2、ei,andestablishedthefirstfeudalempireinChinashistory.Intheyear221B.C.,whenheunifiedthewholecountry,YingZhengstyledhimselfemperor.HenamedhimselfShihuangDi,thefirstemperorinthehopethathislatergenerationsbethesecond,thethirdeventheonehundredthandthousandthemperorsinproperordertocarryonthehereditarysyst

3、em.Sincethen,thesupremefeudalrulersofChinasdynastieshadcontinuedtocallthemselvesHuangDi,theemperor.Afterhehadannexedtheothersixstates,EmperorQinShihuangabolishedtheenfeoffmentsystemandadoptedtheprefectureandcountysystem.Hestandardizedlegalcodes,writtenlanguage,track,currencies,weightsandmeasures.Top

4、rotectagainstharassmentbytheHunaristocrats.EmperorQinShihuangorderedtheGreatWallbebuilt.Allthesemeasuresplayedanactiveroleineliminatingthecauseofthestateofseparationanddivisionandstrengtheningtheunificationofthewholecountryaswellaspromotionthedevelopmentofeconomyandculture.Theyhadagreatanddeepinflue

5、nceuponChinas2,000yearoldfeudalsociety.EmperorQinShihuangorderedthebooksofvariousschoolsburnedexceptthoseoftheQindynastyshistoryandculture,divinationandmedicinesinanattempttopushhisfeudalautocracyintheideologicalfield.Asaresult,Chinasancientclassicshadbeendevastatedanddestroy.Moreover,heonceordered4

6、60scholarsbeburiedalive.Thoseeventswerelatercalledinhistory“theburningofbooksandtheburyingofConfucianscholars.”EmperorQinShihuang，forhisownpleasure,conscribedseveralhundredthousandconvictsandwentinforlarge-scaleconstructionandhadoversevenhundredpalacesbuiltintheGuanzhongPlain.Thesepalacesstretchedse

7、veralhundredliandhesoughtpleasurefromonepalacetotheother.Oftennobodyknewwhereherangingtreasuresinsidethetomb,wereenclosedalive.EmperorQinShihuangsMausoleumhasnotyetbeenexcavated.Whatlookslikeinsidecouldnolybeknownwhenitisopened.However,thethreepitsoftheterra-cottawarriotexcavatedoutsidetheeastgateof

9、werefound20mnorthofNo.1Pitrespectivelyafterthedrillingsurvey.Theterra-cottawarriorsandhorsesarearrayedaccordingtotheQindynastybattleformation,symbolizingthetroopskeepingvigilbesidethemausoleum.Thisdiscoveryarousedmuchinterestbothathomeandabroad.In1975,amuseum,housingthesiteofNo.1andcoveringanareaof1

10、6,300squaremeterswasbuiltwiththepermissionoftheStateCouncil.ThemuseumwasformallyopenedtopubliconOct.1,theNationalDay,1979.No.1Pitis230meterslongfromeasttowest,62mwidefromnorthtosouthand5mdeep,coveringatotalareaof14,260squaremeters.Itisanearth-and-woodstructureintheshapeofatunnel.Therearefiveslopinge

11、ntrancesontheeasternandwesternsidesofthepitrespectively.Thepitisdividedintoelevencorridorsbytenearthenpartitionwalls,andthefloorsarepavedwithbricks.Thickrafterswereplacedontothewalls(butnowonecanonlyseetheirremains),whichwerecoveredwithmatsandthenfinesoilandearth.ThebattleformationoftheQindynasty,fa

12、cingeast.Intheeastendarearrayedthreelinesofterra-cottawarriors,70piecesineach,totaling210pieces.Theyaresupposedtobethevanoftheformation.Immediatelybehindthemare38columnsofinfantrymenalternatingwithwarchariotsinthecorridors,eachbeing180mlong.Theyareprobablythemainbodyoftheformation.Thereisonelineofwa

13、rriorsintheleft,rightandwestendsrespectively,facingoutwards.Theyareprobablytheflanksandtherear.Therearealtogether27trialtrench,itisassumedthatmorethan6,000claywarriorsandhorsescouldbeunearthedfromNo.1Pit.No.2PitsisabouthalfthesizeofNo.1Pit,coveringabout6,000squaremetersTraildiggingsshowthisisacompos

14、iteformationofinfantry,cavalryandchariotsoldiers,fromwhichroughlyover1,000claywarriors,and500chariotsandsaddledhorsescouldbeunearthed.The2,000-year-oldwoodenchariotsarealreadyrotten.Buttheirshafts,crossyokes,andwheels,etc.leftclearimpressionsontheearthbed.Thecopperpartsofthechariotsstillremain.Eachc

15、hariotispulledbyfourhorseswhichareoneandhalfmetershighandtwometreslong.Accordingtotextualresearch,theseclayhorsesweresculpturesafterthebreedintheareaofHexiCorridor.Thehorsesforthecavalrymenwerealreadysaddled,butwithnostirups.No.3Pitcoversanareaof520m2withonlyfourhorses,onechariotand68warriors,suppos

16、edtobethecommandpostofthebattleformation.Now,No.2and3Pitshavebeenrefilled,butvisitorscanseesomeclayfiguresandweaponsdisplayedintheexhibitionhallsinthemuseumthathadbeenunearthedfromthesetwopits.ThefloorsofbothNo.1and2Pitswerecoveredwithalayerofsiltof15to20cmthick.Inthesepits,onecanseetracesofburntbea

17、mseverywhere,somerelicswhichweremostlybroken.AnalysisshowsthatthepitswereburneddownbyXiangYu,leaderofapeasantarmy.Alloftheclaywarriorsinthethreepitsheldrealweaponsintheirhandsandfaceeast,showingEmperorQinShihuangsstrongdeterminationofwipingoutthesixstatesandunifyingthewholecountry.Theheightoftheterr

18、a-cottawarriorsvariesfrom1.78m,theshortest,to1.97m,thetallest.Theylookhealthyandstrongandhavedifferentfacialexpressions.ProbablytheyweresculptedbycraftsmenaccordingtorealsoldiersoftheQindynasy.Theyorganicallycombinedtheskillsofroundengraving,bas-reliefandlinearengraving,andutilizedthesixtraditionalf

19、olkcraftsofsculpturing,suchashand-moulding,sticking,cutting,paintingandsoon.Theclaymodelswerethenputinkilns,bakedandcolour-painted.Astheterra-cottafigureshavebeebburntandhavegonethroughthenaturalprocessofdecay,wecantseetheiroriginalgorgeouscolours.However,mostoftheterra-cottafiguresbearthetraceofthe

20、originalcolours,andfewofthemarestillasbrightasnew.Theyarefoundtobepaintedbymineraldyestuffsofvermilion,brightred,pinkdarkgreen,powdergreen,purple,blue,orange,blackandwhitecolours.Thousandsofrealweaponswereunearthedfromtheseterra-cottaarmypits,includingbroadknives,swords,spears,dagger-axes,halberds,b

21、ows,crossbowsandarrowheads.Theseweaponswereexquisitelymade.Someofthemearestillverysharp,analysesshowthattheyaremadeofalloysofcopperandtin,containingmorethantenkindsofothermetals.Sincetheirsurfacesweretreatedwithchromium,theyareasbrightasnew,thoughburiedundergroundformorethan2,000years.Thisindicatest

22、hatQindynastysmetallurgicaltechnologyandweapon-manufacturingtechniquealreadyreachedquiteahighlevel.InDecember1980,twoteamsoflargepaintedbronzechariotsandhorseswereunearthed20metreswestofthemoundofEmperorQinShihuangsMausoleum.Thesesingleshaftfour-horsechariotseachcomprises3,462spareparts,andhasabodyw

23、ithtwocompartments,onebehindtheother,andanellipticalumbrellalikecanopy.Thefourhorsesharnessedtothechariotare65-67centimeterstall.Therestoredbronzechariotsandhorsesareexactimitationsoftruechariot,horseanddriverinhalflife-size.Thechariotsandhorsesaredecoratedwithcoloureddrawingsagainstwhitebackground.

24、Theyhavebeenfittedwithmorethan1,500pieceseofgoldandsilversanddecorations,lookingluxurious,splendidandgraceful.ProbablytheyweremeantfortheuseofEmperorQinShihuangssoultogooninspection.Thebronzechariotsandhorsesweremadebylostwaxcasting,whichshowsahighleveloftechnology.Forinstance,thetortoise-shell-like

25、canopyisabout4mmthick,andthewindowisonly1mmthickonwhicharemanysmallholesforventilation.Accordingtoapreliminarystudy,thetechnologyofmanufacturingthebronzechariotsandhorseshasinvolvedcasting,welding,reveting,inlayingembeddingandchiseling.Theexcavationofthebronzechariotsandhorsesprovidesextremelyvaluab

26、lematerialanddataforthetextualresearchofthemetallurgicaltechnique,themechanismofthechariotandtechnologicalmodelingoftheQindynasty.No.2bronzechariotandhorsesnowondisplaywerefoundbrokeninto1,555pieceswhenexcavated.Aftertwo-and-halfyearscarefulandpainstakingrestorationbyarchaeologistsandvariousspecialists,theywereformallyexhibitedinthemuseumonOctober1,1983.No.1bronzechariothandhorsesareondisplayfrom1988.
