3、al master Prof.HE Pu-ren in his clinical prac?ces for almost 70 years,and it is highly favored as“fl ying needle manipula?on”.This manipula?on has high requirements on fi nger strength;it is characterized from techniques for holding needles to needling inser?on,and it is painless during needle inser

4、tion and the needling responses are rapid;the operations are simple,with high prac?cability in clinic,and it can improve working effi ciency and clinical effi cacy.KEY WORDS:Hes needling manipulation;flying needle method;painless needle inser?ng methodProf.HE Pu-ren,also named as Shiniu or Kongshui,

5、is one of the first generation of famous traditional Chinese medical master,a famous leading person in acupuncture all over the world,and he is the founder of“three promotions for acupuncture”.Prof.He has been engaged into clinical practices on acupuncture for almost 70 years and devoted all his lif

6、e in inheritance,exploration and development of traditional acupuncture therapy,integrating medical ethics,medical principles,medical achievements and medical skills.Prof.He combined the needling methods of famous acupuncture physicians in successive dynasties according to traditional theories of ac

7、upuncture medical science,integrated with martial arts and chigong,and established a set of intact clinical theories and methods for acupuncture therapy.In terms of the micropromotion method in the Hes three promotions,it has unique characteristics in practices in fi nger strength,techniques for hol

8、ding needles and needling insertion by flying needle method.Prof.LI Yan,is the apprentice of Prof.HE Pu-ren,and he began to follow and study from Prof.He since 2000 and got a lot from the acupuncture manipulation of Prof.He.Prof.Li was not stint for teaching the author about the essence of Hes acupu

9、ncture manipulation during clinical practices,he gave earnest exhortations from practices by himself in finger strength,techniques for holding needles to techniques for needle insertion.Though the supervisor taught by personal example as well as verbal instruction,the techniques of needling could no

10、t be achieved in a day,the author was fatheaded and only got 1020%.Hereby,the author summarized the Hes acupuncture manipulation by using acupuncture needles as follows.FINGER STRENGTH IS ABOVE ALL THE KEY POINTS FOR ACUPUNCTUREAcupuncture needles are thin and soft,it is very difficult to insert the

12、qi and maintaining needling sensation can be easily achieved.It is recorded in Yizong Jinjian:Cijiu Xinfa Yaojue(医宗金鉴 刺灸心法要诀Golden Mirror of the Medical Tradition:Key Points for Mental Cultivation Methods of Needling and Moxibustion)that“the ingenious essence lies in fi nger toes”;it is required in

13、Suwen:Baoming Quanxing Lun(素问 宝命全形论Plain Question:Protecting Your Body and Treasuring Your Life)for operators of acupuncture that the needles should be held just like holding a tiger,and thus it can be found that the requirements on fi nger strength in acupuncture therapy by using acupuncture needle

14、s are very high.Therefore,“practices in finger strength should be precede over practices in needling”,and practices in fi nger strength are premises for practicing needling techniques.Prof.He supposed that the three fi ngers,namely thumb,index finger and middle finger,are the fi ngers in which the s

15、trength should be placed during needling,thumb and index finger should be placed with the major strength,while middle fi nger should be placed with less strength.Finger tips are the smallest parts of human body,the exertion of strength should be attributed to the knuckle by drawing assistance from t

16、he strength of wrist and arm or even the entire body,and thus needles can be swiftly and painlessly inserted into acupoints.Prof.He used to practice needling on each other with his senior fellow apprentice when he was still an apprentice in order to experience needling feelings.He found people pract

17、icing martial arts had powerful fi nger strength,and it was painless during needle insertion and the needling feeling was signifi cant,and thus he visited the third generation of famous master of Yins Eight Diagrams Palm Prof.CAO Zhong-sheng and worked as his student.He practiced Eight Diagrams Palm

18、 every morning for two hours and then came back waiting for patients and going on house calls,and he went ahead regardless of weather.Eight Diagrams Palm belongs to the system combining meditation and internal work,and practices in Eight Diagrams Palm focus on“transmutation of energy into qi,transmu

19、tation of qi into mind”.Hard work for many years has benefited Prof.He a lot,and his finger strength and wrist strength were very powerful.Moreover,practices in Eight Diagrams Palm can achieve the effi cacy of“by means of gas,the gas to lead all the mind,heart drives mind,by means of gas,the gas to

20、lead all the mind,heart drives qi and qi drives the body”in acupuncture therapy,which can establish basis for painless needle inserting method in the future.Besides practicing martial arts,Prof.He also summarized handstand,heading finger method,clipping woody cone,twisting method and other methods f

21、or practicing finger strength 1,and these methods were inherited successively in descendants as the methods for practicing Hes fi nger strength.THE PRINCIPLE FOR HOLDING NEEDLES IS SOLID FINGERS AND WEAK PALM Different famous acupuncture physicians have their own techniques for holding needles,and d

22、ifferent gestures for holding needles are the reflections for ideas in acupuncture by different acupuncture physicians,just like different sections have their own characteristics though they all belong to the Eight Diagrams Palm.In terms of the palm configuration at the starting,Yins Eight Diagrams

23、Palm utilizes“ox-tongue palm”as the basic palm configuration,the movements are firm and fierce,the actions are cold,short,rapid and full of rebounding and shaking forces;Chengs is characterized by“dragon-shaped palm”,the motion curve of palm gesture is circular and flexible,the radian measure is sig

24、nificant,it is winding and coils,the operators bend their legs at walking just like mud-wading step and utilize Baikou step for configuration transformation,and the proper positioning is dominated by waist;Fans is characterized by“Walong palm”,the fist mode is compact,light and nimble,“triangle pace

25、”is used to fight four dimensions and step on all directions,walking in Jiugong mainly and circling in adjunction,and it has its unique style.Moreover,in terms of the calligraphic schools,the gestures for holding pens and starting writing determine different calligraphic styles when the strokes of t

26、he Chinese character are the same,for example,HE Shao-ji and QIAN Nan-yuan in the same era had their unique characteristics though they both studied Yan style(YAN Zhen-qing in Tang dynasty).QIAN Nan-yuan developed a new style for himself,did not follow the style at that time,started from YAN Zhen-qi

27、ng in the just,upright and outspoken manner,solely practiced the Yan style and skillfully mastered the essence of Yan style.In contrast,HE Shao-ji kept his hukou(part of the hand between the thumb and the index fi nger)upwards when he held a pen,the centre of the palm was kept towards his chest,the

28、fi ve fi ngers pointed to his chest,the fi nger tips held the pen,both his wrist and elbow were suspended just like drawing bow and pulling bowstring,as pointed out by himself“the wrist should be highly suspended during writing,and the characters can be written by mobilizing World Journal of Acupunc

30、tyle 2.Therefore,it can be found that acupuncture therapy just like practicing martial arts and writing,and the gestures for holding needles can also determine the power of acupuncture.The techniques for holding needles can refl ect the fi nger strength of the physician and whether the needle insert

31、ion may be painful or not,affecting the intensity of needling feeling and thus determining the therapeutic efficacy.In terms of Hes acupuncture therapy by using acupuncture needles,the thumb is kept inwards,while the index finger and the middle finger are kept outwards,the thumb and the index finger

32、 clench the needle handle or the needle body by the finger pulp,the middle fi nger gently supports the needle body without provide forces,only functionings as assistance,and the needle tips are exposed by 20%30%3.The hand figure should be kept as follows:solid fingers,weak palm and round hand back.T

33、he so-called solid fi ngers refer to the strength for clenching the needles by the thumb and the index fi nger.In terms of the fi nger strength of Prof.He,my supervisor had ever told me a story.At the beginning when the country was built up,Prof.He took the responsibilities as the director of depart

34、ment of acupuncture in Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine,when he carried out acupuncture therapy,a colleague in the same department suddenly grasped the needle handle from behind and attempted to take the needle,but he failed and his colleagues all highly commented on the fi nger stre

35、ngth and the tight power for holding needles of Prof.He.Solid fingers can fix the needle body and facilitate the flexible acupuncture therapy;weak palm refers to clenching of the needle handle by only strength from fingers and the palm is kept relaxed,the hand back bowed naturally and kept in round-

36、shape,an egg can be placed in the center of the palm,the center of the palm was kept downwards,the wrist is suspended,the entire configuration is just like the head of a phoenix and thus establishes the basis for needle insertion.PAINLESS NEELDE INSERTION AND SIMPLIFICATIONThe clinic service for Pro

37、f.He was always busy,almost one hundred patients waited for treatments in half a day,and thus Prof.He always held a box of well-arranged silver needles in his left hand during acupuncture therapy from short needles of one inch to elongated needles of seven inches,the needling therapies were almost a

38、ll carried out by a single right hand,and the needle insertion was specifi ed.Gentle touch by the middle finger has its secretProf.He naturally kept his right hands in a phoenix head shape after taking the needles from the box in his left hand,the palm center was kept downwards and his wrist was sus

39、pended,the thumb and the index finger tightly clenched the needle handle,the middle fi nger gently supported the needle body,the needle tip was slightly exposed,and the needle body was kept straight upwards,as required in Neijing(内经The Yellow Emperors Inner Classic)for“perpendicular needling by upri

40、ght fi ngers”.After the needles were taken out and held in hand,the right hand was kept above the acupoint for acupuncture in a certain distance,the wrist was gently swing downwards,the tip of the middle fi nger gently touched the acupoint for acupuncture just like nutation of the phoenix,afterwards

41、 it was lift up immediately,it was rapid just like putting hands in boiling water or touching water surface by flying dragon,the needles were not retained or punctured into the acupoint,and the patients had not painful feeling.Prof.He had ever said that the gentle touching had its secret indeed.(1)A

42、cupoint fathomingMost of the acupoints of yang meridians are located at the yang side of bones and muscles at sags of muscles;while most of acupoints of yin meridians are located at the yin side at the beating positions of arteries.The positions where acupoints locate are distributed with hair folli

43、cles,blood vessels,muscles,tendons and bone,the acupoints should be measured for needling on acupoints avoiding of hair follicles and blood vessels,and it can be painless by accurate needling on acupoints.Clinically,the needles should be held in the right hand,the left hand is used as the fi ngertip

44、 pressing technique,in other words,the hand for measuring acupoint.When the clinical service is busy,the physicians can not measure each acupoint by laying hands,cutting,pressing and measuring acupoints,the gentle touching of middle finger by Prof.He before needle insertion can function as fi ngerti

45、p pressing technique for measuring acupoints.The middle finger gently touches the area where the eyes focus,the positions can be accurately located,the needling can be carried out on“qi-acupoint”rather than pores or blood vessels,which may not lead to pains or hemorrhage,or affect therapeutic effi c

47、ecorded in Suwen Lihe Zhenxie Lun(素问 离合真邪论Plain Questions:Treatise on the Departure and Union of True and Evil)that“the operator should firstly lay hands on and follow them,cut and disperse them,rebound to make them angry,grasping and releasing them.”WANG Bing noted that:“Laying hands and following

48、are termed as hand touching.Cutting refers to pressing with fingers.Laying hands on and following them,thus qi is relaxed.Cutting and dispersing can promote meridians.Pulling and pressing to disperse muscular contracture.Rebounding to make them angry can make meridian qi well stacked.Grasping and re

49、leasing them can insert the needles accurately.”When the clinical services are overburden,physicians can not lay their hands on,follow,cut,disperse,pull,press,fl ip and grasp each acupoint.Finger tips are the most sensitive positions of human body,gentle touching on acupoints can experience statuses

50、 such as knots,arresting or relaxation of muscles in local areas,search for positive reactive site for diseases and fully prepare for needling on acupoints.The gentle touching with middle fi nger before needle insertion by Prof.He can improve the sensitivity and perception degree of fi nger tips aft
