1、23 Chinese New Year, known in China as Spring Festival, is the most important festival of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is sometimes called the Lunar New Year, especially by people outside China. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calend
2、ar and ends on the 15th.4 Chinese New Years Eve is known as Chuxi in Chinese. It literally means “Lunar New Year Eve”. According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Year or “Nian” in Chinese. Nian would come on the first
3、day of New Year to devour 吞食吞食 livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children.5 To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year and believed that the Nian wouldnt attack any more people after eating the food they prepared. Once pe
4、ople saw the Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red, they then understood that the Nian was afraid of color red. Hence, every time when New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and put up spring festival couplets on windows and doors.6 People also used firecracke
5、rs to frighten the Nian and from then on, the Nian never came to the village again. The Chinese New Year celebrations are marked by visits to relatives and friends, a practice known as “new-year visits”. New clothes are usually worn to signify a new year.7 The color red is liberally used in all deco
6、rations. Red packets are given to juniors and children by the married and elder. Chinese New Year is observed as a public holiday not only in China but also in a number of countries and regions where a sizable Chinese population resides.89 The Lantern Festival, a Chinese festival, is celebrated on t
7、he fifteenth day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar. It is different from the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is also sometimes known as the “Lantern Festival” in locations such as Singapore, and Malaysia. During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night to temples carrying paper lante
8、rns and solve riddles on the lanterns. It officially ends Chinese New Year.10 Those who do not carry lanterns oftern enjoy watching informal lanterns parades. In addition to eating tangyuan, another popular activity at this festival is guessing lantern riddles, which often contain messages of good f
9、ortune, family reunion, abundant harvest, prosperity and love.1112 “Long Tai Tou”, meaning “Dragon Raises Its Head”, is celebrated every year on the second day of the second month in the Chinese lunar calendar. People believe that a haircut on that day will bring luck to them.1314 The Qingming Festi
10、val, meaning Clear and Bright Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival on the 104th day after the winter solstice 冬至冬至. Every leap year 闰年闰年, Qingming is on April 4. Astronomically, it is also a solar term 节节气气. Its name denotes 代表代表 a time for people to go outside and enjoy the greenery of sprin
11、gtime, and also to pay homage to the pass-away ones. Qingming is a statutory 法定的法定的public holiday in China.1516 Dan Wu (Dragon Boat Festival) is a day to commemorate 纪念纪念 the Chinese patriot 爱国者爱国者 and poet, Qu Yuan. Falling on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, it is a day to remind oneself of
12、 ones duties and obligations to the nation. Other than eating rice dumplings and participating in dragon boat races, this occasion ought to be used to commemorate the national patriots and to emphasize the importance of loyalty and commitment to the community.1718 The Night of Sevens, also known as
13、Magpie 喜鹊喜鹊 Festival, falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month on the Chinese calendar, named after the day. It is sometimes called Chinese Valentines Day in recent years.
