Taking a panoramic view all over the world, developed countries have more improved education systems than the developing countries. More and more other education institutions are looking for their new market. Meanwhile,

2、Chinese education institutions improved rapidly. However, what is education for? Looking back upon all the great thinkers, I find out there are various answers for this question. For them, the aims of education range from serving the state to individual development. For example, Confucius holds that

3、 education is organized to serve the country and keep the country in good order and in harmony but Whitehead thinks that education is to nurture intelligent people. To my understanding, education should serve the growth of individual. Therefore, the aim of education is to foster a person rather than

4、 a hero. In my minds eye, we can develop a good habit and develop a way of thinking by accepting education. First of all, the purpose of education is to produce a virtuous or good man. Man is not good by nature, so he must be educated to control his animal activities or to be virtuous. Though I do n

5、ot agree with the point that man is not good by nature, I do agree that “man can only be man by education”. The difference between man and animal is that man can control their natural needs. Therefore, without virtue, there would be no difference between man and animals. As one of the most important

6、 perspectives of a society, education should first transform people into ethical beings.In addition, education should advance peoples knowledge. Education can make people distinguish right from wrong.With the help of education, all people could form their own systems of judgment and justification in

7、cluding the principle of fairness. Though knowledge cannot guarantee people a decent life, it gives them the opportunities to pursue their dreams. In this modern society, knowledge is dominating every aspect of our life and work. The amount of knowledge that one owns determines his abilities to surv

8、ive. The more knowledge one has, the more opportunities he has to succeed. Thus, more and more people pursue further education to catch up with their peers or to be more competitive. As the main channel of attaining knowledge, the education system should try to meet peoples desire for the knowledge.

9、Finally, education is responsible for personal all-round development. According to Tagore, the aim of the national system education is all-round development of the individual personality, including intellectual development, aesthetic education and creativity. That means the first two purposes above

10、are to serve this aim. Education is not all about virtue and knowledge. They are just the preparation for individual all-round development, which is the most important aim of education. Its the personal all-round development that makes education more meaningful. At the same time, individual all-roun

11、d development could promote the development of education. Nowadays, all-round development means that educational system should provide not only liberal education but also science and economy. These are the basic subjects of this modern society. A civilized country is built not only upon the basis of

12、 science and economy, but also culture of its people. Living in a civilized country, one should get access to education of all these perspectives.In sum, I think that education should serve the individual development. The development of a society or a country depends upon its virtuous and knowledgeable citizens contribution. And individual education level is the symbol of a societys civilization. Without personal development, the system of a society would fail.
