in the test. so, listening ability is neglected both in english teaching and learning.li lanqing
6、 pointed out that english teaching in china is time consuming with low efficiency, and the improvement in english teaching is urgently needed.” the college english curriculum requirements clearly defined teaching objective as: training students english comprehensive competence, especially listening
7、and speaking ability so that they can use english effectively in their future work and social interaction. with the introduction of the new curriculum standards, listening has been paid unprecedented attention in english teaching. however, the importance of listening is neglected in english teaching
8、 and we can also call it “cinderella”. so, to improve listening comprehension ability is our new topic.therefore, listening is not only a language skill requiring special training, but also an essential part in successfully acquiring a language. ones listening comprehension ability directly has impa
9、ct on their overall language competence. accordingly, listening also plays a more and more important role in english teaching. however, the improvement of it is never an easy task but involves long and uninterrupted effort.ii. literature review of english teaching in our country and analysis of curr
10、ent situation in english learningwith the frequent international communication, more and more people began to learn english, but few of them can use it as a native speaker. at the same time , li lanqing have mentioned several times about reforming the foreign language teaching that promoted many sch
11、olars and researchers to make a great contribution to english teaching . since then, some success has been achieved in english teaching, but it still can not keep up with the pace of the economic development in our country and the average level of foreign language of the intellectuals in our country
12、 is relatively low compared with those in developed countries like germany, or developing countries such as india, pakistan, indonesia and thailand.these shows there are many problems in our english teaching. more and more attention has been paid to the teaching of listening comprehension in the mid
13、dle schools with the deepening of english teaching reform in china. however, listening comprehension is still being held as the most difficult course in both english teaching and learningtraditional teaching methods are ppp, which are “presentation”, “practice” and “production”. it has been proved t
14、hat traditional teaching methods do not correspond with english learners discipline at all. and in traditional english language teaching in china, the teacher is always the center of class. students are not given many chances to practice listening and speaking. this causes students to depend on teac
15、hers in learning. the traditional listening teaching focuses on eliminating the language obstacles but ignores the understanding of the utterance under certain environment.however, with the changes of society, the traditional listening teaching concept has gradually changed. nowadays, students play
16、the leading role in their learning and teachers are just playing the role of guiding students to learn effectively. the popularity of multimedia enhances the quality of english teaching and asks for a higher requirement for students to engage in their language learning.iii. factors that affect liste
17、ning comprehension ability1 imperfection of basic knowledge of language1.1 factors in soundbeginners of english learning in china need an adequate mastery of english phonological knowledge and pronunciation skills.the teaching of pronunciation should enable the students to identify and produce engli
18、sh sounds themselves. stress and intonation are very important and should be taught from the very beginning.when listening, teachers should help students distinguish differences between sounds. do more practices so that they are sensitive to the openness of the mouth, the shape of the lips, as well
19、as the tension of tongue and larynx, and able to distinguish some vowels and consonants.1.2 lack of vocabularyvocabulary is often more important. it is frustrating for intermediate learners when they are aware that they can not communicate effectively because they do not know many of the words they
20、need”. ( paul davies & eric pearse, 2002: 59) therefore, vocabulary learning in english plays a crucial role. before english learners learn a language, they must know a certain amount of words. without a necessary vocabulary, there is not the foundation of language. if a language learner has not a r
21、ich vocabulary, he will not understand the words which someone expressed or cant understand them correctly.1.3 speaking speedfast language speaking can be controlled by an actor who is good at tongue twisters. some people enjoy more variation in speed than others, but everyone has a norm which is in
22、 characteristic of his usual conversation style. some people tend to use a rapid speed in everyday speech in english, but chinese students usually dont have such a speed in listening. although sometimes they can speak very fast, they may not catch up with the materials at normal speed while theyre l
23、istening to a tape, especially to a longer conversation or a passage .thats their problems. thats why chinese students can not suit the need of normal speed listening materials or native speakers.2. psychological factorslisteners listening ability is also influenced by psychological factors. sometim
24、es, listeners over-concentration on listening material leads to nervousness. anxiety has a negative effect on listening comprehension. anxiety is a kind of fear, and it has been proved that anxiety has a negative effect on language learning.psychological barriers are mainly reflected in two aspects:
