3、dmakethatdreamcometrue. iwasbornprematurebyabout10weeks,whichresultedinmyblindness,some64yearsago.theconditionisknownasretrolentalfibroplasia,andit'snowveryrareinthedevelopedworld.littledidiknow,lyingcurledupinmyprimbabyhumidicribin1948thati'dbeenbornattherightplaceandtherighttime,thatiwasin
4、acountrywhereicouldparticipateinthetechnologicalrevolution. thereare37milliontotallyblindpeopleonourplanet,butthoseofuswho'vesharedinthetechnologicalchangesmainlycomefromnorthamerica,europe,putershavechangedthelivesofusallinthisroomandaroundtheworld,butithinkthey'vechangedthelivesofweblindpe
5、oplemorethananyothergroup.andsoiwanttotellyouabouttheinteractionbetweencomputer-basedadaptivetechnologyandthemanyvolunteerswhohelpedmeovertheyearstobecomethepersoniamtoday.it'saninteractionbetweenvolunteers,passionateinventorsandtechnology,andit'sastorythatmanyotherblindpeoplecouldtell.butle
6、tmetellyouabitaboutittoday. wheniwasfive,iwenttoschoolandilearnedbraille.it'saningenioussystemofsixdotsthatarepunchedintopaper,andicanfeelthemwithmyfingers.infact,ithinkthey'reputtingupmygradesixreport.idon'tknowwherejulianmorrowgotthatfrom.(laughter)iwasprettygoodinreading,butreligionan
7、dmusicalappreciationneededmorework.(laughter) whenyouleavetheoperahouse,you'llfindthere'sbraillesignageinthelifts.lookforit.haveyounoticedit。ido.ilookforitallthetime. (laughter) wheniwasatschool,thebooksweretranscribedbytranscribers,voluntarypeoplewhopunchedonedotatatimesoi'dhavevolumest
8、oread,andthathadbeengoingon,mainlybywomen,sincethelate19thcenturyinthiscountry,butitwastheonlywayicouldread.wheniwasinhighschool,igotmyfirstphilipsreel-to-reeltaperecorder,andtaperecordersbecamemysortofpre-computermediumoflearning.icouldhavefamilyandfriendsreadmematerial,andicouldthenreaditbackasman
9、ytimesasineeded.anditbroughtmeintocontactwithvolunteersandhelpers.forexample,whenistudiedatgraduateschoolatqueen'suniversityincanada,theprisonersatthecollinsbayjailagreedtohelpme.igavethemataperecorder,andtheyreadintoit.asoneofthemsaidtome,"ron,weain'tgoinganywhereatthemoment." (la
10、ughter) butthinkofit.thesemen,whohadn'thadtheeducationalopportunitiesi'dhad,helpedmegainpost-graduatequalificationsinlawbytheirdedicatedhelp. well,iwentbackandbecameanacademicatmelbourne'smonashuniversity,andforthose25years,taperecorderswereeverythingtome.infact,inmyofficein1990,ihad18mi
11、lesoftape.students,familyandfriendsallreadmematerial.mrs.loisdoery,whomilatercametocallmysurrogatemum,readmemanythousandsofhoursontotape.oneofthereasonsiagreedtogivethistalktodaywasthatiwashopingthatloiswouldbeheresoicouldintroduceyoutoherandpubliclythankher.butsadly,herhealthhasn'tpermittedhert
12、ocometoday.butithankyouhere,lois,fromthisplatform. (applause) isawmyfirstapplecomputerin1984,andithoughttomyself,"thisthing'sgotaglassscreen,notmuchusetome."howverywrongiwas.in1987,inthemonthoureldestsongerardwasborn,igotmyfirstblindcomputer,andit'sactuallyhere.seeitupthere。andyous
13、eeithasno,whatdoyoucallit,noscreen.(laughter)it'sablindcomputer.(laughter)it'sakeynotegold84k,andthe84kstandsforithad84kilobytesofmemory.(laughter)don'tlaugh,itcostme4,000dollarsatthetime.(laughter)ithinkthere'smorememoryinmywatch. itwasinventedbyrussellsmith,apassionateinventorinnew
14、zealandwhowastryingtohelpblindpeople.sadly,hediedinalightplanecrashinxx,buthismemorylivesoninmyheart.itmeant,forthefirsttime,icouldreadbackwhatihadtypedintoit.ithadaspeechsynthesizer.i'dwrittenmyfirstcoauthoredlaborlawbookonatypewriterin1979purelyfrommemory.thisnowallowedmetoreadbackwhati'dw
15、rittenandtoenterthecomputerworld,evenwithits84kofmemory. in1974,thegreatraykurzweil,theamericaninventor,workedonbuildingamachinethatwouldscanbooksandreadthemoutinsyntheticspeech.opticalcharacterrecognitionunitsthenonlyoperatedusuallyononefont,butbyusingcharge-coupleddeviceflatbedscannersandspeechsyn
16、thesizers,hedevelopedamachinethatcouldreadanyfont.andhismachine,whichwasasbigasawashingmachine,waslaunchedonthe13thofjanuary,1976.isawmyfirstcommerciallyavailablekurzweilinmarch1989,anditblewmeaway,andinseptember1989,themonththatmyassociateprofessorshipatmonashuniversitywasannounced,thelawschoolgoto
17、ne,andicoulduseit.forthefirsttime,icouldreadwhatiwantedtoreadbyputtingabookonthescanner.ididn'thavetobenicetopeople。 (laughter) inolongerwouldbecensored.forexample,iwastooshythen,andi'mactuallytooshynow,toaskanybodytoreadmeoutloudsexuallyexplicitmaterial.(laughter)but,youknow,icouldpopabooko
18、ninthemiddleofthenight,and-(laughter)(applause) now,thekurzweilreaderissimplyaprogramonmylaptop.that'swhatit'sshrunkto.andnowicanscanthelatestnovelandnotwaittogetitintotalkingbooklibraries.icankeepupwithmyfriends. therearemanypeoplewhohavehelpedmeinmylife,andmanythatihaven'tmet.oneisanot
19、heramericaninventortedhenter.tedwasamotorcycleracer,butin1978hehadacaraccidentandlosthissight,whichisdevastatingifyou'retryingtoridemotorbikes.hethenturnedtobeingawaterskierandwasachampiondisabledwaterskier.butin1989,heteamedupwithbilljoycetodevelopaprogramthatwouldreadoutwhatwasonthecomputerscr
