It came into being (形成) after 1790 and has a history of over 200 years. Its music and singing came from Xipi and

15、 Erhuang in Anhui and Hubei. The Guangxu Emperor (帝王) and Empress Dowager Cixi were also crazy about Beijing Opera and helped develop the art form.There are four main roles in Beijing Opera: Sheng, Dan, Jing, Chou. Sheng is the leading male (男性) actor. For example, a Wusheng is a soldier or fighter.
