I wish I could just give them a little bit of hope and make them believe that they can have dreams,” says Obada Kassoumah, who is a Syrian student in Tokyo now. He has become a translator of Japan
18、ese comics into Arabic(阿拉伯语).As a student at university in Syria, Obada received a scholarship to go to Japan on an exchange program. That was in 2012, and the unrest(动乱) in the country had already started. When the situation got too dangerous, his parents decided to send him to live with his aunt i
19、n Jordan until he could leave for Tokyo.When his scholarship ended a year later, he was able to stay in Japan as a regular student, and picked up a part-time job translating Captain tsubasa. “I watched it as a kid and I loved it,” says Obada. “Its a story about a kid having a dream to become a profe
20、ssional football player and working hard to make that dream come true. Thats something should make these kids see.”“For Syrian kids it is very important to be able to escape from reality for a while. And these books can also give them some hope for their own future,” explains Prof. Masanori Naito, w
21、ho had spent several years looking for ways to help kids affected by the conflict. One of the places where Captain Tsubasa now provides a small escape from reality is a refugee(难民) home where copies were handed out to around 60 refugees. “What the kids usually get are of course clothes and food, and
22、 so they were really surprised when they suddenly had Japanese comic books in their own language. And you really could tell that from their eyes!” says Prof. Masanori Naito.Back in Tokyo, Obada Kassoumah has decided to keep translating even more adventures of Captain Tsubasa into Arabic.
