Theywere welcomed and most were successful in their academic stud

Foreign studentswho study in the United States benefit a lot from the educational system of the UnitedStates.Three developments in the United States higher education that the students arebenefiting from today started more than a century ago following the Civil War. Thefirst of these was the rap
12、id growth of the technological and professional education tomeet the urgent demands of a complex industrial and urban society. New schools oftechnology, engineering, architecture, law and medicine flourished. The second wasthe provision for graduate study, such as what had long existed in France and
13、Germany. Harvard and John Hopkins Universities quickly took the lead in this field,but the state universities did not lag far behind. The third was the increased provisionfor the education of women. This included the establishment of new womens colleges,such as Vassar, Wellesley and Smith, and the a
