1、A Research on the Changes of English Pre-service Teachers Ideas Based on My Own InternshipChapter1 Introduction1.1Research Background With the deepening of the reform and opening up, as well as the effect of globalization, English is playing a more and more important role in our daily life. Although

2、 we cant say its popular in China, we can still say it has integrated into many aspects of our life. So the education of English is very urgent, and also, we have made great progress in English teaching. But in another hand, we still have to think whether the English ability of students is balanced,

3、 and whether we are leading a proper and effective way in teaching English. In the 80s in last century, with the opening policy, English had become one of the most popular majors, which means the education of English had stepped to the right track. In 90s, The High School English Teaching Outline ha

4、d been publish by the ministry of education, the book was divided into two parts, basic stage and senior stage. In the late 90s, with the development of economy, the labor market tend to be upscale. So the original outline was no longer adapted to the new situation any more. Therefore, in 2000, the

5、minister issued a new outline. The description for the target and standard of who majors in English in this outline is, with a solid basic skills, broad knowledge, certain relative professional knowledge, strong ability and high quality. In the 17-year times, there had been great changes in internat

6、ional and domestic situation, we need to do further adjustment and optimization in the standard of cultivating talents.In this kind of circumstance, there is an increasing application of English teacher, there are more and more undergraduate students who are assigned to various stages of schools to

7、spend their internship. And whats more, rounds of new curriculum reform had put forward higher requirements to teachers. As a pre-service teacher, a research on the changes of English pre-service teachers ideas is necessary.1.2 Purpose and Significance of the StudyTeachers teaching ideas are an impo

8、rtant concept in getting to know teachers inside world and the process of their thought. In English teaching, teachers are definitely a significant part. So pre- service teachers ideas about language and language teaching will influence a lot. Not only will their ideas influence the way they teach i

9、n the future, but also will influence the efficiency of students, or even influence the final learning results of the whole class.While studies on ideas of teachers are meaningful for Chinas present education environment, the researches about ideas of pre-service teachers are definitely more signifi

10、cant. This thesis is exactly a research that focuses on the changes of ideas of pre-service teachers from various aspects. So understanding the ideas changes can provide information for English educators, and help pre-service teachers have a better development in the coming teaching career.1.3 Resea

11、rch QuestionsOn the basis of my own internship and some previous studies, this thesis tries to explore the ideas that pre-service teachers hold before and after internship. And this thesis is guided by the following questions:1. What changes will happen before and after internship.2. What factors co

12、ntribute to the changes of pre-service teachers ideas.3. What kind of development will happen after the internship.These three questions will influence each other and affect together. The first question is mainly about the changes, and the second focuses on factors that causing changes, while the th

13、ird is the future development.Chapter2 Literature Review2.1Researches About Ideas Generally speaking, the idea we are talking about is a kind of comprehensive knowledge toward things which is formed in the practice of life.it is also a systematic collection of subjective and objective understanding.

14、 Consciousness was formed by ideas and impression, it is a object of consciousness, ideology, and intellect. According to Cihai(1989), idea refers to the image or the image of the generalization of objective things in human mind. Idea belongs to spiritual aspect and contrast with material things. In

15、 Chinese Encyclopedia of Philosophy, idea is also contrast to material, and it is to know and reflect external reality in consciousness, or create an object form in consciousness. In Platos philosophy, it is an eternal existence, it is a perfect sample or model of perceptual things. Idea was form in

16、 three stages. The first stage is peoples perception of events. In perception, people will have detailed understanding of external things and objective world, and have a image and knowledge toward them. The second stage is the formation of conception based on perception. After some certain practice,

17、 people have understanding and awareness of general material object, which had become the objective existence in their subjective mind. The third stage is people transform the world by conception and governing their behavior. All in all, ideas are not only a kind of conscious or reflection of object

18、ive reality, but also a way to explain and transform external things. Because philosophies are only trying to explain the world by different ways, but the matter is to change the world. So idea should be a king of consciousness that people use to understand external world. This kind of consciousness

19、 can be constantly revised and understood in the process of practice, which is a way to transform objective things. 2.2Researches About English Teachers Teaching IdeaCompared to general teachers teaching idea, researches about discipline teachers teaching idea are less. In modern researches of Engli

20、sh teaching, the researches that directly explore teachers teaching idea is not very enough, and of course there are no standard theoretical system. In the background of new curriculum reform, there are more and more teachers and scholars who pay much attention to matters like English curriculum and

21、 specific teaching in class, instead, the concerns about factors that affect the teaching ideas are decreasing. Although the number of researches about English teachers teaching ideas is not much, we can still see that the teaching ideas of English teachers have changed a lot according to traditiona

22、l ideas in the background of new curriculum reform. In traditional teachers teaching idea, the main ideas of teachers is to pass the exam and convey knowledge, but now the ideas have changed a lot. A foreign language educator, Wu Yian(2005) had once divided teaching idea dimension into students, tea

23、chers, language, and teachers attitude toward students and language. But according to current research, we cannot specify whether the teaching idea of teachers had completely transformed or not, or even the certain connection between teaching behavior. So as for teaching idea research, we need to fi

24、nd its internal mechanism, influencing factors, characteristics to proceed a more detailed research, in order to improve the teachers professional development more effectively.Chapter3 Three Research Methodologies3.1 ObjectivesThe study is mainly aimed at tracking English pre-service teachers teachi

25、ng ideas through comparing the ideas before and after the internship. Sometimes an action will reflect ones inner world. In order to dig out the inner thinking under their behavior, I will discuss with my fellows and in the meantime, observe and review my own behavior. I believe this kind of researc

26、h method is sufficient enough. Through comparing changes in teaching beliefs,opinions on English studying,ideas of English teaching, ideas of student-teacher relationship, the analyze in teaching method will be deeper. 3.2SubjectsThis research is based on my own internship. I was a junior student of

27、 a higher pedagogical college who major in English. In the former two years of my college, I have attended almost ten compulsory foundation courses just like comprehensive English, English extensive reading, listening, speaking, translation and so on. According to the arrangement of courses, in my f

28、irst semester of second year of my college, we started to enter pre-service English teacher education module,which includes English teaching class. As the subject of this research, I believe my own internship experience is more persuasive for this research. The internship began in September and ende

29、d in the middle of January, which had lasted for about half an year. I was arranged in the middle grade department in a rural middle school, and worked as internship class teacher and English teacher for No.70 and No. 72. My teacher in charge is Miss Yuan who had been an English teacher for about te

30、n years. In this process of my research, I was both observer and subject. In the meantime, I used diary to record my daily internship experience. Therefore, my own internship can comprehensively and veritably reflect the professional development of pre-service teachers.3.3Instruments3.3.1Internship

31、In Person In one week I reached the school, I started to teach English class for my guidance teacher. In the process of contacting with my students, I have realized a lot. Firstly, the basic quality of an English is we should have a solid professional knowledge of English. Only then you will always

32、be right in knowledge aspect. Being a teaching is a sacred profession, if you make something wrong, you mistake will be magnified many times.secondly, a teacher should have his own teaching style, in an other word, he should have unique ways to teach or manage students. Just like how to recite new w

33、ords, how to give dictation, and how to hold students attention. Thats what we should learn for a whole life as a teacher. Thirdly, being a teacher is not only teaching knowledge, in the same time, we should pay attention to our own behaviors, so as to be a good sample for students.3.3.2Interviews w

34、ith fellowsAs a higher pedagogical college student, I have many schoolmates who are also practice in schools, so I have good condition to interview will my schoolfellows. Apart from this, my internship school is the school I used to study, I have chances to interview many internship pre-service teac

35、hers thanks to my old teachers introduction. In the ten fellows I interviewed, nine of them had big changes in ideas like teaching methods, opinions on English studying and on student-teacher relationship. And only one of them is indifferent. Chapter4 Results and Analysis4.1Ideas of Pre-teachers Bef

36、ore InternshipBefore the internship, maybe like most of us, I think teachers are the owners and initiators of knowledge. The prior mission of teachers is to spread knowledge. But there are many differences I have concluded during our internship.Firstly, the class is not very ideal like we have learn

37、ed in college class. The mode we simulated in class is always a ideal mode, in which students will actively participated in class interaction, like answering questions, or can always understanding the teaching contents and giving a positive feedback. Secondly, in the general experience in college cl

38、ass, we are always trying to be all English teaching combined with multimedia teaching equipment. We have been already familiar with this kind of mode. Now I can seldom hear English teaching class, and also the homework assigned is very rigid. A English learner should be more exposed to English envi

39、ronment. They should contact with English more and feel the speaking style of English. Instead of simple reciting and dictation, the form of homework should be more flexible.Thirdly, why are we teaching? We may answer for various reasons. But in school internship, we may conclude to a different answ

40、er. For a middle school, maybe the most important is not teaching or cultivating students. Instead, the most important thing for them is enrollment rate. Thats what we always call exam-oriented education. Although there are many differences between ideal and real situation. I think we should still h

41、old the original belief and try to be a good teacher. We should learn to balance the teaching dream we are holding and the reality we are facing. 4.2Changes of Pre-teachers Beliefs After InternshipBeing a teacher is not like what we had imaged before. During the internship, there had been many chang

42、es in my teaching idea. The knowledge we have learned in class can not perfectly fit the real situation. Sometimes we may make changes, or sometimes we may make improvements.4.2.1 Changes in Ideas of English Teaching Like I have mentioned before, changes in ideas of English teaching mainly concentra

43、te on “what to teach”.In the process of our internship, most of us will gradually found that reality is not as simple as we had expected, classes are always like a teachers monologue. Even like my guidance teacher, Miss Yuan, although I respect her so much, in her class, she is also mainly interpret

44、ing of words, phrases or sentence. There are seldom interaction with students, and there are mainly writing on the blackboard instead of using of the multimedia equipment. In fact, in the past we may think teaching is just like we had practiced, reading new words and interpreting passage, teaching g

45、rammar and dictation. But instead, we find that it is far not enough. Although Miss Yuans teaching style is very common and not advocated, we cannot say there are nothing advisable. Without PPT, we will be more clear about what we want to teach and spread. We will have a clear structure of what we w

46、ant to teach and what we should teach.A qualified teacher should teach ways and strategies of how to study English, and try to develop students habits to study English. 4.2.2 Changes in Ideas of Student-teacher Relationship It was difficult to forget the first scene I was in the class. In the first

47、day of my internship, the main task is to be familiar with the environment of the school and classes. When I was not prepared, my guidance teacher suddenly called me to teach students to read the new words in topic one. In the moment I got the phone, I was very anxious. When I reached the gate of sc

48、hool, I lingered for countless times whether I should go in. After I gave a call to my friend who is also during internship, I finally made up my mind to go in.The first thing is self-introduction. I pretend to cover my nervousness. But unnaturally, my introduction was interrupted for many times. It

49、 was not like I had imaged, I have to give a long speech for introductions like where I am from or who I am. Students had asked many kind of questions, like “Which college are you from?”, “Have you graduated?”, or even “Do you have a boyfriend ?” and so on. I started to realize their amity and to some extent maybe I was very popular.In Chinese culture, students should be afraid of teachers, but to my surprise, they are not. I was surprised to find they are
