15、rn. The book contained Burns observation of the lives of ordinary people. He watched them doing farm work, going to church, and falling in love, and his humor and insights on everyday life made him a very popular writer. Robert Burns only lived to the age of 37, but he continues to have an influence

16、 on writers today. Anna Akhmatovapoet, translator, and literary criticwas born in the Ukraine, but spent much of her life in Russia. Much of her writing was political, and many of her poems, including the well-known Requiem, reflected the difficulties that Russians faced during the time of Joseph St

17、alin and World War II. Family life was also difficult for Akhmatova, who married three times, and whose one child was raised by grandparents. 22、cture on the poet Bash could be a big help to you. As we discussed last time, Bash is known today for his haiku. But did you know that haiku came from an earlier form of poetry called haikai? Thats what Bash was writing in the early part of his career. Now, we dont know a lot about Bashs early life,

23、 but we do know he studied poetry with a famous poet in Kyoto. We also know that Chinese poetry and the principles of Taoism had their influence on Bash. As an aside, my wife and I spent several weeks in Japan right after, right after we got married, and we went to the area where Bash was born.,To b

24、e continued ,Listening 1,We got to see the Ueno Castlean amazing, amazing place! It was built before Bash was born, so its something he would have seen, too. It, it gave, it gave me some real insights into 17th century Japan. But getting back to our topic, haikai poems are groups of verses, verses o

25、r paragraphs, you could say, all linked together. They were more like the poems of Shakespeare, for examplefairly long, they were fairly long and with a set formula, or structure. The short haiku form developed from the . from the first verse of the haikai, and Bash had enough haiku published to get

26、 pretty famous. He soon had his own writing school in Edo, now called Old Tokyo, and that became known as the Bash School.,To be continued ,Listening 1,That reminds meBash was not the poets family name. He got the name Bash from afrom a species of banana tree that was planted near his house! OK, get

27、ting back to what I was saying, the haiku developed from the longer haikai, but Bashs most famous books are not collections of haiku. Theyre a theyre in a form called haibun, which is a haiku followed by prose. The books are kind of like collections of essayseach essay beginning with a haiku. Bash w

28、rote these books, he wrote these books while he was traveling, and he did a lot of traveling. In 1689, Bash walked for five months through the villages and mountains north of Edo and along the coast of the Sea of Japan.,To be continued ,Listening 1,During this journey, Bash produced his masterwork,

29、Narrow Road to a Far Province. The modern poet Miyazawa Kenji said this about the book, “It was as if the very soul of Japan had written it.” The book is a collection of haibun, and Bashs writing reflects the everyday problems of travel, like lying awake at night, lying awake at night in a bed full

30、of fleas, with a horse making noise outside. Honestly, thats what he wrote about! But the book is also full of insights into nature, life, and deathpretty big themes. He is able to turn his observations on the outside worldon the external world into very insightful comments on deeper subjects.,Liste

37、Shakespeares poetry. Could you explain that? Professor: Sure. Im glad you asked about that. I didnt want to confuse anyone, because even though Shakespeare was a contemporary of the early Japanese poets who wrote haikai, they didnt have any, they didnt have any influence on each other. In other word

Professor: The haikai were longer poems, and they followed a very specific formula. Each verse had a certain number of lines, and there was a set number of vers

39、es in each poem. As an aside, the haikai came from a previous form called renga. That was really formal poetry, whereas haikai, haikai were for the common people to read. But getting back to our topic, Shakespeares sonnets were also fairly long poems with a set number of verses and lines. Student 3:

He thought that nature had lessons to teach us if we sat quietly, if we just sat quietly and listened. He also studied Zen Buddhism. He was a deep thinker, and for him, the haiku reflected the truth tha
