4、Shaolin Plain,there are two ancient towers standing side byside.When the afterglow of the sunset spreads on the two pagodas,the solemn pagodasglow with layers of golden light.The temple by the pagodas,the mountain behind it,and thehouses at the foot of the mountain are all immersed in the light of t

5、he pagodas.These two pagodas are the Columbaria of Master Dushun,the first ancestor of HuayanSchool,and the fourth Master Chengguan.TheThe OneOne WhoWho UnderstandsUnderstands thethe HeartHeart ofof thethe EmperorEmperorThe first ancestor Dushun of Yanhua School has already showed differencefrom his

6、peers when he was young.He liked to tell his friends stories about life and death andreincarnation.His friends were curious about them,and were happy and fascinated aboutwhat they heard.TheactivitiesofDushunstransmittingBuddhismweremainlyheldinthecountryside,specially to solve the practical life dif

9、ncerely invited Master Dushun to the palace out of his admiration to theMaster.He told the Master that he has been suffering from malaria for long time as soon ashe saw Dushun.He also asked the Master to cure him with his special power,and Dushunsaid,Y Yo ou ur r MMa aj je es st ty y i is s s su up

12、ng Taizong accepted Dushuns advice,and granted the amnesty.Soon enough,thelong-term sickness was gone forever.Taizong was very happy,and released a document to grant Dushun the name ofEmperors Heart.So,Master Dushun,who understood the heart of the emperor,rose tofame and helped countless people.Pago

13、daPagoda ofof MasterMaster DushunDushunOne day in the 14th year of Zhenguan(640 AD)the 84-year-old Master Dushun gatheredall his disciples without any signs.He sat cross-legged on the throne and told thempeacefully,My time living in the world is over,and I will die soon.You need to work hard onBuddh

14、ism and help more people.In this way you can benefit from it forever.Then,hesincerely said goodbye to everyone,and slowly closed his eyes.He passed away in peace.The disciples were in great sorrow,and it hurt to the bone.They joined their palms andmourned for their master.Three days later,the discip

15、les delivered Master Dushuns body to a cave in the northface of Fanchuan.Every day they came to mourn and worship.It was mysterious that the color ofmasters body didnt change a bit after a whole month.He sat there still,and a fragrancecame out from his body constantly.Everyone admired the high achie

16、vements in Buddhism ofMaster Dushun.The disciples settled the Masters body in the Columbarium after it wasbuilt.Now,the east pagoda of Huayan is the Pagoda of Master Dushun.The Pagoda is cubicwith 6 levels built upon the bottom.It has 7 levels in total,and it is of 21 meters high.It is abrick pagoda

17、 of wood-like style.There is a plaque on the pagoda written two characters“Yan Zhu”,which means the ancestor of Huayan School.On the third level,it is inlaid withthe carved stone of the clean Jingguang Pagoda.TheThe StateState Teacher,Teacher,Ching-liangChing-liangThe pagoda to the west of Pagoda Du

18、shun is the Columbarium of Chengguan,the stateteacher as well as the 4rd Yanhua ancestor.When the 4rd Yanhua ancestor Chengguan(738-839 AD)was born,the brightness in theyard shone on their neighbors.When Chengguan was young,he already showed hisextraordinary talent and gift.He could remember thousan

19、ds of words and his memoryretained everything.While he played with his mates,they always got together to play withsand and shaped the sand into pagodas.Chengguan was tall with two hands passed hisknees as he grew older.He became a monk at the age of 11,and received Upasampad when he was 20.In the3rd

20、 year of Tang Daizong(769 AD),Chengguan was invited to the palace to help MasterAmoghavajra of the Esoteric Buddhism to translate scriptures in Daxingshan Temple.One day,the Emperor came to the translating forum by himself,and asked ChengguanabouttheessenceofmanyBuddhistclassics.Chengguanansweredind

21、etailandfluency,which turned out to be very useful and pleasing to Daizong.He immediately honoredChengguan as the teacher of emperor,and respected him more.Since then,Chengguanrose in fame.The recognition and respect of Tang Daizong became the turning point ofChengguans life.In the 11th year of Zhen

25、isters around that Chengguan explicated the meaning of Huayan clearly andunderstandably,and that his word awakened the dreamer.The masters words made myworries and anxieties go away,and my heart was peaceful and cooled down,he said.So,Chengguan was given the name State Teacher of Ching-liang.Since t

26、hen,everyoneshowed their high respect to Master Chengguan inside and outside the palace.Chengguan lectured Avatamsaka Sutra for over 50 times in his life.He wrote over 400volumes of masterpieces.He experienced 9 Dynasties in his life,and became the teacher of 7emperors.PagodaPagoda ofof MasterMaster

27、 ChengguanChengguanIn the 4th year of Wenzong Kaicheng(839 AD),Chengguan has foreseen his death,sohe gathered his disciples,and passed away cross-legged as peaceful as the first ancestorDushun after completed his orders to the disciples.He was 102 years old.Because he was the teacher of the emperor,

28、andwas respected by each emperor indifferent dynasty,Tang Wenzong made a special strike for 3 days to mourn with the wholecountry.While Master Chengguan was cremated,his relic was round,bright and clear.Histongue was as bright as the color of the red lotus.Later,the relic of Master Chengguan was pla

29、ced in the pagoda of Huayan Temple.Thepagoda of Master Ching-liang was in shape of hexagon.It is a brick pagoda with 7 levels and6 faces,and 17 meters high.The pagoda is inlaid with carved stone inscribed Datang StateTeacher of Ching-liang Miaojues Pagoda.The west of the pagoda faces the plain,and t

30、here might be danger of overturning by therain.So the government of Changan district deconstructed it in 1986,and relocated it 10meters to the southeast.Huayan Temple was a major Buddhist location in the southern suburbs of Changan inthe Tang Dynastry.The famous monk ubhakarasiha of Vajrayana with M

31、aster Thich NhatHanh both had close relationship with Yanhua Temple.Master Thich Nhat Hanh has beenstayed in Huayan Temple for many times.The Sanskrit in Mahavairocana Tantra,thefundamentalScriptureofVajrayana,translatedbyubhakarasiha,wasfromYanhuaTemple.So you can see the important role Yanhua Temp

32、le plays in Buddhis.TheThe FlourishingFlourishing SceneryScenery ofof HuyanHuyan TempleTempleThe exact time of the construction of Huayan Temple has been mentioned in the worksof two literati from Song Dynasty.One is Records of Changan from Song Minqiu,and theother one is Visiting Chengnan from Zhan

33、g Li.Both of them believed that Huayan Temple wasbuilt during the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty.Some scholars believe that the year of construction of Huayan Temple can be greatlyadvanced.It can be pushed back to earlier in Han Dynasty.In Tang Dynasty,Huayan Temple was one of the 8 great templ

34、es of Fanchuan.You can seethe complete beautiful scene of the north side of Qinling from Huayan Temple.It is a greatlocation for sightseeing.Therefore,Huayan Temple has always been a treasured place forscholars and poets.In Visiting Chengnan from Zhang Li in Song Dynasty,it mentions that there was a

35、 monkcall Ziqi in Huayan Temple,who showed him hundreds of poems from scholars and poetsfrom different dynasties.Some of them were famous authors,some were common monks,and some were officials and nobles.The Honored to Visit Huayan Temple written by Tang Xuanzong has it that,T Th he e c cl lo ou ud

38、t Zhongnan Mountain from distance.Themountains have more than several thousand layers.The thin fog nearby lingered in the spring.The scene was vague.In this highland like Huayan Temple,it seems that you can walk into thespring over your head.Looking down at Fanchuan,the earth is covered in the green

39、.Since ancient times,it makes you feel poetic and artistic while standing in HuayanTemple and overlooking the Nan Mountain.Huayan Templehasanimportant positionandrolein thehistoryofChineseBuddism.The Eminent monks gathered at the solemn Huayan Temple in Tang Dynasty.Theenvironment here is beautiful,

40、and it is the center of Buddhism in the world.Huayan Temple is the cradle of Huayan ideology.It is in this place that the 5thancestorofHuayanformedthemostharmonioustheoreticalsystemofChineseBuddhism,which promoted the process of Buddhism in China.Huayan Temple is the center of transmitting Huayan id

41、eology to the world.Huayanideology is transmitted to Japan and Korea from Huayan Temple.Huayan Temple is a holy place for Buddhist all over the world to worship.It has far-reachinghistoricalcontributionsandpracticalsignificanceinpromotinginternationalfriendship.It still stands on the Shaoling Plain after experiencing difficulties in time.The two Huayantwin pagodas are still the Trinity spiritual landmark of Avatamsaka Sutra,Huayan School andHuayan Temple,which demonstrate the great cultural value,and witness the new atmosphereof the new era as always.
