1、-If和+whether的用法-第 5 页 If和 whetherif不能替换whether的5种情况 1.正式文体中，句中有or not 时 2.引起主语，表语，同位语从句时 3.作介词宾语时 4.放不定式前，与不定式组成词组时 5.作discuss等词的宾语时 以上是if和whether表示是否之意的区别，此外，if还有加入的意思，引起条件状语从句；而whether另有不管无论之意，引起让步状语从句whether与if作“是否”讲，在用法上有相同之处，也有不同之处。 一、相同之处。 1.whether和if都能引导宾语从句，常置于see,ask,learn,tell,wonder,doub

2、t,find out等动词之后。 如：He asked me whether/is I could help him. I want to know whether/if he lives there. 2.whether和if都可用it作形式主语从句中。如： its uncertain whether/if hell come this evening. 3.在be uncertain/doubtful之后，常用whether引导宾语从句，有时也可以用if，如： We are uncertain whether/if Mary will come. 二、不同之处。 1.whether可置于句

3、首引导主语从句，而if不能。如： _the 2000 Olympic Games will be in Beijing is not known yet. A.whether B.If C.Whether D.That 答案是C。 2.whether可用在介词之后，引导宾语从句，而If则不能。如： Success depends on whether we make evough effort. 3.whether可引导表语从句，if则不能。如： The puestion is whether it is not worthdoing. 4.在名词之后引导同位语从句时，用whether而不用i

4、f。如： The puestion whether the students answered correctly should be decided by the teacher. 5.whether后可接不定式，而if不能。如： Please tell us whether to go or stay here. 6.在有些动词（如discuss）之后，只能用whether，而不用if引导宾语从句。如： We discussed whether we should close the shop. 7.在引导否定概念in宾语从句时，只能用if，而不用whether.如：he asked me

5、 if I hadnt finished my work.whether和if都可以引导宾语从句，表示“是否”，在口语或间接引语中两者可以互换使用。如： I wonder if / whether I can get some advice from you. Ask him whether / if he can come. 但在有些情况下，whether和if的用法有一定区别。 1. whether引导的从句常可以与连词or或or not直接连用，而if一般不能。如： 正： Let me know whether you can come or not. 误： Let me know if

6、 you can come or not. 2. 当宾语从句提到句首时，只能用whether引导，而不能用if。如： 正： Whether it is true or not, I cant tell. 误： If it is true or not, I cant tell. 3. whether可以引导带to的不定式，if则不能。如： 正： I dont know whether to accept or refuse. 误： I dont know if to accept or refuse. 4. whether及其引导的成分可放于介词之后，作介词的宾语，但if不能。如： 正： I

7、worry about whether I hurt her feelings. 误： I worry about if I hurt her feelings. 5. whether可以引导从句，作主语、表语或同位语，而if不能。如： 正： It was uncertain whether he would come. 误： It was uncertain if he would come. 正： His first question was whether Tom had arrived yet. 误： His first question was if Tom had arrived

8、yet. 正： We must consider the question whether we will take these measures. 误： We must consider the question if we will take these measures.1、 在动词不定式之前只能用whether 。如： 例8 I cant decide whether to stay. 我不能决定是否留下。 2、 在whether or not 的固定搭配中。如： 例9 I want to know whether its good news or not . 我想知道是否是好消息。

9、3 、在介词后，只能用whether。如： 例10 His father is worried about whether he lose his work . 他的父亲担心是否会失去工作。 4、宾语从句放在句首表示强调时，只能用whether 。如： Whether this is true or not, I really dont know. 这是否真的，我真的不知道。（例11 Whether they can finish the work on time is still a problem . 他们是否能准时完成这项工作还是个问题。此例为主语从句，有误，感谢指出） 5、用if会引起

10、歧义时，只用whether。如： 例12 Could you tell me if you know the answer ? 这句话有两种意思whether和if的用法区别 1)whether和if常用来引导宾语从句，这时两者的含义区别很小，一般可通用。例如： I dont know whether/if they will come to help us. 我不知道他们是否来帮助我们。 I am not sure whether/if Ill have time to go with you. 我很难说我们是否有时间跟你们一起去。 上面两句无区别。但是，当whether与or not连成一

11、个词组时，whether不可换用if。例如： I dont know whether or not they will come for our help. 我不知道他们是否要来求我们支援。 【注意】若whether和or not不连在一起，在口语中可以用if取代whether，当然也可以用whether。例如： I am not certain if/whether the train will arrive on time. 我没有把握火车是否准时到达。 I dont care if/whether your car breaks down or not. 我不在乎您的车是否是会出故障。

12、此外，还有些情况值得注意： (1)在介词后面只能用whether，不能用if。例如： This depends upon whether we are determined to do it. 这件事要看我们是否有决心去做。 It depends on whether he is ready. 这件事要看他是否有准备。 I am not interested in whether youll come or not. 你来不来我不感兴趣。 We havent settled the question of whether well renew our supplies of coal for

13、factory. 是否要为我们工厂补充一些煤，这个问题我们还没有决定。 (2)在动词不定式之前，只能用whether，不能用if。例如： He doesnt know whether to stay or not. 他不能知道是否要留下来。 She doesnt knows whether to get married now or wait. 是否现在结婚或是等待她不知道。(3)在及物运动discuss后的宾语从句中，只能用whether，不能用if。例如： We discussed whether we should make a change in our plan. 我们讨论了是不是要

14、对我们的计划作一些修改。 We were discussing whether we should discuss the business with them. 我们正在讨论我们是否要和他们谈这个生意。 4)引导主语从句时，只能用whether，不能用if。例如： It is unknown whether he will come. 他是否来还不知道。 Whether the news is true remains a question. 这个消息是否真实仍然是个问题。5)引导表语从句时，只能用whether，不能用if。例如： What we want to know is wheth

15、er he will come to speak to us tomorrow. 我们想知道的是他明天是否来给我们讲话。 The question is whether they can take our advice. 问题是他们是否能接受我们的意见。 6)引导同位语从句时，常用whether。例如： The question whether well build another lecture buil你到底想说什么 hasnt been settled. 是否要另建一幢教学楼的问题还未决定。 The question whether hell come is unknown. 他是否来的

16、问题还不知道。 7)可以用来引导一个否定的宾语从句，whether则不能用来引导否定的宾语从句，因为它表示正反两方面的选择意义比较强。例如： Tell me if it is not going to rain, please. 请告诉我明天是否不会下雨。 He considered if he shouldnt tell her the secret. 他考虑他是否不该告诉她这个秘密。8)if除引导宾语从句外，还可以引导条件状语从句，作“是否”解。在容易引起混淆产生歧义的情况下，就不可用if，而须用whether。例如： Please let me know if you intend to

17、 come.这个句子有两种解释： A：“请让我们知道你是否想来。” B：“如果你打算来，请让我们知道。” 第一种解释是把if引导的从句看作宾语从句，把动词know视为及物动词(vt)；第二种解释是把if引导的从句当作条件状语从句，把动词know看作不及物动词(vi)。 在口语中，我们可以通过语调来表示两者的区别；但是，在书面语中，无上下文(如一张便条上写着这句话)，那就含混不清了。如果我们想表达的第一种含义，就得用whether来改写第一句。 Please let me know whether you intend to come. 又如： Let me know whether he ha

18、s left for Shanghai. 告诉我他是否已经去上海了。 Let me know if he has left for Shanghai. 如果他去上海，请告诉我一声。 此外，whether还可以引导让步状语从句，作“无论、不管”解，这儿就略而不谈1. 引导主语从句并在句首时不用if。如： Whether we go there is not decided. 我们是否去那里还没决定。 2. 引导表语从句时不用if。如： The question is whether we can get there on time. 问题是我们能否按时到达那里。 3. 引导同位语从句时不用if。

19、如： He asked me the question whether the work was worth doing. 他问我这个问题，那项工作是否值得做。 4. 在介词后引导宾语从句不用if。如： Im thinking about whether well have a meeting. 我在考虑我们是否要开个会。 5. 直接与not连用时不用if。如： I dont know whether or not you will go. 我不知道你是否去。 6. 宾语从句置于句首时不用if。如： Whether you have met George before, I cant reme

20、mber. 我不记得你以前是否见过乔治。 7. 在discuss等之后时不用if。如： Were discussing whether well go on a picnic. 我们在讨论是否要去野餐。 8. 当用if会引起歧义时不用if。如： Please let me know whether you are busy. 请告诉我你是否忙。(若用if，还可理解为“如果你很忙，你就告诉我。” 9. 在动词不定式前用whether不用if。如： He doesnt know whether to go or not. 他不知道是否去。 10. 宾语从句是否定式时不用whether。如： She asked me if Tom didnt come. 她问我Tom是不是没有来。
