1、一I live in the keepers lodge (屋舍) in London Zoo. Its a big shared house on site where eight zookeepers can care for the animals overnight. Its an experience like no other, and one every zookeeper wants. Every morning I wake up at 7 when our gibbon (长臂猿), Jimmy, starts singing loudly. I take a coffee
2、 into the garden and chat to the hawks (老鹰) and the ibis (鹮) in the aviary (鸟舍) behind the house. We fed our sloth (树懒), Edward, when his mother couldnt, and built him a jungle gym (攀爬架) from broom handles. Beanie, a newborn giant anteater (食蚁兽), lived with us, too. The best time is sunset, when the
3、 gates have closed. Ill take a walk around and hear Bhanu, our male lion, roar and watch the ringtail lemurs (环尾狐猴) play with each other; it seems theyre enjoying themselves. A keeper will say they dont have favorite animals, but its a lie. Mine are small monkeys called emperor tamarins (皇绒猴). I hel
4、ped a pair breed (孕育) a family of 10 when I worked in the rainforest house. Coronavirus has changed everything. On March 21, the zoo closed to the public for the first time since World War II, so its always quiet now. I miss answering visitors questions and showing off our animals. Weve hidden food
5、for the meerkats (狐蒙) to find and puzzles for the squirrel monkeys (松鼠猴). We wear personal protective equipment to prepare food and activities. Colds have passed between humans and primates (灵长类); were unsure if coronavirus can, but its important to be safe. Living and working here is an unusual exi
6、stence but, at 42, it cant get any better. I have animals in my back garden that are threatened or extinct in the wild. 10、na who demonstrated (展示) bravery. Serena was our plays narrator (旁白). She was scared she would forget her lines. “If you do,” I advised, “pause, stare at the audience and take time to remember. The audience will think its part of the play.” Halfway through the opening night, Serena forgot her lines.
11、 She stared out at the 300 people gathered in the gym. After what seemed like forever, Serena remembered. After the performance, she burst into tears backstage (在后台), thinking she had let everybody down. When our principal came back to congratulate our cast (全体演员), she turned to Serena and said her
12、pause worked so well. Little did she know about Serenas little act of bravery. Teachers spend hours making lessons to teach skills and knowledge.
