2、mmylife.Thatsit.Nobigdeal.Justthreestories.Thefirststoryisaboutconnectingthedots.IdroppedoutofReedCollegeafterthefirstsixmonthsbutthenstayedaroundasadrop-inforanothereighteenmonthsorsobeforeIreallyquit.SowhydidIdropout?ItstartedbeforeIwasborn.Mybiologicalmotherwasayoung,unwedgraduatestudent,andshede

3、cidedtoputmeupforadoption.ShefeltverystronglythatIshouldbeadoptedbycollegegraduates,soeverythingwasallsetformetobeadoptedatbirthbyalawyerandhiswife,exceptthatwhenIpoppedout,theydecidedatthelastminutethattheyreallywantedagirl.Somyparents,whowereonawaitinglist,gotacallinthemiddleofthenightasking,Weveg

4、otanunexpectedbabyboy.Doyouwanthim?Theysaid,Ofcourse.Mybiologicalmotherfoundoutlaterthatmymotherhadnevergraduatedfromcollegeandthatmyfatherhadnevergraduatedfromhighschool.Sherefusedtosignthefinaladoptionpapers.SheonlyrelentedafewmonthslaterwhenmyparentspromisedthatIwouldgotocollege.Thiswasthestartin

5、mylife.Andseventeenyearslater,Ididgotocollege,butInavelychoseacollegethatwasalmostasexpensiveasStanford,andallofmyworking-classparentssavingswerebeingspentonmycollegetuition.Aftersixmonths,Icouldntseethevalueinit.IhadnoideawhatIwantedtodowithmylife,andnoideaofhowcollegewasgoingtohelpmefigureitout,an

6、dhereIwas,spendingallthemoneymyparentshadsavedtheirentirelife.SoIdecidedtodropoutandtrustthatitwouldallworkoutOK.Itwasprettyscaryatthetime,butlookingback,itwasoneofthebestdecisionsIevermade.TheminuteIdroppedout,Icouldstoptakingtherequiredclassesthatdidntinterestmeandbegindroppinginontheonesthatlooke

7、dfarmoreinteresting.Itwasntallromantic.Ididnthaveadormroom,soIsleptonthefloorinfriendsrooms.IreturnedCokebottlesforthefive-centdepositstobuyfoodwith,andIwouldwalkthesevenmilesacrosstowneverySundaynighttogetonegoodmealaweekattheHareKrishnatemple.Ilovedit.AndmuchofwhatIstumbledintobyfollowingmycuriosi

8、tyandintuitionturnedouttobepricelesslateron.Letmegiveyouoneexample.ReedCollegeatthattimeofferedperhapsthebestcalligraphyinstructioninthecountry.Throughoutthecampuseveryposter,everylabeloneverydrawerwasbeautifullyhand-calligraphed.BecauseIhaddroppedoutanddidnthavetotakethenormalclasses,Idecidedtotake

9、acalligraphyclasstolearnhowtodothis.Ilearnedaboutserifandsans-seriftypefaces,aboutvaryingtheamountofspacebetweendifferentlettercombinations,aboutwhatmakesgreattypographygreat.Itwasbeautiful,historical,artisticallysubtleinawaythatsciencecantcapture,andIfounditfascinating.Noneofthishadevenahopeofanypr

10、acticalapplicationinmylife.ButtenyearslaterwhenweweredesigningthefirstMacintoshcomputer,itallcamebacktome,andwedesigneditallintotheMac.Itwasthefirstcomputerwithbeautifultypography.IfIhadneverdroppedinonthatsinglecourseincollege,theMacwouldhaveneverhadmultipletypefacesorproportionallyspacedfonts,ands

11、inceWindowsjustcopiedtheMac,itslikelythatnopersonalcomputerwouldhavethem.IfIhadneverdroppedout,Iwouldhaveneverdroppedinonthatcalligraphyclassandpersonalscomputersmightnothavethewonderfultypographythattheydo.OfcourseitwasimpossibletoconnectthedotslookingforwardwhenIwasincollege,butitwasvery,veryclear

12、lookingbackwards10yearslater.Again,youcantconnectthedotslookingforward.Youcanonlyconnectthemlookingbackwards,soyouhavetotrustthatthedotswillsomehowconnectinyourfuture.Youhavetotrustinsomething-yourgut,destiny,life,karma,whatever-becausebelievingthatthedotswillconnectdowntheroadwillgiveyoutheconfiden

13、cetofollowyourheart,evenwhenitleadsyouoffthewell-wornpath,andthatwillmakeallthedifference.Mysecondstoryisaboutloveandloss.Iwaslucky.IfoundwhatIlovedtodoearlyinlife.WozandIstartedAppleinmyparentsgaragewhenIwastwenty.Weworkedhardandintenyears,Applehadgrownfromjustthetwoofusinagarageintoa$2billioncompa

14、nywithover4,000employees.Wedjustreleasedourfinestcreation,theMacintosh,ayearearlier,andIdjustturnedthirty,andthenIgotfired.Howcanyougetfiredfromacompanyyoustarted?Well,asApplegrew,wehiredsomeonewhoIthoughtwasverytalentedtorunthecompanywithme,andforthefirstyearorso,thingswentwell.Butthenourvisionsoft

15、hefuturebegantodiverge,andeventuallywehadafallingout.Whenwedid,ourboardofdirectorssidedwithhim,andsoatthirty,Iwasout,andverypubliclyout.Whathadbeenthefocusofmyentireadultlifewasgone,anditwasdevastating.Ireallydidntknowwhattodoforafewmonths.IfeltthatIhadletthepreviousgenerationofentrepreneursdown,tha

16、tIhaddroppedthebatonasitwasbeingpassedtome.ImetwithDavidPackardandBobNoyceandtriedtoapologizeforscrewingupsobadly.IwasaverypublicfailureandIeventhoughtaboutrunningawayfromtheValley.Butsomethingslowlybegantodawnonme.IstilllovedwhatIdid.TheturnofeventsatApplehadnotchangedthatonebit.IdbeenrejectedbutIw

17、asstillinlove.AndsoIdecidedtostartover.Ididntseeitthen,butitturnedoutthatgettingfiredfromApplewasthebestthingthatcouldhaveeverhappenedtome.Theheavinessofbeingsuccessfulwasreplacedbythelightnessofbeingabeginneragain,lesssureabouteverything.Itfreedmetoenteroneofthemostcreativeperiodsinmylife.Duringthe

18、nextfiveyearsIstartedacompanynamedNeXT,anothercompanynamedPixarandfellinlovewithanamazingwomanwhowouldbecomemywife.Pixarwentontocreatetheworldsfirstcomputer-animatedfeaturefilm,ToyStory,andisnowthemostsuccessfulanimationstudiointheworld.Inaremarkableturnofevents,AppleboughtNeXTandIreturnedtoAppleand

19、thetechnologywedevelopedatNeXTisattheheartofApplescurrentrenaissance,andLoreneandIhaveawonderfulfamilytogether.ImprettysurenoneofthiswouldhavehappenedifIhadntbeenfiredfromApple.Itwasawful-tastingmedicinebutIguessthepatientneededit.Sometimeslifesgoingtohityouintheheadwithabrick.Dontlosefaith.Imconvin

20、cedthattheonlythingthatkeptmegoingwasthatIlovedwhatIdid.Youvegottofindwhatyoulove,andthatisastrueforworkasitisforyourlovers.Yourworkisgoingtofillalargepartofyourlife,andtheonlywaytobetrulysatisfiedistodowhatyoubelieveisgreatwork,andtheonlywaytodogreatworkistolovewhatyoudo.Ifyouhaventfoundityet,keepl

21、ooking,anddontsettle.Aswithallmattersoftheheart,youllknowwhenyoufindit,andlikeanygreatrelationshipitjustgetsbetterandbetterastheyearsrollon.Sokeeplooking.Dontsettle.Mythirdstoryisaboutdeath.WhenIwas17IreadaquotethatwentsomethinglikeIfyouliveeachdayasifitwasyourlast,somedayyoullmostcertainlyberight.I

22、tmadeanimpressiononme,andsincethen,forthepast33years,Ihavelookedinthemirroreverymorningandaskedmyself,Iftodaywerethelastdayofmylife,wouldIwanttodowhatIamabouttodotoday?Andwhenevertheanswerhasbeennofortoomanydaysinarow,IknowIneedtochangesomething.RememberingthatIllbedeadsoonisthemostimportantthingIve

23、everencounteredtohelpmemakethebigchoicesinlife,becausealmosteverything-allexternalexpectations,allpride,allfearofembarrassmentorfailure-thesethingsjustfallawayinthefaceofdeath,leavingonlywhatistrulyimportant.RememberingthatyouaregoingtodieisthebestwayIknowtoavoidthetrapofthinkingyouhavesomethingtolo

24、se.Youarealreadynaked.Thereisnoreasonnottofollowyourheart.Aboutayearago,Iwasdiagnosedwithcancer.Ihadascanat7:30inthemorninganditclearlyshowedatumoronmypancreas.Ididntevenknowwhatapancreaswas.Thedoctorstoldmethiswasalmostcertainlyatypeofcancerthatisincurable,andthatIshouldexpecttolivenolongerthanthre

25、etosixmonths.Mydoctoradvisedmetogohomeandgetmyaffairsinorder,whichisdoctorscodeforpreparetodie.Itmeanstotryandtellyourkidseverythingyouthoughtyoudhavethenexttenyearstotellthem,injustafewmonths.Itmeanstomakesurethateverythingisbuttonedupsothatitwillbeaseasyaspossibleforyourfamily.Itmeanstosayyourgood

26、byes.Ilivedwiththatdiagnosisallday.LaterthateveningIhadabiopsywheretheystuckanendoscopedownmythroat,throughmystomachintomyintestines,putaneedleintomypancreasandgotafewcellsfromthetumor.Iwassedatedbutmywife,whowasthere,toldmethatwhentheyviewedthecellsunderamicroscope,thedoctorstartedcrying,becauseitt

27、urnedouttobeaveryrareformofpancreaticcancerthatiscurablewithsurgery.Ihadthesurgeryand,thankfully,Iamfinenow.ThiswastheclosestIvebeentofacingdeath,andIhopeitstheclosestIgetforafewmoredecades.Havinglivedthroughit,Icannowsaythistoyouwithabitmorecertaintythanwhendeathwasausefulbutpurelyintellectualconce

28、pt.Noonewantstodie,evenpeoplewhowanttogotoHeavendontwanttodietogetthere,andyet,deathisthedestinationweallshare.Noonehaseverescapedit.Andthatisasitshouldbe,becausedeathisverylikelythesinglebestinventionoflife.Itslifeschangeagent;itclearsouttheoldtomakewayforthenew.rightnow,thenewisyou.Butsomeday,nott

29、oolongfromnow,youwillgraduallybecometheoldandbeclearedaway.Sorrytobesodramatic,butitsquitetrue.Yourtimeislimited,sodontwasteitlivingsomeoneelseslife.Dontbetrappedbydogma,whichislivingwiththeresultsofotherpeoplesthinking.Dontletthenoiseofothersopinionsdrownoutyourowninnervoice,heartandintuition.Theys

30、omehowalreadyknowwhatyoutrulywanttobecome.Everythingelseissecondary.WhenIwasyoung,therewasanamazingpublicationcalledTheWholeEarthCatalogue,whichwasoneofthebiblesofmygeneration.ItwascreatedbyafellownamedStuartBrandnotfarfromhereinMenloPark,andhebroughtittolifewithhispoetictouch.ThiswasinthelateSixtie

31、s,beforepersonalcomputersanddesktoppublishing,soitwasallmadewithtypewriters,scissors,andPolaroidcameras.itwassortoflikeGoogleinpaperbackformthirty-fiveyearsbeforeGooglecamealong.Iwasidealistic,overflowingwithneattoolsandgreatnotions.StuartandhisteamputoutseveralissuesoftheTheWholeEarthCatalogue,andt

32、henwhenithadrunitscourse,theyputoutafinalissue.Itwasthemid-SeventiesandIwasyourage.Onthebackcoveroftheirfinalissuewasaphotographofanearlymorningcountryroad,thekindyoumightfindyourselfhitchhikingonifyouweresoadventurous.Beneathwerethewords,Stayhungry,stayfoolish.Itwastheirfarewellmessageastheysignedoff.Stayhungry,stayfoolish.AndIhavealwayswishedthatformyself,andnow,asyougraduatetobeginanew,Iwishthatforyou.Stayhungry,stayfoolish.Thankyouall,verymuch.-
